The one-of-a-kind bachelor of arts degree prepares graduates to become leaders in the face of crisis and to confront major threats affecting lives of millions around the globe every day.

Chaluvadi was well acquainted with George Mason. Her sister, 2021 biology alum Pratyusha, also a University Scholar, is now in her final year of medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University. The Richmond, Virginia, native came to the school not only for the financial assistance but also for the proximity to Washington, D.C., where she hopes to land significant internships at key institutions.

As for deferring college to live and learn in Kyrgyzstan, Chaluvadi said she was inspired to learn Russian after being exposed to Russian literature.

“But when I read Russian literature, I don't think that I have a cultural context because I'm reading works in translation, so that loses a lot of the historical and cultural context that it would have if I read it in Russian,” she said. “And also, Russian-American relations are very complicated, and I think it's really dangerous to go into a government field or international field when you don't have both perspectives. So, I figured having the U.S. education is good, of course, but it's dangerous to only have that perspective.”

While learning the Russian language and enjoying the literature, Chaluvadi’s study-abroad experience also exposed her to the people living in the mountainous nation. What she learned from them resonated deeply.

“I got more of a post-Soviet perspective living there,” she said. “Talking to people there was really interesting because I think in the U.S. we hear that the Soviet Union was bad for everyone and no one liked it, which it has truth to it. But when you speak to the older generation in KYrgyzstan, a lot of them actually say that they preferred life in the Soviet Union, which is an opinion I would've probably never gotten if I didn't live there.”

A college year deferred? Clearly it was life-changing.

“It was the greatest experience of my life,” she said. “I miss it so much every day.”

<div Despite being in the middle of winter, it was a beautiful, warm day. I usually do not stay outside much during the winter, but I participated in the outdoor tailgate. It was great to see so many people showing school spirit and see some of my older friends who returned as alumni.

How have you grown while at Mason?
I have grown by challenging myself. I have grown into someone who is not afraid to go outside their comfort zone and fail at times.

What is your best piece of advice for incoming students?
I encourage incoming students to not let their college years pass them by. Most people are in college for only a few years. So, do not let great memories, relationships, and opportunities get away from you. Reach out to professors who are researching what you are interested in, start a conversation with the person sitting beside you in class, and go to the club-interest meeting even though you do not know anyone. It is easy to keep your head down, but try to push yourself.

What’s next for you?
I am in the process of applying to law school for fall 2023.

Topics

Topics

Students

Graduation

Schar School

internships

Honors College

University Scholars

Thu, 08 Dec 2022 17:25:23 +0000 Colleen Rich 103486 at Mason was the university next door, now it’s this freshman’s home /news/2022-09/mason-was-university-next-door-now-its-freshmans-home Mason was the university next door, now it’s this freshman’s home Colleen Rich Thu, 09/15/2022 - But Dutton, who will major in government and international politics, was steadfast and earned her scholarship.

“In the moment, I was just numb,” Dutton said. “But I took it, like, she made it this far, because had she died before I left, I wouldn’t have been able to make it. She made sure I got down [to Mason].”

“Competing for a full scholarship and the death of a pet are big life events for any of us,” Bramesco said. “That she was able to carry all the emotions and still be a full participant during our group challenge certainly stood out to me.”

Dutton, from Sicklerville, New Jersey, about 25 miles southeast of Philadelphia, definitely stands out.

She was student body president at her high school. When the school’s principal was asked about students who might be interested in joining the NAACP East Camden County Youth, he immediately thought of her. And when Sicklerville had this summer’s Juneteenth celebration, Dutton, a part of the Black Lives Matter movement, was the host on stage.

She plans to one day be on an even bigger stage when she runs for office, maybe to be a senator from New Jersey.

“Since I want to run for office, I need to help the driving force of my generation,” Dutton said. “It seems like everyone wants to be involved. I just want to be part of that and inspire others to get involved as well.”

Dutton, who also wants to be a lawyer, got a taste of that involvement when she spoke in front of the New Jersey Apportionment Committee, which is in charge of drawing the lines of the state’s 40 legislative districts.

“When they gerrymander the map, they break up the communities and suppress the minority vote,” Dutton said. “I did not want that to happen to my community.”

“When I spoke, they really took time to listen,” she added. “They actually emailed me later and told me ‘great job and we’re really going to look into it.’ I really did feel heard.”

Dutton feels as enthusiastic about Mason, even though it wasn’t originally on her radar. During a trip to the area to visit colleges, she and her mother drove by a Mason sign on the highway.

“And when we toured, I just loved it,” Dutton said. “It felt so right.”

It helped when a current student with whom Dutton was on line at a campus coffeehouse talked Mason up as well.

“She just told me how much fun she was having and how many opportunities she had,” Dutton said. “She wasn’t my major, but she sounded like she was going far. The award, which was established in 1971 by the Board of Directors of The Sperry and Hutchinson Company to honor Edwin, Frederick, and Walter Beinecke, supports graduate study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

As early as her freshman year’s Principles of Research and Inquiry (HNRS 110) course, Okidi has demonstrated her commitment to multi-dimensional and interrogative research. Okidi, who is from Kampala, Uganda, utilized her HNRS 110 coursework to explore community-inclusive strategies to address wetland degradation in Kampala, Uganda’s capital city.

In her initial investigation of the wetland degradation in Kampala, Okidi featured a proactive three-phase plan for educating the public on the current state of the area: 1) survey the community, 2) spread information, and 3) assess how perceptions are influenced. Afterwards, Okidi went on to develop the project under OSCAR’s Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (URSP), investigating the political ecology of Kampala’s wetland management.

Alongside her passion for conservation, Okidi’s interests in African and African diasporic literature, ecocriticism, and Black feminist ecologies highlight the strength of her academic prowess and reflect the interdisciplinary nature of scholarship within the Honors College. Whilst keeping in line with this tradition of scholarly excellence at Mason, Okidi blazes a trail for future Beinecke scholars in the Honors College.

Each recipient of the Beinecke scholarship receives $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school which Okidi looks forward to using in her pursuit of a PhD in Africana Studies and exploring race and ethnicity, gender, and environment in Ugandan literature and culture.

Topics

Topics

Honors College

Scholarships

University Scholars

Fellowships

Fri, 15 Apr 2022 21:12:06 +0000 Wasiq Muhammad Muhammad Ali 68731 at Incoming freshmen are first recipients of the I-Achieve Scholarships /news/2020-09/incoming-freshmen-are-first-recipients-i-achieve-scholarships Incoming freshmen are first recipients of the I-Achieve Scholarships Colleen Rich Thu, 09/03/2020 - 05:00

Kristen Alleyne

Kristen Alleyne and Elene Lipartiani, incoming freshmen at AV, have been honored with I-Achieve scholarships for academic excellence. The awards are being given for the first time this year, as part of a grant Mason received from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation last fall.

The scholarships are intended for students who graduated from Mason’s Early Identification Program (EIP) and will be attending Mason as University Scholars in the Honors College. EIP is an extensive outreach program for first-generation college students in the Northern Virginia area. EIP provides access to educational resources for students from seven local public-school systems and is intended to equip students with skills that will help them become lifelong learners, leaders and responsible global citizens.

“The scholarships enable Mason to attract and retain some of the most motivated first-generation students who have completed Mason’s EIP program,” said Richard Todd Stafford, director of communications for Mason’s Honors College.

“Both of these students have impressive and interesting credentials,” said Eva Bramesco, associate director of undergraduate admissions and director of the University Scholars Program. “They blow you away with what they have already accomplished.”

Elene Lipartiani

Khaseem F. She wants to study neuroscience to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

Alleyne, 17, was born in Guyana, and came to the United States in 2012. Focused on church and public service, Alleyne served on Volunteer Arlington’s MLK Day of Service Advisory Council. This summer, she received Volunteer Arlington’s Youth Service Award.

An EIP student, Alleyne graduated Washington-Liberty High School as a valedictorian and is a member of the National Honor Society. It involves a great combination of science and leadership skills.”

Bramesco said that both Alleyne and Lipartiani received the I-Achieve scholarships because of a belief that “they will go on to do great things.”

“It is an investment in their future,” Bramesco said.

Thu, 03 Sep 2020 09:00:18 +0000 Colleen Rich 13766 at
