We’re going to develop a safe and effective method to remove topical biofilms that doesn’t get in the way of the body’s natural healing process.”</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></figure><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Some biofilms are relatively benign, and many folks have them on the surfaces of their teeth. But harmful biofilms can develop throughout the body for many reasons, like on the skin surface as a result of trauma, and cause potentially fatal infections.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Moran’s primary research focus is on “nanoswimmers"—tiny particles that propel themselves in liquids or biological media. Many researchers are developing them to use in the body, to deliver therapeutic payloads (like antibiotics) to hard-to-reach locations. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <figure class="quote">“One major challenge with bacterial biofilms is how to make them disassemble,"  says van Hoek. “There are three major parts to a biofilm—DNA, protein, and complex sugars. Destroying any one of these three things often leads to biofilm collapse. My idea was to use a sugar cleaving enzyme to attack the sugars in the biofilm, and to attach this enzyme to the front of the nanoswimmers so that they can drill deep into the biofilm.”</figure><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>“What we’re trying to do is develop self-propelled particles that penetrate deep into the thick matrix of the biofilm, dissolving it and also serving as a carrier to deliver antibiotics at the same time,” says Veneziano.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>To manufacture the self-propelled particles, the team is relying on Veneziano’s specialty: DNA origami, which is a method that involves precisely assembling DNA molecules into tiny two- and three-dimensional shapes. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <figure class="quote"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>“With DNA origami, you have the ability to produce tailor-made particles with phenomenal control over the size, shape, and the cargo they carry," says Veneziano. "DNA origami’s versatility will enable the particles to be decorated with various cargoes, such as antibiotics or enzymes that dissolve the biofilm matrix, leaving the bacteria vulnerable to conventional antibiotic treatments.”</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></figure><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Although using enzymes to dissolve the biofilms isn’t new, attaching them onto DNA origami nanoparticles is, which is the trailblazing path Veneziano, van Hoek and Moran will follow. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>“It all started with a ‘what if we tried this?’ type of conversation. We bounced ideas off each other, talking about ways we might make DNA nanoparticles swim, and how that capability might be useful in certain medical situations. That back-and-forth eventually led to this award,” says Moran. “We’re excited to get started.”</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><a href="https://www.nibib.nih.gov/research-funding/trailblazer-r21-awards"><span><span>The R21 Trailblazer Award</span></span></a><span><span><span> is an opportunity for new and early-stage investigators to pursue research programs of high interest to the NIBIB at the interface of the life sciences with engineering and the physical sciences. His research has primarily focused on public understanding of climate change and clean energy, the psychological factors that influence public engagement, and the cultivation of trusted voices such as TV weathercasters and health professionals as effective climate educators.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>Maibach came to Mason in 2007 to create the Center for Climate Change Communication. Now in its 15th year, the center has been studying public perceptions of climate change issues and identifying effective ways to engage the public and other stakeholders on those issues. Photo by Lathan Goumas/Strategic Communications</figcaption></figure><p><span><span><span>A remarkable journey has brought AV Professor Jagadish Shukla from his childhood in rural India to world prominence as a climate researcher.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><a href="http://cola.gmu.edu/shukla/">Shukla</a>, a professor since 1994 and founder of the university’s <a href="https://science.gmu.edu/academics/departments-units/atmospheric-oceanic-earth-sciences">Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Earth Sciences</a> (AOES), has gained international recognition for Mason in that field. He established the Climate Dynamics PhD program at Mason—first in the country—which has produced 50 PhDs.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>In 1979, Shukla joined the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, becoming head of the climate modeling group. There he pioneered an influential insight, an exception to the famed “butterfly effect,” which describes the unpredictable nature of long-term weather conditions. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Using early versions of climate models, Shukla demonstrated that phenomena such as seasonal mean temperature and rainfall, especially in tropical regions, were more predictable than previously understood—what he called “predictability in the midst of chaos.” </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>In 1984, Shukla co-founded the <a href="http://cola.gmu.edu/cola.php">Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies</a> (COLA), then at the University of Maryland. Later, he and his colleagues began collaborating with Mason students and researchers. In 2014, COLA officially became a center in Mason's College of Science. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Along the way, Shukla’s reputation grew. The author or coauthor of more than 250 scientific papers, he received the <a href="https://news.un.org/en/story/2008/04/254762-indian-climate-scientist-wins-uns-top-meteorological-prize">International Meteorological Organization Prize</a>, the field’s highest honor. He modernized India’s weather enterprise by helping the establishment of a center for numerical weather prediction and monsoon forecasting on India’s first supercomputer in New Delhi. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Education has always been a priority for Shukla. Growing up in a village without roads or electricity, Shukla attended a school started by his father, the only person in the village who could read. For the past 40 years, he has returned to India each year, visiting his home village of Mirdha, where he and his wife, Anastasia, fund education and women’s empowerment programs. In 1999, he <a href="http://cola.gmu.edu/gandhicollege/">founded Gandhi College</a><span class="MsoHyperlink"><span>,</span></span> which has about 800 students, the majority women. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The Shuklas have also created the Jagadish and Anastasia Shukla AOES Fellowship Endowment in the College of Science, which will support graduate students pursuing the PhD in climate dynamics, a degree he helped establish. Theirs is among the largest philanthropic commitments ever from a Mason faculty member. </span></span></span></p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/116" hreflang="en">Campus News</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/291" hreflang="en">College of Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/15186" hreflang="en">Trailblazers</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/14441" hreflang="en">Masonat50</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/541" hreflang="en">Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA)</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Mon, 04 Apr 2022 18:53:18 +0000 Colleen Rich 68066 at Mason Trailblazer: Dacheka Kolcum /news/2022-03/mason-trailblazer-dacheka-kolcum <span>Mason Trailblazer: Dacheka Kolcum</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/231" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" xml:lang="">Colleen Rich</span></span> <span>Mon, 03/28/2022 - 12:35</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:body" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasebody"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Body</div> <div class="field__item"><div class="align-center" style="min-width: 50%;"> <div class="field field--name-field-media-video-embed-field field--type-video-embed-field field--label-hidden field__item"><div class="video-embed-field-provider-youtube video-embed-field-responsive-video"><iframe width="854" height="480" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gFMdkD3g-_0?autoplay=0&start=0&rel=0"></iframe> </div> </div> </div> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>When the AV senior Dacheka Kolcum heard about the August 2021 earthquake that devastated Haiti, she immediately jumped into action to help by creating a </span></span></span><a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-get-materials-to-haiti?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=p_lico+share-sheet+spider1c"><span><span><span>GoFundMe</span></span></span></a><span><span><span> page that raised $5,000 to help provide basic necessities for those most adversely impacted by quake.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>The women’s soccer standout from Leesburg, Virginia, was born and raised in Haiti until being adopted by an American family at age 6. That documentation serves as really important evidence in court.”</span></span></p> <p><span><span>Since 2017, Scafide has been experimenting with "seeing" bruises using alternate light sources, such as UV light, which are already widely used in forensics to find evidence like blood or hair fibers. With grant support from the U.S. Department of Justice, she conducted a study and discovered that using alternate light was five times better at detecting bruises on victims across a variety of skin tones than white light. Results of the study were published in the <a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/1556-4029.14294" target="_blank"><em>Journal of Forensic Sciences</em></a>.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>Her work has received national attention from people such as filmmaker and humanitarian Angelina Jolie, who came to Mason to meet with Scafide and learn more about her research. In her work on reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, Jolie <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUHigd85jOU">is advocating for more funding</a> and training for technologies like the one that Scafide has created.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>In November 2021, Scafide, who is known as the “paintball lady” for her unique method of creating bruises, was appointed to a three-year term on the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Organization of Scientific Area Committees for Forensic Science (OSAC), where she will assist in drafting the national standards for forensic nursing and medical practice. </span></span></p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/14441" hreflang="en">Masonat50</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/15186" hreflang="en">Trailblazers</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/691" hreflang="en">College of Health and Human Services</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/116" hreflang="en">Campus News</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/7096" hreflang="en">Mason Momentum</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Mon, 21 Mar 2022 13:27:43 +0000 Colleen Rich 67186 at Mason Trailblazer: Charlotte Woodward /news/2022-03/mason-trailblazer-charlotte-woodward <span>Mason Trailblazer: Charlotte Woodward</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/231" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" xml:lang="">Colleen Rich</span></span> <span>Mon, 03/14/2022 - 12:27</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:body" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasebody"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Body</div> <div class="field__item"><figure role="group" class="align-right"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/2022-02/Charlotte%20Woodward%20-%20A.JPG" width="350" height="443" alt="Charlotte Woodward outside with certificate" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>Charlotte Woodward. Woodward's February 2020 testimony before the Virginia General Assembly was an important step in seeing state legislation passed—unanimously—that prevents disability-based discrimination against people who need life-saving organ transplants. </span></span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/2022-02/84272762_10158576475124869_1042320723730759680_n.jpg" width="450" height="300" alt="four people against a blue background" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>Charlotte Woodward after appearing before with General Assembly with Virginia Senator Todd Pillion and NDSS colleagues Matteo Lieb and Ashley Helsing. She celebrated her 10-year “Heart<span>i</span>versy” in January of this year. Since her lifesaving heart transplant, she has advocated for persons with disabilities to receive equal access to similar opportunities. “I’ve been an advocate my entire life, and I’m always looking for the opportunity to help other people.”</span></span></p> <p><span><span><strong>NOW IT'S HER JOB:</strong> The Fairfax, Virginia, native works for the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), a human rights organization that supports and advocates for the Down syndrome community. As the community outreach associate, Woodward has met with legislators, taken part in numerous advocacy events, served as editor in chief for an upcoming NDSS magazine, and has starred in several TikTok videos, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@ndssorg/video/6858333590355201286">one of which has had 4.4 million views</a>. </span></span></p> <p><span><span><strong>ON A MISSION:</strong> In her advocacy for equal rights for the disabled community, Woodward is working on issues ranging from helping people with disabilities move into community employment settings to protection of federal benefits for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities who wish to marry. “I want society to be aware of the lived experiences of people with disabilities, as well as the abilities that they bring to the world, even though they were born into a world that wasn't made for them.” </span></span></p> <p><span><span><strong>WHAT SHE DOES FOR FUN:</strong> An enthusiastic baseball fan, Woodward enjoys following the Washington Nationals. She is learning how to play electric guitar and has participated in the Global Down Syndrome Foundation fashion show, Be Beautiful Be Yourself.</span></span></p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/336" hreflang="en">Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/15186" hreflang="en">Trailblazers</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/11636" hreflang="en">Advocacy</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/391" hreflang="en">College of Humanities and Social Sciences</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/14441" hreflang="en">Masonat50</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Mon, 14 Mar 2022 16:27:50 +0000 Colleen Rich 66886 at
