Faculty and Staff Experience Survey Town Hall

Faculty and staff are invited to join Human Resources, President Washington, and Gallup Senior Partner Stephanie Marken for the Faculty and Staff Experience Survey Town Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 3–4 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus, Hub Ballroom. This is a chance to review the key findings of the Faculty and Staff Experience Survey and collaborate on the next steps to enhance the community at George Mason.

This event will also be available via livestream webinar to ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate. Those attending in-person will have an opportunity to ask questions live. Online questions will not be accepted through the webinar, but questions may be submitted electronically during the event to engageHR@gmu.edu.

October Staff Senate Meeting with President Gregory Washington

��AV President Gregory Washington will join the October Staff Senate meeting as guest speaker on Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to noon. Constituents are invited to attend the meeting in-person on the Fairfax Campus in Merten Hall, Room 1201, or via Zoom.

Constituents may submit a comment or question by Monday, Sept. 23. Live questions will also be accepted during the meeting, time permitting. Get more details.

George Mason Rock the Block with Fairfax City

Join the annual George Mason Rock the Block at the City of Fairfax Old Town Square on Friday, Sept. 27. This event features live music, a beer garden, food vendors, George Mason giveaways, and more. The music starts at 6:30 p.m. George Mason Rock the Block is an annual community welcome event for students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Come dressed in your best George Mason gear. Learn more.

CCEE and LEAD Merging to Form the Center for Leadership and Intercultural Engagement

University Life announces the merger of two units—the Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment (CCEE) and the Leadership Education and Development Office (LEAD)—to form the new Center for Leadership and Intercultural Engagement. This merger will enhance the units' ability to serve the university community through programs and services that foster leadership development and intercultural humility.

During this transition, services will continue from the offices' current locations, and existing websites will be maintained as a new online presence is created. For questions, contact Tamara Thomas and Nick Lennon, directors, Center for Leadership and Intercultural Engagement.

Fall Career Fair

George Mason’s Fall Career Fair is coming up on Wednesday, Sept. 25, and Thursday, Sept. 26, on the Fairfax Campus in the Johnson Center. Students will have the chance to meet employers, get guidance from alums, and find part-time jobs, full-time opportunities, and internships.

More than 200 employers will attend the fair. For two days before the fair, University Career Services will host the annual Resume Clinic and “Prepare for the Fair” workshop. Please encourage students to attend both events to make their best impression at the Career Fair. Learn more.

MESA to Microsoft 365 Migration Completion

Information Technology Services (ITS) has completed migrating all MESA M: Drive mydata and shared drives to Microsoft 365 (M365). The MESA system will be fully decommissioned on Wednesday, Nov. 6. All original data on MESA is now read-only and will be removed during the decommissioning process.

To provide further support, ITS will continue to hold M365 training sessions through September. If you cannot attend, all training sessions are recorded and stored in the Collaboration Collective MS Team – MESA Migration Project channel. The channel will remain open past the project's close to serve as a forum for M365 collaboration with peers.

Peace Week and International Day at Mason Square

As part of Fall 2024 Peace Week, the Carter School presents the second annual International Day at Mason Square on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 3:30–5:30 p.m. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to connect, share their voices, and learn about diverse cultures through live entertainment, food, crafts, and more. Peace Week, from Sept. 23–27, focuses on exploring the frontiers of innovation and pioneering solutions for conflict prevention and transformation. Through online and in-person seminars, workshops, and interactive sessions, participants will engage with strategies, practices, and policies to enhance innovation and entrepreneurship in peacebuilding efforts. Study Abroad Fair

The Global Education Office will host the Fall 2024 Study Abroad Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 17, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus, East Plaza. Please encourage your students to attend so they can learn more about global education, talk to faculty and partners, and enjoy light refreshments. Rain site is the Johnson Center, Dewberry Hall.

Annual Grad Fair

George Mason will host its annual Grad Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 4–6 p.m. in the Johnson Center on the Fairfax Campus. Current George Mason undergraduate students and anyone considering attending George Mason for a graduate degree or certificate are invited to explore the options at the Grad Fair.

Laurence Bray, senior associate provost for graduate education and leader of the Graduate Division, will be available to answer questions and discuss the power of George Mason’s research and educational opportunities. View the full list of colleges and schools attending the fair and RSVP.

New Traffic Pattern at Prince William Parkway and University Boulevard

New traffic patterns will go into effect in mid-September at the intersection of Prince William Parkway and University Boulevard near the Science and Technology Campus. To improve traffic operations and safety, left turns will no longer be permitted at this intersection. This will affect the way drivers enter and exit the SciTech Campus from these routes. Training and Professional Development

IT Security Awareness Training Deadline

The deadline for George Mason employees, including contractors, affiliates, and student wage workers, to complete their IT Security Awareness Training is Thursday, Oct. 31.

Information Technology Services (ITS) assigned the training to employees’ MasonLEAPS accounts. Those with specialized functions received mandatory role-based training.

This year, ITS is changing how it enforces compliance. Users must complete the training before their semi-annual password reset. If the training is not completed by then, users will be allowed to change their passwords and have 14 days to complete the training. Failure to comply will result in the user’s account being disabled. Additional information about how compliance will be enforced is available on the ITS website. Safe Zone+ Program Updates

The primary mission of George Mason’s Safe Zone+ Program, like the LGBTQ+ Resources Center, is to create a safer, more welcoming and inclusive campus environment, to strengthen community, and to encourage networking among faculty, staff, and students toward the goal of supporting the well-being of LGBTQ people. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to sign up for a Safe Zone+ Program virtual session.

An asynchronous “Intro to LGBTQ+ Communities” module is now available on Canvas Commons, which allows faculty and other course administrators to reuse the module in their courses. Check out the module. Contact lgbtq@gmu.edu with questions.

Apply to be a Fenwick Fellow

The Fenwick Fellowship is awarded annually to a Mason faculty member to pursue a research project that uses and enhances the University Libraries' resources, while advancing knowledge in their field. Tenured, tenure-track, and term (multi-year appointment) faculty at George Mason are eligible to submit proposals. Project proposals that specifically align with the University Libraries’ ever-increasing activities in the area of digital scholarship (e.g., digital humanities, data-focused research, development of digital content and curation) are encouraged, and, as always, the selection committee will be especially interested in research projects that make substantial use of the libraries' resources and services.

The fellowship provides:

One award of $5,000 to be used for the acquisition of library research materials that may be needed for the research project, as well as associated research costs
Use of an office in Fenwick Library for the term of the fellowship (Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2025)

The application deadline is Friday, Oct. 4. The 2025 Fenwick Fellow will be announced at the end of the fall academic term. George Mason Space Day

NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren, who graduated from nearby Robinson High School, will headline George Mason Space Day on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Fairfax Campus. Lindgren will be joined by aerospace engineer Oleg Goushcha from NASA Langley Research Center, who contributes to analyzing the Space Launch System for future Artemis missions.

Trunk or Treat at George Mason

Contemporary Student Services has officially opened registration for volunteers to decorate trunks and compete for prizes at the third annual George Mason Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. Registration is open to university offices and student clubs and organizations. To register to decorate a trunk and give out candy, complete the form .

The George Mason Trunk or Treat is a free event for families in the George Mason and local communities. Last year's event was attended by more than 500 parents, caregivers, and children. Get more information and RSVP to attend.

Scalia-Ginsburg Colloquy to Explore Biden SCOTUS Legislation on Constitution Day

The Antonin Scalia Law School commemorates Constitution Day with its fifth Scalia-Ginsburg Colloquy exploring both sides of President Biden’s proposed major changes to the U.S. Supreme Court. The colloquy is titled, “Biden’s SCOTUS Proposal: Crucial Reform or Constitutional Crisis?” All three participants served on Biden’s Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court.

The Colloquy, which will be held online on Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 5:30–6:45 p.m., brings together two constitutional law scholars who will present both sides of this legislation. The event is free. Read more information and register.

The speakers for this program are Caroline Fredrickson, former president of the American Constitution Society and senior fellow at the Brennan Center for Justice, and Adam White, executive director of Scalia Law’s C. Boyden Gray Center for the Study of the Administrative State and resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. Tara Leigh Grove, the Vinson & Elkins Chair in Law at the University of Texas School of Law, will moderate.

Nanotechnology Day

Join Nanotechnology Day at the SciTech Campus on Monday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Katherine Johnson Hall. This family-friendly celebration invites students of all ages to explore the fascinating world of nanotechnology through hands-on activities, engaging demonstrations, and enlightening talks given by real researchers. Tony and Olivier Award-winning singer and actress Lea Salonga headlines the 2024 ARTS by George! benefit concert performing songs she has made famous throughout her extraordinary four-decade career on Broadway and in animated movie blockbusters. Born in the Philippines, Salonga originated the lead role of Kim in the West End and Broadway productions of Miss Saigon, and she was the first Asian cast member to perform the role of Eponine in Les Misérables on Broadway. Recognized by fans of all ages as the singing voice for two animated Disney princesses—Jasmine in Aladdin and Fa Mulan in Mulan—Salonga was named a “Disney Legend” by the Walt Disney Company in 2011.

Disney Concerts and AMP Worldwide present Encanto: The Sing-Along Film Concert national tour. Encanto lovers of all ages can sing along with their favorite Grammy Award-winning songs performed by a live band while watching the full film. Encanto: The Sing-Along Film Concert will include all the music of the Academy Award-winning film, including iconic hits like “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and “Surface Pressure.” Fans are encouraged to dress up as Mirabel, Luisa, Isabela, or any of their favorite characters from the film and to use their voices to transform the Hylton Center’s Merchant Hall into one big celebration of the Madrigal family.

Erinys Quartet

Though named after the Furies from Aeschylus’s The Oresteia, the Erinys Quartet aims to captivate with heavenly string music. Comprising violinists Elizabeth Stewart and Joosep Reimaa, violist Marja Räisänen, and cellist Stergios Theodoridis, the ensemble formed at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. They are currently the quartet in residence in the Nina von Maltzahn String Quartet program at the Curtis Institute of Music. The ensemble will perform Bartók's String Quartet No. 3, Sz. 85 and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 12, Op 127.

The classic vampire tale Dracula opens Manassas Ballet Theatre’s season with this chilling and bloodcurdling production. Over the years, choreographer Mark Morris has created more than 150 dance works that have earned him the title of “the most successful and influential choreographer alive, and indisputably the most musical” (New York Times). This program features audience favorites and rare gems, including Pacific (1995), “a beautiful, contemplative piece;” (Dancetabs), set to music of Lou Harrison; Going Away Party (1990), which Critical Dance dubbed "thoroughly enjoyable, a little risqué and laugh-out-loud funny at times;” Rock of Ages (2004), set to music by Franz Schubert; and Castor and Pollux (1980).

The Spot Expands Its Hours, by Popular Demand
Last fall, in response to the George Mason community’s growing demand for plant-based dining, Mason Dining introduced The Spot: Where Plants Power You. This vibrant dining venue offers a diverse menu of vegan and vegetarian options, showcasing the versatility of plant-based ingredients. Due to its success and student requests, The Spot will now extend dinner hours from Monday to Thursday until 7 p.m., providing more opportunities to enjoy its innovative, plant-powered dishes in a welcoming community space.

Free Shake Day at Shake Smart
Mason Dining is excited to announce the grand opening of Shake Smart, a new smoothie and shake concept in Fenwick Library, designed for busy college students. Founded by two college students, Shake Smart offers a balanced, protein-focused menu that fits seamlessly into active lifestyles. Shake Smart will host a Free Shake Day on Thursday, Sept. 12, with complimentary shakes for all. This location supports George Mason’s commitment to providing nutritious dining options on campus. Planning an event on campus? Faculty and staff are responsible for ensuring their events are included on the university calendar, Today@Mason, for both scheduling and promotional purposes. All events listed on Today@Mason or any other published calendar must be scheduled in 25Live, the university's scheduling software.

On the 25Live event request form, select one audience from the "categories" section of the form. The form provides information on important fields for calendar postings. Please read all instructions and be sure to enter a detailed description of the event to be shared on the calendar. Include any RSVP links or website links related to the event. The scheduler will review each submission and add the event to a calendar when processing the request.

Born in the Philippines, Salonga originated the lead role of Kim in the West End and Broadway productions of Miss Saigon, and she was the first Asian cast member to perform the role of Eponine in Les Misérables on Broadway. Recognized by fans of all ages as the singing voice for two animated Disney princesses—Jasmine in Aladdin and Fa Mulan in Mulan—Salonga was named a “Disney Legend” by the Walt Disney Company in 2011.

Though named after the Furies from Aeschylus’s The Oresteia, the Erinys Quartet aims to captivate with heavenly string music. Comprising violinists Elizabeth Stewart and Joosep Reimaa, violist Marja Räisänen, and cellist Stergios Theodoridis, the ensemble formed at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. They are currently the quartet in residence in the Nina von Maltzahn String Quartet program at the Curtis Institute of Music. The ensemble will perform Bartók's String Quartet No. 3, Sz. 85 and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 12, Op 127.

Solon Simmons, professor of conflict and analysis in the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution, enters his first year as the ��AV Faculty Senate president. At George Mason since 2006, Simmons has been a member of the senate for eight years. He also has served, among other roles, as interim dean for the Carter School and the university’s vice president for global strategy during the pivotal start-up years of Mason Korea.

The George caught up with Simmons to discuss the senate’s recent achievements, issues the group will be tackling this year, and how his academic expertise might serve him as Faculty Senate president.

What do you consider some of the Faculty Senate’s major achievements in recent years, and what issues do you envision being focal points for the senate in 2024-25?

One thing that becomes immediately clear when you look at the history of the Faculty Senate here at Mason is the strong legacy of independent leaders who have served there. In just the past decade, we have seen significant growth in collaboration between faculty and administrative leaders. What stands out to me are the roles that senate leaders played in co-chairing the last presidential search, chairing the recent provost search, and in establishing new norms for the acceptance of financial support [of the university]. Faculty representatives have served on every major initiative in the university from promoting the rights of term faculty, to supporting Mason’s COVID-19 response, to developing the conversation about how to have difficult conversations across lines of difference.

This coming year will bring many challenges, but my hope is that we focus on our people, using evidence to center employee engagement and placing proper value on the contributions of both faculty and staff and helping to modernize and update our concept of what a university is for. We are here to pursue both excellence in knowledge and access to wisdom, and all of us—staff, student workers, tenured faculty, term faculty, and administrative/professional faculty—have an important role to play. The faculty job is changing, but in an era of automatic thinking and information overload, it is more important than ever.

How do think your expertise in peace and conflict resolution will serve you both within the Faculty Senate and as the faculty representative on the Board of Visitors?

I direct what’s called the Narrative Transformation Lab. Our baseline assumptions are that emotions matter as much as arguments do and that facts are only intelligible when situated in relation to values. From what I have seen of our new board members, they are very principled people who want the best for the university as articulated from their own point of view. Assuming that everyone brings the best intentions to the case makes it easier to look for those win-win opportunities that are almost always available if you search for them, and no one should forget that win-win is a peace and conflict resolution concept if not THE concept that defines the field.

From a global perspective, American universities have a real advantage over most other countries. Our decentralized structure allows and even forces each of our institutions to serve as global laboratories for the organization of knowledge, producing an intellectual ecology in which we have developed and sustained most of the best universities in the world. Look at the data. Whether it’s Nobel Prizes or global university rankings, the world still looks to the U.S., and increasingly the U.S. looks to Mason. The board members know what a great value proposition Mason is and they have no intention to compromise that. Our job is to make sure intentions match the available opportunities and to keep faculty centered in that conversation.

How significant of an issue is AI for Mason faculty? What sort of discussion is the Faculty Senate having about the implications of AI?

I’m really excited about AI, especially that part that works with language and writing. I like the metaphor of the old Texas Instruments calculator that people often use about the 1970s. We used to think of using a calculator as “cheating” just like we think of writing with the aid of a language model today. I use AI almost every day now, and I find it makes me that much smarter. It feels like what it was like in the ‘90s to start using Google and the other search engines that we had back then. You can just do so much more. Over the summer, the leadership team had a great presentation from a colleague at the University of Michigan who made a point that stuck with me: all good uses of AI require a human-in-the-loop. Maybe someday machines will tap into some form of universal consciousness and discover how to do without us, but so far, it looks like only the human being has the wisdom, contextual awareness, and moral judgment that is necessary to apply knowledge to meaningful problem solving.

If AI is not something to be afraid of but something to use, nevertheless, it really is time to wake up. What we mean by knowledge is changing and our modes of assessment will have to change along with that. It seems to me that AI places emphasis on lived experience and the present moment that will challenge all of us to grow in ways that will be both painful and exhilarating.

Since the pandemic, Faculty Senate meetings have taken place entirely on Zoom. Will that continue? Do you find that meeting virtually leads to greater engagement from senators and from faculty around the university?

There is nothing like face-to-face interaction, but we will continue to use Zoom for the actual Faculty Senate meetings. I think it’s just part of the new normal of higher education. Not only can a senator access the meeting from any one of our many campuses and locations (including Mason Korea), but this format allows for a much larger array of visitors to attend as well. I think the format expands the value of the senate to the university community and makes it easier and more efficient for us to manage our deliberations.

You’re coming up on two decades at the university. What are the major differences between the George Mason you came to in 2006 and the George Mason of today?

I will admit that the first I heard of ��AV was its famous Cinderella Final Four run in 2006, the year I arrived. Back then it was described almost like a commuter college with peaks or pillars of excellence. Now the university feels like a major player. In 2006, we were known for a variety of innovative and special programs like the old multidisciplinary Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (now the Carter School) that I joined. Now, we are good at almost everything we do, and getting better each year. I like President Washington’s line that this is the most competitive university environment in the country, and still we excel and grow. This is a great place to work and a great place to be a professor. My goal is to make the job even better.

Last fall, in response to the George Mason community’s growing demand for plant-based dining, Mason Dining introduced The Spot: Where Plants Power You. This vibrant dining venue offers a diverse menu of vegan and vegetarian options, showcasing the versatility of plant-based ingredients. Due to its success and student requests, The Spot will now extend dinner hours from Monday to Thursday until 7 p.m., providing more opportunities to enjoy its innovative, plant-powered dishes in a welcoming community space.

The 12th Annual Mason Nation 9/11 Day of Service will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 11, on the Fairfax Campus. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni are invited to participate in a variety of service projects.

New Traffic Pattern at Prince William Parkway and University Boulevard

New Procedures for Trash Collection and Cleaning in Campus Offices

��AV is implementing new procedures for trash collection and cleaning in campus offices. These changes support the university's efforts to increase efficiency and cut costs. These changes went into effect on Aug. 1 in university offices at the Fairfax, Mason Square, and Science and Technology campuses:

Faculty and staff are responsible for emptying the individual trash can in their workspace into larger trash receptacles in common areas. Housekeeping staff will no longer empty personal trash cans located at desks/cubicles/private offices.
Workspaces/offices will be cleaned weekly.

Common spaces and high traffic areas will be cleaned daily, and trash will be removed from common area trash receptacles at least once daily. The cleaning schedule will not change in restrooms, kitchens, and common areas.

These changes are being implemented after a pilot program was conducted on the SciTech Campus and in Merten Hall on the Fairfax Campus during the 2023–24 academic year. Read more about the changes.

In RE(FORM)ER, Jorge Bañales (MFA Visual and Performing Arts ‘21) and Steven Luu, current master's student in visual and performing arts, methodically deconstruct and reconstruct carriers of meaning: photographs, film negatives, experimental video, sculptures, and more. Working with found or discarded materials, the artists maintain an intense focus on process to develop ideas around memory, mnemonics, and materiality. As an office manager, Amir Hasan supports ��AV’s Statistics Department. She was previously recognized with a 2023 Trailblazer Award from the College of Engineering and Computing for her work. Her efficiency and organizational and event planning skills set her apart. For her outstanding work, she has been awarded September Employee of the Month.

Hasan’s colleagues specifically highlighted her hard work with departmental events and outreach, such as the 30th anniversary of the department event and the George’s reception at the Joint Statistical Meetings 2023, which is described as an important annual gathering of the statistical community. Professors from other universities, including George Washington, Yale, and Georgetown, also recognized Hasan for her efforts.

Along with her work responsibilities, Hasan is also part of the planning team for the university’s Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander Affinity Group.

“She is a trailblazer [of the Mason value] ‘diversity is our strength,” said department chair Jiayang Sun.

“Amir is a star employee,” Sun added. “She provides exceptional support to the department's functions and operations. She actively seeks opportunities to acquire new skills and generously shares her knowledge, not only to the department members but also staff in other departments.”

“Amir is always ready to learn new skills and to step up when needed,” said Martin Slawski, an associate professor in Statistics. “She not only responds promptly to all requests by faculty and staff, but also constantly strives to contribute to the growth and improvement of administrative processes in our department.”

Hasan is also known for her fantastic door decorations, having won both the 2022 Elegant Award and the 2023 North Star Award in her department’s door decoration competition. She takes pride in her ability to "heighten everyone’s spirits” with her fun designs.

How did you come to Mason:

I first came to Mason in 2014 for my son’s orientation. Then my daughter also enrolled here in 2017. Both of them graduated with master's degrees. I loved Mason so much the first time I came that I decided to move to the neighborhood. My kids, knowing how much I loved Mason, kept insisting that I try and find a job here. I eventually did in 2022.

Best day on the job:

Everyone is so helpful and friendly that it made me feel at home from the very first day, making every day the best day on the job at Mason. If you want to know what the most satisfying day is—it’s those days when I get to help students in need.

What do you like best about working at Mason:

Mason understands the meaning of “it takes a village to raise a good citizen.” The motto “students first” is a vision for ensuring a brighter future. On a personal level, Mason has provided me with opportunities I never thought possible, especially fulfilling my dream of going back to school to study—I’m pursuing an online MBA.

What do you like to do when you’re not working:

Socializing with my senior neighbors, gardening, painting, and studying.

New Procedures for Trash Collection and Cleaning in Campus Offices

Faculty and staff are responsible for emptying the individual trash can in their workspace into larger trash receptacles in common areas. Housekeeping staff will no longer empty personal trash cans located at desks/cubicles/private offices.
Workspaces/offices will be cleaned weekly.

These changes are being implemented after a pilot program was conducted on the SciTech Campus and in Merten Hall on the Fairfax Campus during the 2023–24 academic year. Read more about the changes.

Exhibit: ‘RE(FORM)ER’ at Fenwick Library

In RE(FORM)ER, Jorge Bañales (MFA Visual and Performing Arts ‘21) and Steven Luu, current master's student in visual and performing arts, methodically deconstruct and reconstruct carriers of meaning: photographs, film negatives, experimental video, sculptures, and more. Working with found or discarded materials, the artists maintain an intense focus on process to develop ideas around memory, mnemonics, and materiality.

RE(FORM)ER is on view on the Fairfax Campus in Fenwick Gallery through Nov. 16. An opening reception will be hosted on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 5–7 p.m. RSVP.

The Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Impact invites students, faculty, and staff to attend the "NASA, Earth, and Space" event on Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 1–2:30 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus in the Johnson Center Cinema.

Jack Kaye, NASA's associate director for research in the Earth Science Division, will discuss current space exploration efforts and future prospects. Following his talk, a panel of George Mason faculty, including Anamaria Berea, Liping Di, Jim Kinter, and Peter Plavchan, will present their NASA-funded research, share outcomes, and explore collaboration and funding opportunities. Born in the Philippines, Salonga originated the lead role of Kim in the West End and Broadway productions of Miss Saigon, and she was the first Asian cast member to perform the role of Eponine in Les Misérables on Broadway. Recognized by fans of all ages as the singing voice for two animated Disney princesses—Jasmine in Aladdin and Fa Mulan in Mulan—Salonga was named a “Disney Legend” by the Walt Disney Company in 2011.

As the fall 2024 semester starts, George Mason students, faculty, and staff are reminded that traffic on and around the Fairfax Campus greatly increases during the first few weeks of the semester. The following campus parking and transportation guide will help minimize potential parking and traffic delays.

During the first few weeks of the semester, we suggest allowing an extra 30 minutes to arrive on campus. Though some parking spaces are more convenient to your destination than others, the Fairfax Campus has more than enough spaces to accommodate all vehicles. However, many general parking permit areas fill at peak class times. Lots L and K are usually the last to fill and the best places to look if arriving to campus after 10 a.m. with a general permit.

Parking Permit and Visitor Parking
A valid parking permit (virtual or hangtag) is required to park outside visitor areas. Those without permits should use visitor parking in the garages or in various lots with daily parking options. Virtual parking permits are sold online only at parking.gmu.edu. Permits are sold with daily, weekly, monthly, and semester options.

Traffic Supervision
At times during the morning, late afternoon, and early evenings, campus police cadets will direct traffic around campus. Please be alert and follow the cadets’ directions.

Share the Road
Please be mindful of sharing the road safely with an increased number of pedestrians and vehicles, including scooters, motorcycles, bikes, cars and trucks. Get more tips on safely sharing the road on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

Please never park or leave a scooter or bike on any sidewalk or blocking any pathway.

Event Parking Impacts
Campus Drive between Global Lane and Patriot Circle will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 29, from 6–11 p.m. for the IVth Night event at the RAC Field. Follow detour signs.

Shuttle Service
Check the Mason Shuttles webpage for fall semester schedules. Early in the semester, allow extra time to catch your shuttle, as buses may be full at peak times.

Mason IDs are required; no guest riders are permitted until further notice.
Every bus is outfitted with a bike rack, ADA accommodations, and Wi-Fi.
Shuttle Tracker: Get real-time arrival info for Mason Shuttles and local public transportation. Download the RideSystems app from Google Play or the App Store.

Sandy Creek–Vienna Metro Shuttle—Runs between Fairfax Campus and Vienna Metro Station with buses every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday–Friday, increasing to every 20 minutes from 4–11 p.m., and limited service on weekends from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Fairfax–Science and Technology Campus Shuttle—Connects Fairfax Campus with the SciTech Campus, operating Monday–Thursday from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., with departures every 30–40 minutes and Fridays with departures every 70 minutes. Weekend service is every two hours between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Gunston Go-Bus—Provides service between various locations including the RAC, Sandy Creek Transit Center, and Fair Oaks Mall, among others.

Fairfax/Mason Square (Arlington) Shuttle—Operates between Sandy Creek Transit Center and Van Metre/Hazel Hall, with hourly service Monday–Thursday from 7:15 a.m. to 11:05 p.m. and limited Friday service; no weekend service.

West Campus Shuttle—Runs between West Campus Parking Lot and Presidents Park, with service every 20 minutes from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday–Friday, and every 40 minutes thereafter. No weekend service; use the On-Demand Shuttle instead.

On-Demand Shuttles (weekends only)—Offers shared-ride service with designated pick-up and drop-off points focused around the Fairfax Campus; does not serve Mason Square or the SciTech Campus.

Fairfax City CUE Bus—Students and employees can ride any of the four Fairfax City CUE routes to and from the Rappahannock River Lane stop. The CUE bus travels throughout Fairfax City and to the Vienna Metro stop for free.

Virtual Permits
Your license plate will serve as your parking permit. No more hangtags. It is important that your vehicle is associated with your permit, not just your parking account. Read step-by-step instructions on how to assign your license plate to your permit here.

To remove vehicles that you no longer use, own, or possess, complete the Vehicle Deactivation Request form to remove the vehicles from your parking portal.

Short-Term Parking
Students, faculty, and staff who do not require parking on campus regularly may want to consider daily, weekly, and monthly options:

Parking garage visitor parking: $5-19 daily
Lots L/K: $11.50/day
Lot P (Field House): $8.50/day
West Campus Lot/Rapidan River Road: $5.50/day
General Lot Evening (valid after 4 p.m.): $8.50/day
SciTech Campus Daily: $8.50/day
Lots L/K Weekly: $35
Lots L/K Monthly: $85

Daily permits are available online at parking.gmu.edu. You can purchase them in advance on the parking portal or via ParkMobile when you arrive. Pay stations are available near the exits of parking garages and decks and in Lot P only. They accept Mason Money, MasterCard, Visa, prepaid validations, and cash.

Science and Technology (SciTech) Campus Parking

Fairfax–SciTech General, Lot I, Lot J, Lot R, and reserved parking deck permits are valid in the Occoquan, King, Discovery, Hylton, and Tower parking lots at the SciTech Campus. Please follow signage in these lots, as parking spaces may be designated for various uses or permits.
The Shops parking lot in front of Beacon Hall has faculty/staff, event permit, and 30-minute parking on the northwest side. The southeast side of the lot (left side facing the building) is for retail parking only.
At the SciTech Campus, daily parking permits are available online for $8.50/day, or via ParkMobile at $2 for the first hour and an additional $1 per hour, to the $8.50 daily maximum.

Mason Square Parking (Arlington)
You must work or be attending class at Mason Square to be eligible to purchase a Mason Square parking permit. Access cards are needed for both the Van Metre and Vernon Smith garages. Hourly visitor parking is only available in the Van Metre Garage. For more information, go to the Mason Square parking webpage.

Please use caution when approaching both garages with the ongoing construction of the new Fuse building.

Fairfax–SciTech Campus permits are not valid at Mason Square without authorization from Parking Services.
In Vernon Smith Garage, Mason Square general permit faculty/staff and student parking is available on levels B3–P1 and on level B4 after 6 p.m.
- There is no guarantee of space in the general permit parking area.
- Please pay careful attention to signage, as some spaces are designated for retail use only.

Alternative Transportation Options

Bicycling
As a recognized bicycle-friendly university, George Mason has more than 1,400 bicycle parking spaces around the Fairfax Campus, as well as plenty of bike racks at the regional campuses. Go to bike.gmu.edu for more information.

Covered bike parking is available under shelters around campus and on Levels 1 and 2 of Rappahannock River Deck.
George Mason’s bicycle registration program offers registrants free bike locks and bike lights.
The Patriot Bikes check-out program is available at the RAC and the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
There is a dismount zone between the East Building and Enterprise Hall. Golf carts are not permitted in the dismount zone, and those using bikes, scooters, skateboards, or skates must dismount and walk. This is for everyone’s safety.

Carpooling Options
Students and employees may qualify for a 20–40% rebate on their reserved parking permits by carpooling. Go to the carpool/vanpool page for more information.

The Carpool Zones provide designated locations for share riders to drop off between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m., Monday–Friday. To park in a carpool zone, you must have at least two people in the car, including the driver, and a general student or faculty/staff parking permit.

Lot A Carpool Zone: Accessed off of Mattaponi River Lane
Rappahannock River Deck Carpool Zone: The first level of the Rappahannock River Deck General permit area

MasonCommutes: Find carpool partners or a bike or transit buddy within the Mason community. Propose a trip or request rides on Mason Commutes, the go-to place for Mason ridesharing.

Sign up with your Mason Net ID and password on MasonCommutes.
Carpooling can be a great way to save money and to reduce Mason’s carbon footprint.

Electric Scooter Parking
Electric personal scooters and shared mobility scooters do not require a permit. They must be parked at a designated scooter corral parking area located around campus or at or adjacent to a bike rack. Get more information.

Please remember that electric bikes, scooters, and other electric personal transportation devices cannot be brought indoors at George Mason.

Zipcar
Zipcars on the first level of the Rappahannock Deck and in Lot R and are available for rental by the hour. Get more information and sign up for George Mason discounts for Zipcar.

Free Mpox Vaccine Clinic on Campus

George Mason’s Student Health Services and Employee Health and Well-Being will offer a free mpox vaccination clinic for students, faculty, and staff on Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Register here (only name and email required).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides information on who should receive the vaccine. The mpox vaccine requires two doses, and clinic staff will schedule the second dose. Contact ehw@gmu.edu for clinic questions or your health care provider for personalized advice on the vaccine. Learn more about mpox on the CDC website.

Parking and traffic closures will occur on the Fairfax Campus from Wednesday, Aug. 21, to Sunday, Aug. 25, to facilitate the move-in of nearly 6,000 residential students.

Key units across the university work together to make the move-in experience as efficient as possible. Your patience and cooperation are appreciated as we welcome the newest Patriots to campus.

Traffic impacts will occur around campus, particularly near Braddock Road, Roanoke River Road, Lots J and K, and Rappahannock Deck. Specific parking areas will be reserved for move-in.

Parking Closures and Impacts

Lots J and K will be used by students and families checking in for move-in at the Ángel Cabrera Global Center and for post move-in parking.
Rappahannock Deck: General permit area on Levels 1–3 (including faculty/staff general area on Level 3) will be closed to all but move-in traffic from Wednesday, Aug. 21, through Sunday, Aug. 25, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. From Tuesday, Aug. 20, through Saturday, Aug. 24, Levels 1–3 will be closed overnight at 11 p.m. Any vehicles left on these levels after 11 p.m. will be ticketed and towed.
- Rappahannock Deck reserved permit holders may park on reserved Levels 3–5.
- General faculty/staff permit holders may park only on the rooftop level from Wednesday, Aug. 21, through Sunday, Aug. 25.
- Student General permit holders should use other General parking areas, such as Lots A, C, L, and K.
- The reserved levels will only be accessible via the University Drive entrance on Level 2. The Patriot Circle permit entrance and exit will be closed. The reserved level gates will be open to accommodate families and students moving into the residence halls.
Lot I: Closed to all but move-in traffic from Thursday, Aug. 22, at 11 p.m. to Saturday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m.
Lot R: Closed to all but move-in traffic from Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 11 p.m. until Saturday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m.
Short-Term Lots: Washington Lot near Presidents Park (off Shenandoah River Lane) will be closed from Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 11 p.m. to Thursday, Aug. 22, at 6 p.m. The short term parking lot by Eastern Shore will only be available to move-in traffic with disabled permits from Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 6 a.m. until Sunday, Aug. 25, at 5 p.m.
Merten Lot will be used for oversized vehicles for move-in that cannot fit inside Rappahannock Deck.

Traffic Closures and Impacts

New resident students will be required to check in at the Ángel Cabrera Global Center on Aug. 21–22. Expect heavy traffic on Braddock Road, Roanoke River Road, and on Patriot Circle around Lots J and K.
Global Lane between Mason Pond Drive and Lot K (in front of the Global Center) will be closed to all traffic except disabled parking from Wednesday, Aug. 21, through Saturday, Aug. 24.
Expect heavy traffic approaching the housing move-in areas around Rappahannock Deck and Presidents Park.
Patriot Circle will be closed in front of Rappahannock Parking Deck from Wednesday, Aug. 21, until Sunday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m. Access the visitor section of the deck via Rappahannock River Lane and Patriot Circle.
Patriot Circle eastbound will be closed at George Mason Boulevard from Wednesday, Aug. 21, until Sunday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m.
University Drive: Expect heavy traffic between George Mason Boulevard and Rappahannock Deck.
Chesapeake River Lane will be closed to all traffic except commercial deliveries and disabled parking from Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 6 a.m. until Sunday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m.
Rivanna River Lane will be closed to all but service and delivery vehicles and disabled parking from Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 6 a.m. until Sunday, Aug. 25 at 6 p.m.

Additionally, from Thursday, Aug. 22, at 11 p m. until Saturday, Aug. 24, at 7 a.m., the portion of Lot A in front of EagleBank Arena will be closed for New Student Convocation.
