When I look for friendships, workspaces, and all other types of connections, I find myself gravitating toward people who want the same, a life filled with supportive people, doing their best, whatever that looks like, and wanting the best for the people around them. I can’t say that wanting that has changed since coming to Mason, but my efforts to seek it out certainly have.</span></span></span></span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2024-05/240511191e.jpg?itok=LueJ-WEM" width="350" height="281" alt="Celine Apenteng with Dean Alp at Carter School Degree Celebration" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>Senior of the Year Celine Apenteng with Carter School Dean Alpaslan Özerdem. Without a doubt, I can say that the key players are the local leaders we see every day who help us when no one is looking. As people look for opportunities, solutions, and answers, don’t overlook what your local or regional efforts can do for the people you know <em>and</em> the people you don’t.</span></span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><strong><span>What’s your best memory at George Mason? </span></strong></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span><span>During my junior year, I was Student Body vice president. Although the entire year is filled with great memories, one that sticks out the most is the fall farmer's market. So many people had come out to support the local vendors we had brought to campus, Student Government members were out in full force, and we were all having a great time. We danced to music, played games, and of course ate really good food. Seeing everyone out just happy to be in that environment made me really happy, and I hope that event continues with the same excitement that made so many people feel the presence of true community at Mason.</span></span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><strong><span>What is your best piece of advice for incoming students? </span></strong></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span><span>You are on time. If you think you’re behind, you're not. There’s no science to living life and college is just one chapter of a (hopefully) very long book! It can be easy to feel like everything is passing you by, but just think back to high school and where you thought you’d be now. Your hopes will change, your dreams will change, and you will change. And that’s all just a part of the process of being alive. So don’t stress about what you can’t control and enjoy what you can.</span></span></span></span></p> <p> </p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="0dddd8c9-c7d5-4740-994f-b07840da4ad5"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="/admissions-aid"> <h4 class="cta__title">Join the Mason Nation <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="dc87692f-dd3b-432a-9315-5fe6dc7a074c" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="21364feb-9d3c-4dbe-a321-8a6f62692846" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>Related News</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-251076df84bbc3146ea49fec124c50e0c0284cfb39806a840ea2c9757a5fae52"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"><li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-06/earning-masters-degree-and-graduate-certificate-online-worked-perfectly-neurosurgeon" hreflang="en">Earning a master’s degree and graduate certificate online worked perfectly for neurosurgeon Nick Marko</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">June 24, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-06/mason-korea-commencement-caps-week-festivities" hreflang="en">Mason Korea Commencement caps off a week of festivities</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">June 20, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-05/going-global-mason-koreas-first-computational-and-data-sciences-graduate" hreflang="en">Going global as Mason Korea’s first computational and data sciences graduate</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 21, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-05/outstanding-graduating-student-amanda-magpiong" hreflang="en">Outstanding Graduating Student: Amanda Magpiong</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 17, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-05/senior-year-found-true-community-george-mason" hreflang="en">This Senior of the Year found ‘true community’ at George Mason</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 9, 2024</div></div></li> </ul></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/2801" hreflang="en">Senior of the Year</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/481" hreflang="en">Graduation</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/2971" hreflang="en">Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/336" hreflang="en">Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/821" hreflang="en">Honors College</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/556" hreflang="en">Schar School of Policy and Government</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/18821" hreflang="en">Schar School Student Spotlight</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/19426" hreflang="en">Schar School News for May 2024</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Thu, 09 May 2024 21:24:11 +0000 Colleen Rich 112006 at Student Commencement speaker Zayd Hamid learned how to lead through his many roles at George Mason /news/2024-05/student-commencement-speaker-zayd-hamid-learned-how-lead-through-his-many-roles-george <span>Student Commencement speaker Zayd Hamid learned how to lead through his many roles at George Mason</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/231" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" xml:lang="">Colleen Rich</span></span> <span>Wed, 05/08/2024 - Now, as he graduates in May, he’ll share his story as the student speaker at Spring Commencement 2024 on May 9.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>As a first-generation Guyanese American student, Hamid has found his calling in empowering his generation of student leaders with the education and experience they need to solve the world’s grand challenges.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span class="intro-text">“The best way to describe my journey at George Mason would be evolving leadership and being in those spaces where I could represent my fellow students helped shaped me into the leader I am now,” said Hamid, who is also a member of the <a href="https://honorscollege.gmu.edu/">Honors College</a>. </span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>He has been recognized at the state and national levels for his work supporting higher education funding and following graduation, he will continue that work through George Mason’s <a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/programs/masters-programs/public-policy-mpp">master of public policy program</a>.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Hamid put himself through college, working through the federal work-study program for over two-and-a-half years at <a href="https://recreation.gmu.edu/">George Mason Recreation</a>. In Spring 2023, he represented George Mason students on a panel with the Association for Public Land Grant Universities speaking to congressional staff about the importance of the federal work-study program that he benefited from. <span><span>Through the <a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/">Schar School of Policy and Government</a>, Hamid attended </span></span>the U.S. Congress panel on education affordability.</span></span></span></p> <p><iframe align="right" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="10" height="600" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/m4qhM2m0nyU" title="YouTube video player" width="300"></iframe></p> <p><span class="intro-text">“My story is built on the foundation of everyone who’s supported me—family, friends—and a lot of that support system as an adult has also been from George Mason. I have so much support from faculty and members of the administration,” said Hamid.</span></p> <p><span><span><span>During his time as an undergraduate, Hamid also took a leading role in <a href="https://sg.gmu.edu/join/mason-lobbies/">Mason Lobbies</a>,</span> an annual event in which Student Government brings students down to the state capitol in Richmond to lobby state legislators for legislative items that impact Mason and its students.</span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>This year, Hamid helped bring more than 70 students to meet with more than 30 offices in the Virginia General Assembly. He led a student team speaking to State Senator Danica Roem, who represents the Science and Technology Campus, and Delegate Will Morefield. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Roem, who is also Zayd’s hometown representative in the General Assembly, is one of his long-time role models. Hamid met Roem for the first time in his high school senior class council. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>“We realized that we had no idea how to represent people or lead as students, so we called our representative and arranged a meeting and she made a really tangible impression on me,” said Hamid. “I spent a lot of my time in student government trying to live up to that model of leadership.”</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>In 2023, Hamid was the first-ever recipient of Student Advocate of the Year from the National Institute for Lobbying and Ethics (NILE). </span></span></span><span>Hamid was approached by top lobbyist and George Mason alum Bill McCabe of K9s for Warriors, who studied government and international politics at Mason and got his master’s in public policy as Hamid plans to do. Hamid sees McCabe as a successful George Mason alum in his industry and as someone whose level he strives to reach. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>“Seeing McCabe go from doing Mason Lobbies at a student level to being an award-winning lobbyist was incredible,” said Hamid. “It’s great to see someone in my industry get to those heights. The George Mason degrees paved the way for him.”</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>"It's always great to meet students who are interested in pursuing policy and government affairs as their career after graduation,” McCabe said. “When I first met Zayd at NILE's Top Lobbyist Reception, I could instantly see his passion for the profession. His hunger to learn and develop as an advocate will serve him well whether it's at the federal, state, or local levels of government. I'm confident Zayd will thrive in whichever industry he chooses to pursue.”</span></span></span></span></span></p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div class="paragraph"><span><span><span><span>After a rousing round of vocal warmups, the students—nearly half of them students in the </span><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/"><span>Schar School of Policy and Government</span></a><span>—join hands and recite “The Covenant,” a poem passed down since the team’s founding more than 50 years ago. At the completion of the poem and a after a round of pep talks from coaches and captains, the team disperses to compete against teams from across the country for the title of most persuasive, informative, or poetic speaker (among other titles).</span></span></span></span></p> <p class="paragraph"><span><span><span><span>With a glance at the “wall of champions,” students can trace their competitive lineage decades back—with Schar School students scattered throughout the wall. One alumnus, former captain Jacob Thompson and two-time national champion, credits the Schar School for its seamless integration with the team.</span></span></span></span></p> <p class="paragraph"><span><span><span><span>“Being a Schar School student and competing on the Mason speech team is really the best of both worlds,” he said. “You get a chance to travel the country and practice your advocacy with the team then directly apply those skills to help change the country through the connections and opportunities the Schar School provides.”</span> </span></span></span></p> <p class="paragraph"><span><span><span><span>The Forensics Team has existed longer than Mason itself. With a focus on both competitive success and education, the team has attracted Schar School students since its founding. Its current cohort of 10 Schar School students compete in a wide range of events, from poetry interpretation to extemporaneous speaking—an event in which the speaker is given a political question and 30 minutes to prep a seven-minute memorized answer with sources and argumentation. Students hail from across the country with varying prior speech experience, but one thing binds them together: a passion for advocacy.</span></span></span></span></p> <p class="paragraph"><span><span><span><span>Evanna Koury, a first-year Schar School </span><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/programs/undergraduate/government-and-international-politics"><span>government and international politics</span></a><span> major, sought the speech team as an avenue for both personal and academic passions.</span></span></span></span></p> <p class="paragraph"><span><span><span><span>“Being a queer, disabled woman interested in government and political advocacy is challenging because I can't often get my foot in the door,” she said. “The Forensic Team changed that. I get seven to 10 minutes of uninterrupted talking time to amplify my voice with an amazing community.”</span></span></span></span></p> <p class="paragraph"><span><span><span><span>Mason’s speech team has been among its most successful competitive teams of all time. The team has been a Top 5 national program consistently since its founding, taking second in the country at the national championships for the past three years.</span></span></span></span></p> <p class="paragraph"><span><span><span><span><span>With advocacy as a focus, it is unsurprising the teams student population is so dominated by Schar School students, including seniors Molly Izer and Eleni Mercer, who share the team’s captainship and are both students in the <a href="https://honorscollege.gmu.edu">Honors College</a>. In fact, Schar School students earned an impressive array of awards at this year’s 2024 American Forensic Association National Speech Tournament, held in April, as well as taking second place in Division I at the National Forensic Association Tournament, its sister tournament held just a week later.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <ul><li><span><span><span><span><span>Eleni Mercer, senior government and international politics major</span></span></span></span></span> <ul><li><span><span><span><span><span>Semifinalist, Informative Speaking</span><span> (AFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>2nd place, Program Oral Interpretation</span><span> (AFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>National Champion, Program Oral Interpretation (NFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>Semifinalist, Poetry Interpretation</span><span> (AFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>9th place Individual Sweepstakes</span><span> (AFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>2nd place, Duo Interpretation</span><span> (AFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>Octofinalist, After Dinner Speaking (NFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>Octofinalist, Informative Speaking (NFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>3rd place, Duo Interpretation (NFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> </ul></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>Molly Izer, senior government and international politics major </span></span></span></span></span> <ul><li><span><span><span><span><span>Semifinalist, Impromptu Speaking</span><span> (AFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>4th place, Impromptu Speaking (NFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>National Champion, Informative Speaking</span><span> (AFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>National Champion, Informative Speaking (NFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>National Champion, Poetry Interpretation</span><span> (AFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>Quarterfinalist, Persuasive Speaking (NFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> </ul></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>Grace Martinez-Cora, freshman government and international politics major</span></span></span></span></span> <ul><li><span><span><span><span><span>Octofinalist, Poetry Interpretation (NFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> </ul></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>Lexi Martinez, sophomore government and international politics major</span> </span></span></span></span> <ul><li><span><span><span><span><span>Quarterfinalist, Prose Interpretation</span><span> (AFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>Octofinalist, Prose Interpretation (NFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>Semifinalist, Informative Speaking</span><span> (AFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>Octofinalist, Dramatic Interpretation (NFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span><span><span>Quarterfinalist, Informative Speaking (NFA)</span></span></span></span></span></li> </ul></li> </ul><p class="paragraph"><span><span><span><span>“It is always exciting to have Schar School majors on the team,” said Dawn Lowry, director of the Forensics Team and lifetime <em>forensicator</em>. “They possess the unique combination of idealism and practicality.
