It took Kami Watson-Huyse six years and many jobs on and off campus to get an undergraduate degree at ��AV. Watson-Huyse, BA Speech Communication ’94, was entering her last semester when she found herself out of options and feared that she wouldn’t be able to graduate.

“There were just a lot of really difficult semesters and that particular semester, I was short the money,” said Watson-Huyse. “I didn’t know what I was going to do, and back then there was no such thing as a GoFundMe, you know?”

"I got the news that I was going to get that scholarship, and it was just such a relief,” said Watson-Huyse.

That scholarship was a gift from journalist Barbara Walters who spoke at Mason in 1993 and asked that her speaking fee be donated to a deserving female journalism student.

Thanks to Walters’ scholarship, Watson-Huyse was able to graduate at the end of that semester. Walters, who died in December, was known worldwide for breaking barriers and being the first woman to co-host a U.S. news program.

“I've also got a nice little letter from Barbara Walters here,” said Watson-Huyse. “She said, ‘I was pleased to hear from you and to hear that you've received the Central Fidelity Barbara Walter Scholarship. Congratulations. Your letter made my day. With best wishes,’ and then she signed it.”

Although Walters wanted the scholarship to go to a female journalism student, there wasn't a journalism major at Mason at the time, but journalism classes were offered to in the Department of Communication.

Mason now offers resources to students who face financial challenges similar to Watson-Huyse's such as the Stay Mason Student Support Fund.

“Stay Mason was created in 2015 to assist students facing unexpected financial hardships and emergencies,” said Maggie Olszewska, the director of the Student Support and Advocacy Center. “Students who meet the basic eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply for funding.”

“The center also offers consultations for students who wish to explore their financial well-being and develop a plan for financing their education. Students can request a meeting with the financial well-being staff by filling out the Request Support form,” said Olszewska.

Some of Watson-Huyse’s on-campus jobs included being a residential advisor and working as the advertising manager for the student-run newspaper, Broadside, the precursor to The Fourth Estate.

“It was so much fun, and I met so many great friends. I just loved the work,” said Watson-Huyse. “I had this tiny little Mac computer, and it had Adobe PageMaker. We'd create the ads, print them out, and then we'd cut and wax them onto the pages—it’s so old fashioned.”

Her love of advertising and marketing continued to grow throughout her time at Mason.

“I learned that I loved [public relations] because of one of my professors, Steven Gladis,” said Watson-Huyse, who went on to work in D.C. as a director of communications for the Manufactured Housing Institute for 10 years. She started blogging in 2005 and also began working with social media influencers.

“I always look for what I call the magic middle of influencers, people that have really strong devoted communities,” she said. “[Because of my job] I got to do so many great things, like go to the White House when Bill Clinton was president. We filmed in the Oval Office.”

Watson-Huyse is currently the CEO of her own company, Zoetica, and works mostly in health care. She is accredited in Public Relations with the Public Relations Society of America. Watson-Huyse also won the Women Who Mean Business Award from the Washington Business Journal in 2022.

She founded multiple organizations including Social Media Breakfast of Houston, a free grassroots monthly meetup of social media marketing professionals.

She lives in Houston, Texas, with her husband and three children.

��AV will expand its research and real-world impact in Northern Virginia with a pair of projects that were made possible by the efforts of U.S. Representative Gerry Connolly (D-VA) to address cybersecurity and mental health care needs.

Mason will receive $1 million in federal funding to support the creation a first-of-its-kind Mason Center for Excellence in Government Cybersecurity Risk Management and Resilience, and nearly $1 million for the Saving Lives and Decreasing Health Disparities project. Funding for both efforts came as part of the federal omnibus appropriations bill that President Biden recently signed into law to fund the government through Fiscal Year 2023.

Connolly, whose 11th District includes Fairfax, is a senior member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and his party’s lead on the Subcommittee on Government Operations.

“��AV is a pillar of our community, but the effects of its world-class education and world-changing research can be felt throughout the country,” said Connolly.

The future Center for Excellence in Government Cybersecurity Risk Management and Resilience will act as a strategic partner in federal government cybersecurity and IT modernization efforts, translate state-of-the-art research on technology modernization and cybersecurity in federal practice, collate and disseminate best practices on federal government agency cybersecurity, and foster U.S. government cybersecurity organizational capacity.

The center will bring together experts in IT modernization, cybersecurity, and critical infrastructure systems to develop and provide in-person, hybrid, live virtual, and online executive education, tabletop exercises and workshops for federal government IT and cybersecurity executives and middle managers. In addition, the center will leverage Mason’s Institute for Digital Innovation, which integrates transdisciplinary centers and labs with deep interdisciplinary expertise across all facets of cybersecurity research, governance, policy, and education.

Amarda Shehu, associate vice president of research at the Institute for Digital Innovation, and professor of computer science with Mason’s College of Engineering and Computing, will operate the center along with J.P. Auffret, the director of research partnerships and grants initiatives in the School of Business and the director of the Center for Assurance Research and Engineering in the College of Engineering and Computing.

“This is further evidence of the value and depth of Mason’s research, programs, and outreach in cybersecurity,” said Ken Ball, dean of the College of Engineering and Computing. “This funding will help us strengthen our programs and generate new discoveries that will make our nation more secure.”

“We are exceptionally grateful to Congressman Connolly for championing the central importance of cybersecurity for the federal government,” added Shehu and Auffret. “We are excited to engage with federal IT and cyber executives to modernize and secure systems, and advance excellence.”

Mason has a 25-year history in government IT leadership and governance education, including as a founding partner in the U.S. Federal CIO University and as a founding partner in the International Academy of CIO. Mason’s partners include the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative, the Commonwealth of Virginia state government, the West Virginia state government, Connected DMV, and others.

Andre Marshall, Mason’s vice president for research, innovation and economic impact, praised Connolly for his continued leadership in the areas of federal cybersecurity and IT modernization.

“I am so proud to have secured funding for the Mason Center for Excellence in Government Cybersecurity Risk Management and Resilience, the first of its kind, and I can’t wait to see the results in action,” he said.

The Saving Lives and Decreasing Health Disparities is other project championed by Connolly to receive federal funding, as Mason will receive $943,883 to play a critical role in addressing the mental health needs of young people in Northern Virginia.

The project will train community clinicians to serve diverse, low-income youth and families and provide access to low- to no-cost, culturally sensitive evidence-based assessments that can be easily implemented in community mental health settings. The project leads, Mason psychology professor Christianne Esposito-Smythers and Psychology Department chair Keith Renshaw, in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, hope to decrease mental suffering and, ultimately, the need for longer and more intensive treatments, emergency services, hospitalizations, and loss of life to suicide among the most affected populations.

“From world-class education to world-changing research, Mason plays a pivotal role in bettering the lives of folks across Northern Virginia,” Connolly said. “I am so proud to have secured funding for the Saving Lives and Decreasing Health Disparities project, and I can’t wait to see the results in action throughout the 11th District.”

As part of the project, Mason will work with community partners to address mental health problems through accurate assessment and identification of youth mental health difficulties, Esposito-Smythers said.

“This work is intended to increase the effectiveness of mental health services, reduce the likelihood of life-threatening behavior, and decrease the costs of care for our lowest-income youth and families,” she said.

Before the pandemic, more than 36% of youth in the United States reported persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness, according to federal statistics. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among youth ages 10-24, and rates of emergency department visits for youth suicide risk increased 50.6% during the pandemic. In 2020, 86 children in Virginia died by suicide.

“Mason plays a vital role in this community by bringing our research to bear on important issues such as mental health within vulnerable populations,” said Ann Ardis, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. “This funding from the Appropriations process, with support from Representative Connelly, will allow the Department of Psychology faculty to advance critical services to those in need.”

The funding for Mason is part of more than $28 million Connolly secured for the commonwealth.

“These vital investments in our region’s future are poised to meet Northern Virginia’s needs in health care, infrastructure, education and housing,” Connolly said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to assist in addressing some of the greatest challenges facing the 11th District of Virginia as we move on from the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare for our shared future.”
