Photo by Robert DeCaroli</figcaption></figure><p>Through a partnership with the National Museum of Asian Art and the generosity of Debra Diamond, the curator for South and Southeast Asian art,  DeCaroli’s students studied painted miniatures and manuscript pages dated 1500-1800 from India’s Rajput and Pahari Courts. Students curated their own online exhibit and designed all of the museum-related materials necessary for their display, including labels, wall texts, catalog entries, educational programming, gallery talks and more. </p> <p>Senior Charmaine Mapp explained that museum curation begins with the intention of education. “You need to know what this culture is and what story you're trying to tell,” Mapp said.  </p> <p>From there, the students proposed what they wanted to do based on the 14 paintings they had selected.  </p> <p>“We considered the stories presented in these paintings,” said Mapp, who is a business major. “What did we want to say with our exhibition? What did we want our theme to be, and how would everything connect?”  </p> <p>DeCaroli’s class ultimately settled on the theme of “Loving Krishna: Four Centuries of Indian Painting,” a title which has a double meaning, referring to the Hindu deity as both a loving god and the object of his followers’ love. The exhibit is currently on view at Fenwick Library until February 15. </p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/medium/public/2025-01/processed-ee4dff75-8a04-41aa-86c0-1d4215f8f445.jpeg?itok=_G9OUcPC" width="560" height="322" alt="Loving Krishna show at Fenwick Library" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>"Loving Krishna" runs through February 15 at Fenwick Library. Photo by Charmaine Mapp</figcaption></figure><p>For DeCaroli, the course is just as rewarding for him as it is for his students. “It has been a joy watching the students feel connected to their paintings,” he said. “That enthusiasm provides motivation for excellent research into the history and meaning of the artwork.” </p> <p>With George Mason’s proximity to Washington, D.C., dedicated faculty members and generous community partners, there is so much for students to explore both within and outside of the classroom.  </p> <p>Mapp has been interested in curation for as long as she can remember. “When you walk into a museum or a gallery, you just see the end result. But you often don’t realize that that's created from nothing. So, this was a really good experience, especially being able to go into the archives, work with the actual paintings, and meet people who worked at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art,” she said. </p> <p>“If you’re interested in art, history, or any other field, look at the classes available,” said Mapp. “I didn't know that Curating an Exhibition was a class until I looked in the course catalog. Courses like this really allow you to get more hands-on experience, develop relationships with professors, and make connections that lead to special opportunities.”  </p> <p>“I have been impressed with the class's professionalism and collaborative spirit,” said DeCaroli. “Exhibitions are group efforts and good communication skills are vital to a successful project. This class has been exemplary in that regard.” </p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="fc14ef47-737a-47f6-afdc-3ee44cd23d69"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://historyarthistory.gmu.edu/"> <h4 class="cta__title">Dive into studying art history at George Mason <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="e66b86fe-566e-4ccd-bef5-b7dbc4db859f" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="c61c6704-71e0-43e6-8bc6-6c53dcb04786" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>Related News</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-1a0f22b9c3257e721d3a4e068aca2635ed89b933d6d7cac48915edaa09a10a8d"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"><li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-01/art-history-students-museum-exhibit-unearths-four-centuries-indian-history" hreflang="en">Art history students’ museum exhibit unearths four centuries of Indian history </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">January 29, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-12/commencement-student-speaker-caroline-little-found-her-family-while-george-mason" hreflang="en">Commencement student speaker Caroline Little found her family while at George Mason </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">December 10, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-12/her-new-memoir-animals-creative-writing-professor-examines-her-writing-life" hreflang="en">In her new 'memoir in animals,' Creative Writing professor examines her writing life</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">December 3, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-11/public-history-students-highlight-local-indigenous-communities" hreflang="en">Public history students highlight local Indigenous communities </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">November 20, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-11/george-mason-researchers-receive-neh-funding-connecting-threads-project" hreflang="en">George Mason researchers receive NEH funding for Connecting Threads project</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">November 20, 2024</div></div></li> </ul></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/166" hreflang="en">innovative classes</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/391" hreflang="en">College of Humanities and Social Sciences</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/336" hreflang="en">Students</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 29 Jan 2025 20:31:06 +0000 Katarina Benson 115491 at Breaking down the composting process /news/2025-01/breaking-down-composting-process <span>Breaking down the composting process </span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/271" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" xml:lang="">Lauren Reuscher</span></span> <span>Thu, 01/23/2025 - It was really eye-opening,” said Wells, who came to George Mason from Northern Virginia Community College through the <a href="https://advancesuccess.gmu.edu/" target="_blank">ADVANCE Program</a> and was a member of George Mason’s student organization <a href="https://mason360.gmu.edu/naia/home/" target="_blank">Native American and Indigenous Alliance</a>. </p> <p>“This exhibit was the most crowded I’ve seen Woodlawn in the two years that I’ve worked here. The work the students did on this project made that possible and opened the door for us to interpret Indigenous histories at our site,” said Wells, a program assistant at <a href="http://www.woodlawnpopeleighey.org/" target="_blank">Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House</a>, one of National Trust for Historic Preservation’s locations.   </p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/medium/public/2024-11/publichiststudents2_wells.jpg?itok=Ne2Z9MlM" width="420" height="560" alt="Odessa Lamborn (left) and Sinead Monaghan with their presentation. If it just touches one person or changes the way one person thinks, then it will have done its job.” </p> <p>The exhibit is being brought to George Mason’s Fairfax Campus in 2025 through <a href="https://www.masonexhibitions.org/" target="_blank">Mason Exhibitions</a> and will open on April 15 as “Offerings to the Potomac: Acknowledging Indigenous Place.” </p> <figure role="group"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/medium/public/2024-11/publichistexhibit_woodlawn.jpg?itok=vK9loGTy" width="560" height="315" alt="Guests at Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House for the exhibit. Socks is interning with the General Services Administration (GSA), a federal agency that works on procurement and acquisition services, and after completing a year-long internship, he’s eligible to convert to a full-time position through competitive hiring. </p> <p>“As an intern here, I've been providing overall general support for different projects, as well as creating a newsletter for the team on travel industry updates. A big part of what my office does is work with travel management companies to get them contracted with different agencies,” said Socks.   </p> <p>Rather than zeroing in on one optimal career path, Walker, director of Undergraduate Student Services for the Carter School, said she uses the Career Development Seminar to help students expand their career focus and consider a minimum of three options.  </p> <p>“Conflict is everywhere, our students can apply their degrees to many different career paths—we want them to fully explore those opportunities within the class,” said Walker. </p> <p>“Nathaniel is an excellent student, but more importantly, he is a hard worker that approaches life with humility—these are traits that will take him far in his career as they are valued and important for advancement and success,” she said.</p> <p>For his previous internship at the Department of State, Socks was a staffer for the front office at the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs. </p> <p>“As a staffer, we did everything from drafting department documents to pushing papers to get cleared by heads of leadership. I would say that, because of everything going on in the Middle East, that position was a little bit more hectic and versatile, [whereas] this job with GSA and my responsibilities are more consistent,” said Socks. </p> <p>Socks, who is working on a minor in intelligence studies, said it was originally his goal to work in international relations, but his internship at GSA has opened up the possibility of working in the travel industry. </p> <p>“The GSA also contracts to the Department of State, so there’s still possibilities of me being able to get more experience with international affairs there,” he said. </p> <p>Socks is set to graduate from George Mason in December and hopes to continue his journey at GSA. </p> <p>“I didn't always feel confident in these different positions, especially with them being federal agencies, but the biggest lesson I’ve learned is to just be confident in your abilities,” said Socks. </p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region There she connected with <a href="https://volgenau.gmu.edu/profiles/nkathir" target="_blank">Nathan Kathir</a>, a mechanical engineering professor, who shared the project idea with his students.  </p> <p>“This project is exciting because we are partnering with another unit at Mason outside of CEC,” said Kathir, who is the director of senior capstone projects for mechanical engineering students.  </p> <p>“There is already a lot of art involved in engineering, and this collaboration between music and our department will be very inspiring for future students,” said Kathir.  </p> <p>The four students assigned to the project are working in the Machine Shop on the SciTech Campus and call themselves The Polymaths. </p> <p>“We were thinking about the show’s theme of Leonardo da Vinci and we knew that the Vitruvian man is kind of his staple,” said Mellany Ayala, a senior mechanical engineering student. “I drew a very rough sketch of the Vitruvian man inside a gyroscopic figure, and it ended up being what our team decided to build.” </p> <p>The device, which will hang from center stage throughout the show, has two spotlights as well as projections that will shine down on the students as they perform.  </p> <p>“We’re aiming for something similar to the immersive Van Gogh experience in D.C.,” said Kevin Kuck, a senior mechanical engineering student and the team leader.   </p> <p>The Polymaths met once a week with Billingham and her student research assistant and choir member, Ross Calvin, to discuss the project and work on a proposal for funding. They applied for and received a grant from Mason’s <a href="https://provost.gmu.edu/about/administrative-units/university-life" target="_blank">University Life.</a>  </p> <p>Billingham also created a QR code fundraiser on Facebook and received anonymous donations, she said.  </p> <p>“Hopefully these cool project collaborations keep happening in the future.
