Dockery, who is a senior studying marketing, says her favorite topic to discuss with prospective students is study abroad opportunities.

“I went to Mason Korea fall of 2021 to study my business core classes and loved it, so if I can share my experience and convince others that studying abroad at Mason is workable with business classes, I do,” says Dockery.

While in Korea she especially appreciated immersing herself in the culture. “I loved living in the city and experiencing life from a unique perspective. We were walking distance from a subway station so I could just get on it with friends and go explore Seoul, which wasn’t too far away from campus.” Dockery says that studying in Korea is “an experience like no other, and it will allow you to grow as an individual and gain a global understanding of another country.”

The Student Ambassador program, established in 2016, hires current students to help foster a connection with, and provide firsthand testimonials to those considering attending Mason. Student Ambassadors provide campus tours, lead panels at special events, and most importantly answer questions from prospective students.

Dockery advises perspective students to attend the Get Connected Fair. “This will allow them to see all the clubs Mason has and see what stands out to them. Do not be scared to be involved. Find people and make friends—make a community to call your own. I would also suggest reaching out for help—self-advocacy is important whether you are struggling in a class or need other kinds of help. There are resources on campus that can help you—going to college is a new chapter of your life, so enjoy it and get help if you need it!”

Speaking with prospective students during the Spring Preview 2022 is what Dockery enjoyed the most. “This stood out to me, because as a marketing major, I could share my experience in marketing classes, and having finished all of my business core classes. I could also tell them it's okay not to know what to do right away. Business undecided is still a good choice because business core can help you find what you like. Prospective students would also ask about internships and research work. And this past spring, I had a research assistant position so I could assure prospective students that it is possible to get one during your time at Mason.”

Asked what the most rewarding aspect has been being a Student Ambassador, Dockery says “Being a part of the decision-making process for prospective students and the amount of self-growth I have experienced, due to gaining new public speaking skills.”

Topics

Topics

Costello College of Business News

Costello College of Business Students

Tue, 26 Jul 2022 10:57:54 +0000 Jennifer Anzaldi 73316 at Transfer Student Finds Rewarding Experience in Student Ambassador Program /news/2022-06/transfer-student-finds-rewarding-experience-student-ambassador-program Transfer Student Finds Rewarding Experience in Student Ambassador Program Jennifer Anzaldi Thu, 06/30/2022 - 10:36

Body

Neil VanHaaften

As a transfer accounting student, Neil VanHaaften, joined the Student Ambassador program at ŃÇÖȚAV School of Business to get know his peers and professors, especially because he was attending virtually for his first semester.

VanHaaften, who is a rising junior, enjoyed speaking with prospective students at the fall and spring premieres the most. “I loved attending these, as I truly think that Mason has a phenomenal framework in place and loved getting to speak about it and how I have used the various services offered to students. I think that it is different hearing about these services from a current student vs reading about them on a webpage, as it makes the benefits gained much more real and believable when it comes from a person/student rather than coming from a website,” says VanHaaften.

The Student Ambassador program, established in 2016, hires current students to help foster a connection with, and provide firsthand testimonials to those considering attending Mason. Student Ambassadors provide campus tours, lead panels at special events, and most importantly answer questions from prospective students.

Hearing a current student’s perspective can be more meaningful and often helpful when deciding where to go to college. “The most rewarding aspect is being in a position to help potential students get a head start on their career and education. I am in a position to make the transition process much easier and can help limit the stress of college that many first-year students feel by simply giving advice about good habits that they should start at the very beginning of their first semester. Ultimately, the most rewarding aspect is being in a position to help ease the transition and uncertainty that many students face,” says VanHaaften.

Asked what advise he has for freshmen and transfer students VanHaaften says “to ultimately find an organization system that helps manage the work of all your classes. Whether that be an online calendar, or a physical planner, write down everything that is due on any given week ahead of time, so you know how to manage your time heading into the week. Having an organizational system will save you time and help limit your anxiety. It will help keep you on track, and it will make your day-to-day life easier.”

“As a transfer student myself, I would also recommend transfer students should familiarize themselves with the numerous services offered by the school. You never know how they can help you and what you can gain from them. I was able to gain an internship for this summer at an accounting firm, solely due to all the help the School of Business Office of Career Service offered to me.”

Topics

Topics

Costello College of Business News

Costello College of Business Students

Thu, 30 Jun 2022 14:36:31 +0000 Jennifer Anzaldi 71891 at Mason Hillel President Lands Dream Job at Hillel International /news/2022-04/mason-hillel-president-lands-dream-job-hillel-international Mason Hillel President Lands Dream Job at Hillel International Jennifer Anzaldi Wed, 04/27/2022 - 09:51

Body

Hailey Behrman

Hailey Behrman, a senior marketing student graduating this May, always wanted to explore her Jewish identity, but didn’t know where to start. Behrman sought out Mason Hillel, a nonprofit organization affiliated with ŃÇÖȚAV where students can discover their relationship with Judaism through educational and social programming, including trips to Israel.

“I reached out to our previous executive director and expected myself to be a ‘fly on the wall’ and to learn from the outside looking in. What I ended up finding is that this whole experience has been immersive, I was encouraged to take ownership of my identity and found that many students had very similar experiences to me,” says Behrman.

Joining Mason Hillel’s Executive Board was the next step for Behrman. She began as a general board member, was elected social media chair her junior year, and has held the position of president since January 2021. That following summer Behrman began an internship with Hillel International as their marketing strategy and analytics intern—an internship she still holds today.

Behrman found that her School of Business classes with Associate Professor Gautham Vadakkepatt impacted her education the most. Taking both Emerging Technologies and Marketing Strategy and Retailing and e-Commerce Management over the last year, Behrman was concerned about understanding the material. “I had very little experience in these topics, but Professor Vadakkepatt’s passion for teaching and helping his students is what made these classes so amazing,” says Behrman. “He makes a point for students to know that he is here for our professional development too—he wants to see us succeed,” says Behrman.

“Hailey is an exemplary Mason student—smart, dedicated, driven, creative, and professional. She comes to class well prepared and ready to discuss [marketing concepts], and her client company project was very well received by the company. Hailey has exhibited leadership and initiative both inside and outside of class. Her future is bright,” says Vadakkepatt.

The School of Business encourages all its students to intern at least once during their undergraduate career. Behrman already completed five internships by the time she began working for Hillel International. Her favorite project being a marketing campaign that increased brand awareness of what Hillel is and what it offers to students before they ever step foot on a college campus. “We want students to know that we are here for them, wherever they may be in their journey,” says Behrman.

“Hailey has an incredible skill at understanding how to market to her peers in relevant and modern ways. She takes what we do at Mason Hillel and markets it in a way that speaks to our students' needs and desires. She has really enhanced all that we do here and helped us achieve over 70 percent growth this year in our engagement numbers. We are so thrilled that she is continuing her work with Hillel International,” says Rabbi Daniel Novick, executive director of Mason Hillel.

Executive Director of Mason Hillel Rabbi Daniel Novick (left), with Hailey Behrman (center), and former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam at the governor and first lady's Hanukkah party in December 2021.

As a first-generation student it was important to Behrman to find a sense of belonging at Mason. “Because I was the first in my family to enroll at a university, I was obsessed with making sure I wasn’t missing anything as a freshman. After meeting with my advisors, I felt secure in being able to successfully be a student at Mason without a family roadmap. Mason was accepting, inviting, and encouraging to me as a first-gen student because everyone here already has such a diverse background. I never felt looked down upon,” says Behrman.

Through her Hillel International internship, Behrman gained new programming, field, and networking skills, and learned what it was like to collaborate with a team. “I learned that it is important to work for an organization that cares about you as a person, and where you feel connected to the company’s mission. Now that I have had the opportunity to combine both of my interests and passions—marketing and Judaism—I can’t ever see myself working where I don’t feel connected to a company’s mission,” says Behrman.

Behrman will begin her new role as the digital marketing associate of student experiences at Hillel International later this May.

Topics

Topics

Costello College of Business Students

Costello College of Business News

Graduation

Wed, 27 Apr 2022 13:51:17 +0000 Jennifer Anzaldi 69146 at To Sum it Up: Digital Tools are a Must in this Accounting Classroom /news/2022-01/sum-it-digital-tools-are-must-accounting-classroom To Sum it Up: Digital Tools are a Must in this Accounting Classroom Marianne Klinker Fri, 01/21/2022 - 15:38

In This Story

People Mentioned in This Story

Peggy Tsirigotis

Body

Engaging students in the classroom is something that professors always work towards. Her inspiration? Her students playing games on their phone before class began. “Digital tools are making learning more interactive and I believe more immediate. Today’s students are accustomed to discovering information quickly. Interactive digital games offer a learning experience with much needed repetition to strengthen the long-term memory of a student’s learning,” Tsirigotis said.

The game consists of five levels and asks students to answer 20 questions per level. If students answer 10 questions correctly they receive one star, if they answer 15 correctly they get two stars, three stars, which is a perfect score, can be achieved by answering all of the questions correctly. Every question is multiple choice, each level lasts two minutes, and bonus points can be obtained if answers are received within five seconds. Questions cover foundational accounting concepts such as the accounting equation, identify debits and credits using T-accounts, journal entries, accounting vocabulary, and accounting theory.

When creating the game, Tsirigotis, who began at the school as an adjunct in fall 2016, found evaluating the game to be the most challenging part of its creation. “Assessing how to program the timer...meaning how many minutes to give a student to get through a level. If I had an opportunity to recreate the game, I might have thought out the timer for each level more thoroughly,” Tsirigotis said.

Overall the students really enjoyed playing the game, particularly the asynchronous sections who liked the interactive SCORM (leader board) package, as it provided an opportunity for students to engage with each other through a friendly competition. “I received significant feedback from students that the game provides an opportunity to easily get in much needed repetition of the learning outcomes to be successful in this course and to help the students prepare for the next course in sequence,” Tsirigotis said.

Tsirigotis believes that more professors should integrate digital tools into their lesson plans. “Digital tools allow students to learn the course objectives in a quick and fun modality. Students are more engaged and interested in returning to a fun learning environment that will help them be successful, rather than feeling overwhelmed by hours of studying that may not provide the much-needed repetition that is required in foundational courses,” Tsirigotis said.

Topics

Topics

Costello College of Business News

Fri, 21 Jan 2022 20:38:14 +0000 Marianne Klinker 63746 at Assistant Professor Leila Austin Named 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellow /news/2021-12/assistant-professor-leila-austin-named-2021-deans-teaching-faculty-fellow Assistant Professor Leila Austin Named 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellow Marianne Klinker Wed, 12/15/2021 - 14:33

In This Story

People Mentioned in This Story

Leila Austin

Body

Leila Austin, assistant professor of Business Foundations, was named one of the 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellows. I feel privileged to be a teacher because I know I play a key role in helping to nurture the future leaders of our community. I teach students to challenge their own thinking, to question the events happening around them, and to contemplate solutions to problems that they face,” said Austin.

“Leila’s strongest contribution to our area is her teaching. She is dedicated to enhancing our students’ critical thinking and to providing a structured opportunity for them to question and explore intercultural competencies. In fact, she recently developed a special topics course on business, government, and public policy that considers how businesses and entrepreneurs have shaped political and economic outcomes in both the United States and globally,” said Jackie Brown, area chair of Business Foundations.

Additionally, Austin has served on the school’s Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Taskforce, where she strove to create a space where people can bring ideas to the table, feel valued and reassured that their voice and lived experiences matter. “If some of our community members don’t feel included, we haven’t leveraged the power of diversity. I feel privileged to have participated in a taskforce that aims to bring the kind of psychological safety that we need in our educational institutions and society at large,” said Austin.

In her Business and Society course, issues surrounding diversity in the workplace often occur during class discussions. In one particular class, Austin remembers a student struggling with this topic and left the classroom when a female student challenged his thoughts on the issue of gender inequities. “After class, I found this student waiting for me and wanting to further discuss and understand his own reaction. I invited him and the female student to my office for a private meeting and during that meeting, both students found that they had more in common than they had imagined. We had an honest and at times difficult discussion about a variety of issues that transcended the class itself,” said Austin.

Through this discourse with her students, Austin learned how important it is for professors to provide a safe space for students to have these type of conversations. “It isn’t always as smooth as I’d like it to be, but it’s an ongoing process that I believe is very worthwhile. As an immigrant myself, I feel right at home and very privileged to be guiding the multiple perspectives that my students bring to class,” said Austin.

Topics

Topics

Costello College of Business News

Costello College of Business Dean's Teaching and Faculty Awards

Wed, 15 Dec 2021 19:33:54 +0000 Marianne Klinker 62256 at Instructor Gretchen Hendricks Named 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellow /news/2021-12/instructor-gretchen-hendricks-named-2021-deans-teaching-faculty-fellow Instructor Gretchen Hendricks Named 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellow Marianne Klinker Thu, 12/09/2021 - 15:41

In This Story

People Mentioned in This Story

Gretchen Hendricks

Body

Gretchen Hendricks, instructor of Business Foundations, was named one of the 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellows. It has been a full circle experience,” Hendricks said.

Frequent collaboration with her colleagues has influenced her teaching style and standards, allowing her to become a better professor as a result. “My fellow professors are mentors and friends, and I count on them to challenge me in ways that encourage me to continue to grow and be my best in my own teaching journey,” Hendricks said.

“Gretchen is a teaching exemplar in both the online and face-to-face classrooms, a combination which is uncommon to find in the same person. She was recently nominated for two 2021 ŃÇÖȚAV Teaching Excellence Awards, one for face-to-face and one for online. Her passion for students and for teaching also allow for engaged conversations amongst colleagues, which promote the same critical thinking skills we ask of our students,” said Jackie Brown, area chair of Business Foundations.

Last year, Hendricks partnered with WGMU Radio to create a new assignment for her BUS 303: Developing Your Professional Skills course. Students were assigned to create podcasts on professional skills topics that were covered in the class, such as emotional intelligence and leadership. Creating the podcasts encouraged students to improve their research, rhetorical awareness, organization and time management, and communications abilities. Several of the podcasts were shared through the WGMU Radio SoundCloud page so the Mason community could enjoy listening to them.

It’s clear that Hendricks has a passion for teaching and coming up with innovative ways to keep students engaged in the classroom, “Working with students to assess and teach them how to leverage their strengths and skills, build a network, and actively connect to opportunities that will fulfill their goals and own potential is an amazing and rewarding experience,” Hendricks said.

Topics

Topics

Costello College of Business News

Costello College of Business Dean's Teaching and Faculty Awards

Thu, 09 Dec 2021 20:41:44 +0000 Marianne Klinker 61761 at Director of the School of Business Minor Programs Named 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellow /news/2021-12/director-school-business-minor-programs-named-2021-deans-teaching-faculty-fellow Director of the School of Business Minor Programs Named 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellow Marianne Klinker Tue, 12/07/2021 - 12:01

In This Story

People Mentioned in This Story

Jeremy Plotnick

Body

Jeremy E. Over time I found that I enjoyed teaching more than most aspects of my ‘day job.’ When I moved back to the United States, I decided to focus on teaching full-time, as I find it personally and professionally very rewarding,” Plotnick said.

“Jeremy is dedicated to making the student experience in our courses both valuable and interactive, often using technology to do so and suggesting additional materials to continue updating the curriculum. Last year he developed a group assignment for BUS 200 asking students to link elements of the circular economy model to an assigned company for a PESTLE* analysis project. The assignment resulted in student recommendations on how the circular economy model could be integrated into the existing operation to enhance both environmental and organizational sustainability,” said Jackie Brown, area chair of Business Foundations.

Last year, Plotnick and Assistant Professor of Business Foundations Leila Austin participated in the 2020 Pedagogy Innovation Showcase, where they redesigned the final project of the BUS 200 Global Environment of Business course. Originally, students were asked to write a report and prepare a group presentation, but instead Plotnick and Austin proposed that students should do a multi-media presentation of their research. “This would involve collating their material and determining how to render their findings in a visually impactful manner, then storyboarding the project in advance of actually preparing the presentation using narrated videos and/or animations. This proved to be a great experience for me, as I would not have thought about this type of execution on my own,” Plotnick said.

Plotnick, who was also awarded Outstanding Professor in Business Foundations in 2020, holds a Bachelor’s of Arts in Political Science and a MBA from Rutgers University, and a doctorate in International Relations from Northern Illinois University. His research interests include fake news/misinformation and corporate reputation, trust and corporate communications, and evolving trends in stakeholder communications.

When it comes to the School of Business Plotnick really values the collaborative ethos among his colleagues. “Working with my colleagues in the Foundations area has been a wonderful experience. I’ve found everyone to be open to helping each other and sharing best practices. I feel very comfortable discussing challenges that I may be having with a class, and know that my peers will provide me with useful advice on how to address them,” Plotnick said.

* A PESTLE analysis is a framework to analyze the key factors influencing an organization from the outside including factors such as political, economic, sociological, technological, legal and environmental.

Topics

Topics

Costello College of Business News

Costello College of Business Dean's Teaching and Faculty Awards

Tue, 07 Dec 2021 17:01:58 +0000 Marianne Klinker 61226 at President-Elect of the ŃÇÖȚAV Alumni Association Named 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellow /news/2021-12/president-elect-george-mason-university-alumni-association-named-2021-deans-teaching President-Elect of the ŃÇÖȚAV Alumni Association Named 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellow Marianne Klinker Mon, 12/06/2021 - 14:53

In This Story

People Mentioned in This Story

Christine Landoll

Body

Christine Landoll, director of Business Engagement and instructor of Business Foundations, was named one of the 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellows. She strongly believes in the good Mason does and that we do as educators. She sees our role as educators as her responsibility to reach every student and to help each one better their professional skillset,” said Jackie Brown, area chair of Business Foundations.

Landoll, president-elect of the ŃÇÖȚAV Alumni Association and the new Alumni Association representative to the Board of Trustees, has received multiple recognitions from the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning’s “Thank-a-Teacher” program. Landoll goes out of her way to help and guide her students, even serving as a faculty advisor for the Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. “This is the oldest business fraternity in the country and accepts students from any area on campus which I love—working across disciplines is key in the business world—it widens your perspective and helps you solve problems more holistically,” Landoll said.

When she was at Deloitte, Landoll served on the School of Business’ Accounting Advisory Council and enjoyed giving back to her alma mater. Landoll was impressed with how Mason encouraged the input of businesses to strengthen curriculum and enhance engagement with students. So when it came time to establish the School of Business’ Management Advisory Council in 2019, it was a no-brainer. “Human resources is a passion area of mine so when I saw an opportunity to establish the Management Advisory Council (which includes HR, consulting, and entrepreneurship) I jumped at it. There is so much potential in each of these areas—I wanted to be a part of that,” Landoll said.

Her favorite thing about the School of Business? The students naturally. “Our students actually make me a better professional, I have to practice what I preach—so I network, I post to social media, I think about what ‘brand’ I am creating, I never stop learning, I get comfortable with pushing myself to be uncomfortable—that is where you grow, and the list goes on—I love that! Plus watching the students do the same and really transform themselves into business leaders is so rewarding and fun to watch,” Landoll said.

Topics

Topics

Costello College of Business News

Costello College of Business Dean's Teaching and Faculty Awards

Mon, 06 Dec 2021 19:53:21 +0000 Marianne Klinker 61081 at Almost Triple Patriot Named 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellow /news/2021-12/almost-triple-patriot-named-2021-deans-teaching-faculty-fellow Almost Triple Patriot Named 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellow Marianne Klinker Mon, 12/06/2021 - 14:43

In This Story

People Mentioned in This Story

Brian Ngac

Body

<a href="/profiles/bngac" title="Brian K. It was then he realized that he enjoyed connecting with students of all ages. In 2013, he interned with the Parsons Corporation, and worked with one of their clients, the United States Air Force, where he provided training for a technology platform he helped develop. “I would say my ability to breakdown complicated subjects into simple components and deliver them effectively to my students is what drew me to teaching and keeps me teaching. And of course, seeing the success and accomplishments of my students during and after they're with me,” Ngac said.

“Since joining in 2019, Brian has been an invaluable member of the ISOM family. Using his expertise in cybersecurity, he has introduced new courses, including an experiential project course with business clients. His teaching evaluations have been outstanding. Brian has also enthusiastically participated in other area activities. I’m really happy that his contributions are being recognized by the school through this award,” said Pallab Sanyal, ISOM area chair.

Ngac has created two courses for the School of Business. The first is a custom section of MIS 462 Honors Seminar in Management Information Systems to help students gain a better understanding of cyber security. “This honor’s seminar gives students an insight into how information security threats, principles, and practices can be, and should be, applied to different areas of the business environment—as well as their own personal lives,” Ngac said.

The second is an experiential course titled Technology Analysis & Proposals with Clients, and is currently being offered as MIS 491 Seminar in Management Information Systems. In this course, students are placed into groups and are assigned to work with a real-world client solving an issue the company is having. Students are asked to propose and present to their clients quantitative analyses and visual models of their client’s current and desired states, solution analysis of alternatives, risk/risk response strategies, interface and architectural design options, as well as implementation strategies. “Students get to experience how projects are run in an agile environment where client requirements are constantly changing. They learn how to interact with, update, present to, and receive feedback from a real client—all of this before they graduate,” Ngac said.

Topics

Topics

Costello College of Business News

Costello College of Business Dean's Teaching and Faculty Awards

Mon, 06 Dec 2021 19:43:34 +0000 Marianne Klinker 61066 at Director of the Master’s In Management Program Named 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellow /news/2021-12/director-masters-management-program-named-2021-deans-teaching-faculty-fellow Director of the Master’s In Management Program Named 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellow Marianne Klinker Mon, 12/06/2021 - 12:31

In This Story

People Mentioned in This Story

Victoria Grady

Body

Victoria M. Through her research and consulting she brings insights from leaders in industry into the classroom,” said Associate Dean of Graduate Programs Paige Wolf.

After receiving her MS in Management from the University of Alabama in Huntsville she was drawn to teaching. Not long after, she had the opportunity to move to Europe, living in a small town in Southern Germany, where she began teaching for the University of Maryland’s European Division. “Once I began working for Maryland, my interest in teaching just continued to grow. When I returned back to the United States a few years later, I pursued my doctorate at The George Washington University with the goal of a career in higher education,” Grady said.

“My favorite part of the Mason community is being a part of a future-focused organization that has an eye toward growth and innovation. In just the last seven years of my tenure at Mason, I have been able to be a part of great change, which is incredibly exciting. I can’t wait to see what the future looks like for the school, and I am honored to be a part of it,” Grady added.

In the last several years, Grady has written articles for the Harvard Business Review, Washington Business Journal, a book in 2019 on workplace attachment, published four peer-reviewed articles, served as a faculty senator, and received the Outstanding Teaching in Management Award in 2016. However, helping her students is her greatest accomplishment.

In her role as director of the MS in Management program, Grady meets with each student applicant to discuss the curriculum and diverse career opportunities available to an MS in Management graduate. Many of these students have recently completed their undergraduate studies and do not have a business background – making them ideal candidates for this program. Designed to provide a foundation in business , MS in Management coursework includes topic areas such information technology, finance, economics, organizational behavior, among others.

Several years ago, Grady met with a recent undergraduate student who majored in German and Spanish, and was concerned about the quantitative component of the program. “I assured her we had great faculty and fantastic support for our grad students concerned about the quantitative aspects of our program. As it turned out, she loved statistics, and did extremely well,” Grady said. The student enjoyed the quantitative aspects of the program so much that she accepted an internship focused in the finance area, and ultimately earned a permanent position within the organization. “Similar stories emerge every year in our program, and I love that! This particular student is continuing her work with this global organization headquartered in Reykjavik, Iceland and has already been promoted with endless future opportunity,” Grady said.

Topics

Topics

Costello College of Business News

Costello College of Business Dean's Teaching and Faculty Awards

Master's in Management Program

Mon, 06 Dec 2021 17:31:51 +0000 Marianne Klinker 61016 at
