She was one of the founding staff members of the university’s Center for Consciousness and Transformation (now known as the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being), worked as a corporate facilitator at George Mason’s team development and experiential learning facility the EDGE, and for five years served as adjunct faculty for the School of Integrative Studies. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>In addition to teaching in the program, Guenther will spearhead ODKM’s #30in30 campaign, which will involve a social media push, the development of an advisory board, alumni relations efforts, and relationship-building with local and regional organizations. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>“I’m looking forward to telling the ODKM story,” she said. “It is the only program of its kind in the immediate region, and there is no better academic program for leaders and helping professionals in the area.”</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>In mid-September, the current cohort of ODKM students hosted a daylong learning community in which they became instructors to those from many walks of life and at varying stages of their own careers. The capstone event is traditional in the program as the Schar School students practice what they have learned in the course. This learning community’s theme was styles of conflict and titled “The Art of the Ordeal: Conflict Tools and Techniques.”  </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>ODKM was founded by Thatchenkery as he was completing his PhD dissertation at Case Western University in April 1993. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>“I was looking for a job in a business school, but what I was working on—postmodernism and hermeneutics—wasn’t particularly attractive to them,” he said with a laugh. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>As it happened, George Mason was beginning a new academic department called Program on Social Organizational Learning (PSOL), with a tenure-track position for researching and teaching hermeneutics. “Within an hour I had sent my application,” he said.</span></span></span></span></p> <figure role="group"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/2024-09/odkm-program-web.jpg" width="800" height="500" alt="Several people watch as a woman with a nametag writes something on a large poster on a table." loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>The cohort-based ODKM program features a “learning community” capstone, where students take over as teachers. Photo by Bryan Regalado.</figcaption></figure><p><span><span><span><span>The founders of the program, economics professors Don Lavoie and Jack High, “wanted to create a truly interdisciplinary department which would be one of the first of its kind anywhere,” Thatchenkery said. “As we all know, academic departments have disciplinary boundaries. Economics departments have economists and psychology departments have psychologists. But how about a department with faculty from different disciplines such as sociology, psychology, anthropology, computer sciences, literature, management, and economics?”</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>That was, he said, “a revolutionary idea at that time and I was sold on it. A few weeks later I would get a job offer from Don Lavoie and my first day on the job was mid-August 1993.”</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>It wasn’t long after that Thatchenkery was pitching a master’s program in organization learning (OL), which would be the first such program anywhere, he said. After much internal maneuvering around various disciplines and hard-earned approval by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), the PSOL degree program launched in fall 1996 with its first 23 students, cohort number one.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>The program was rebranded ODKM in fall 2009 and continues to teach mid-career students leadership, creative problem-solving, and analytical skills invaluable to their organization, work, and lives. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><em><span>For more information about George Mason’s Organization Development and Knowledge Management program, </span></em><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/programs/masters-programs/odkm-ms"><em><span>see the program’s website.</span></em></a></span></span></span></p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_associated_people" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-associated-people"> <h2>In This Story</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">People Mentioned in This Story</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/profiles/thatchen-0" hreflang="und">Tojo Thatchenkery</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/profiles/sguenthe" hreflang="en">Stacey K. href="https://sg.gmu.edu/">Student Government</a> just made sense: Cuesta, an international student, plans for nonprofit work in support of her home country of Colombia, and McAulay dreams of a future in diplomacy.</p> <p>Now, the two of them are leading with a vision of an empowered and interconnected campus community. </p> <p>Cuesta, a double major in <a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/programs/undergraduate/government-and-international-politics">Government and International Politics</a> and <a href="https://economics.gmu.edu/">economics </a>and in the <a href="https://honorscollege.gmu.edu/">Honors College</a>, was inspired by her peers to run for president. “As an active member of the Hispanic Leadership Alliance, Honors College Connects, and the First-Gen+ Center, I got to know what was happening on campus, what students needed, and that understanding inspired me to pursue a pathway of helping other students,” she said. Her connections also gave her a wide platform from which she could launch her political career. </p> <p>For McAulay, a senior <a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/programs/undergraduate/ba-international-security-and-law">international security and law major</a>, three years in Student Government gave him a strong understanding of the university, its structure, and how to best organize people to accomplish a shared vision. When election season came around, Cuesta and McAulay thought their combination of connections and institutional knowledge made a winning ticket. </p> <p>Cuesta and McAulay worked hard over the summer to start constructing the groundwork for their term. One word stands at the core of their vision: community. </p> <p>“We want to build bridges between the diverse organizations at George Mason,” Cuesta said. “We want to set that foundation, not only to create community but to then sustain community so it continues for generations to come.”</p> <p>Cuesta wants to see a campus where groups are less siloed. “We have so many student groups for a wide range of identities, and we see a trend of students just sticking with their groups. And while we want students to have those spaces, we also want the groups to connect with each other more, to work together to achieve their shared goals and to continue to develop an interconnected and supportive campus community.”</p> <p>“When I first came to George Mason,” McAulay added, “it was right out of COVID-19, and the community wasn’t able to thrive. But with each year, we’re restoring that sense of community, and it’s important to keep it growing for each new class that comes in."</p> <p>President Cuesta and Vice President McAulay hit the ground running, starting the semester off with events to bring the campus community together such as tailgating a recent women’s soccer game. Both hope that their lasting mark on the university will be one of community. </p> <p>“There are many resources here, so many opportunities to socialize, make friends, network, find your community, and build your career,” Cuesta said. “I hope George Mason continues to be a place where students can be authentically themselves and feel like they belong.”<br />  </p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="9a720c36-c23f-4973-bdd0-5e13032d5fde"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://sg.gmu.edu/"> <h4 class="cta__title">Learn more about George Mason's Student Government <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="b1817ddd-0c3a-490f-9726-410995d15c0f" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="e6144410-bda5-41e8-88ba-ebed5175c67e" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>More stories from our student</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-00d8533182fed9e4af429eea7a88da9fb741b889f861204f40e9b457ccd65dab"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"><li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-11/george-masons-outdoor-forensic-research-lab-hosts-guest-researchers-louisiana-hbcu" hreflang="en">George Mason’s outdoor forensic research lab hosts guest researchers from Louisiana HBCU </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">November 13, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-11/after-earning-master-public-policy-degree-marine-captain-staton-headed-congress" hreflang="en">After Earning a Master of Public Policy Degree, Marine Captain Staton Is Headed to Congress</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">November 11, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-11/bringing-veterans-global-perspective-nursing" hreflang="en">Bringing a Veteran’s Global Perspective to Nursing</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">November 8, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-11/marine-corps-fellow-captain-desiree-peterson-studying-improve-military-processes" hreflang="en">Marine Corps Fellow Captain Desiree Peterson: Studying to Improve Military Processes</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">November 8, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-11/fond-feathery-farewell-students-help-track-wetland-birds-heading-south-winter" hreflang="en">A fond, feathery farewell: Students help track wetland birds heading south for the winter</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">November 8, 2024</div></div></li> </ul></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="bf83e99d-a29b-47a6-8423-bb6746ef192f" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/336" hreflang="en">Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/346" hreflang="en">student government</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/556" hreflang="en">Schar School of Policy and Government</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/391" hreflang="en">College of Humanities and Social Sciences</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/821" hreflang="en">Honors College</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/20351" hreflang="en">Schar School News for September 2024</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/18821" hreflang="en">Schar School Student Spotlight</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 25 Sep 2024 17:27:17 +0000 Sarah Holland 113981 at
