How long have you been doing it?</span></span></span></span></span></h4> <p><span><span><span><span>I had never worked on a farm before! But I like to work with my hands, have a great desire to learn about growing and harvesting food, and there are a good number of small farms around this part of Virginia. I found JK Community Farm when I was looking for farming jobs one day. I didn’t find a job that made sense for me, but volunteering has been a great alternative. I’ve been doing it since 2021. <span>It's a great way to get outside, and what a boost to know that you're helping someone get access to fresh fruit and vegetables.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <h4><span><span><span><span><span>What's a typical day look like when you volunteer at the farm? How many different crops have you harvested? </span></span></span></span></span></h4> <p><span><span><span><span>I spend a few hours a month there, usually on a Saturday or Sunday. When you get there, you gather with the other volunteers and wait for one of the staff members to assign you a task. They take time to show you how to do it, and off you go! I've helped harvest produce like potatoes, asparagus, and sunflowers, and I've planted crops like onion and bell peppers.</span></span></span></span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-right"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/medium/public/2024-07/tractor_crop.jpg?itok=VLYsdk7W" width="560" height="496" alt="A tractor in a farm field with farm volunteers in the distance" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>O'Neill did not have any prior experience working on a farm, but she wanted to learn about growing and harvesting food. After volunteering at the organization for more than four years, she also mentors new volunteers and has started spending time with adoptable cats, too.</p> <hr /><h4><span><span><span><span><span>How did you first get started with this volunteer activity? How long have you been doing it?</span></span></span></span></span></h4> <p><span><span><span><span><span>I have always loved animals and previously worked at a doggy daycare in New Orleans. When I moved to Alexandria in 2016 for graduate school, I wanted to get back into hanging out with dogs in some capacity. I am waiting to adopt a dog until I have a fenced yard of my own, but in the meantime, I wanted the opportunity to play and cuddle with some dogs. </span></span></span></span></span></p> <h4><span><span><span><span><span>What is the time commitment?</span></span></span></span></span></h4> <p><span><span><span><span><span>At the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, volunteers must commit to at least four hours of service each month. I average 8–10 hours a month. Outside of the standard dog walking and cat cuddles, volunteers also complete the never-ending laundry and dish washing. We also work at the front desk, do field trips, assist with adoptions, etc. There are a lot of things to do, depending on what interests you! Each opportunity is preceded by training.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-right"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2024-06/kim_paul_2.jpg?itok=4CDvB4W-" width="265" height="350" alt="Kim Paul works on laundry at the animal shelter" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>It's not all playtime and dog cuddles—there is lots of laundry to do at an animal shelter. Photo provided</figcaption></figure><h4><span><span><span><span><span>What has been the most meaningful or memorable experience you’ve had in this volunteer work?</span></span></span></span></span></h4> <p><span><span><span><span><span>Being asked by staff to become a dog volunteer mentor was incredibly meaningful to me. I love to teach and mentor people, so I am grateful that I can elevate my time at the shelter in an even more meaningful way. </span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>I also love when I come to the shelter and see all the “I’ve been adopted” signs, meaning that these precious fur babies are finding their forever homes. </span></span></span></span></span></p> <h4><span><span><span><span><span>What lessons have you learned through this experience?</span></span></span></span></span></h4> <p><span><span><span><span><span>I have learned not to personalize interactions with shelter animals too much and not to take any sad emotions home. People often ask me if it is hard to not adopt every animal I work with, and to be honest, that was one of my biggest hesitancies before signing up to become a volunteer. Fortunately, I can separate shelter and personal time and not become emotionally attached to the animals—that is the biggest hurdle to overcome. Otherwise, I would have a house full of fur, and the shelter would be empty!</span></span></span></span></span></p> <h4><span><span><span><span><span>What else do you enjoy doing in your spare time?</span></span></span></span></span></h4> <p><span><span><span><span><span>I love acting and have been soaking in the spotlight with community theatre. I have been doing theatre since I was a kid, all through college, and even did professional theatre when I lived in New Orleans.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>I love going for long walks and listening to thrillers, suspense, and mystery audiobooks. I also enjoy spending time with friends and their pets, going on adventures to places I have never been, and new dining or social experiences. I recently went to Busch Gardens for the first time and went on many roller coasters that scared me, but what a thrill it was! I am trying to push myself further and take in new experiences while I have the energy.</span></span></span></span></p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="509c7001-dd6f-4d61-bd22-7bdc583f4bd8"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="/taxonomy/term/206"> <h4 class="cta__title">Read more faculty and staff news <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="e46247dc-d407-4225-9403-643f58646201" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>More Like This</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-4b70b286da0a8d19862edafdbbe923023d7ca1f101575f4003a746aaaf1f5cea"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"><li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-07/clock-volunteering-community-farm-carissa-oneill-good-seed" hreflang="en">Off the Clock: Volunteering at a community farm, Carissa O’Neill is a good seed</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">July 19, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-06/clock-kim-paul-makes-doggone-difference-animal-shelter" hreflang="en">Off the Clock: Kim Paul makes a doggone difference at the animal shelter</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">June 28, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-06/meet-mason-nation-mihee-cho" hreflang="en">Meet the Mason Nation: Mihee Cho</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">June 19, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-04/meet-mason-nation-kevin-brim" hreflang="en">Meet the Mason Nation: Kevin Brim</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">April 26, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-03/clock-survivor-evan-cantwell-volunteers-colorectal-cancer-awareness" hreflang="en">Off the Clock: As a survivor, Evan Cantwell volunteers for colorectal cancer awareness</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">March 29, 2024</div></div></li> </ul></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/17041" hreflang="en">Off the Clock</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/206" hreflang="en">Faculty and Staff News</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/17211" hreflang="en">Volunteerism</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/456" hreflang="en">Around Mason (E-Files)</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> </div> <div> </div> </div> Thu, 27 Jun 2024 14:35:51 +0000 Lauren Reuscher 112681 at Meet the Mason Nation: Mihee Cho /news/2024-06/meet-mason-nation-mihee-cho <span>Meet the Mason Nation: Mihee Cho</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/231" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" xml:lang="">Colleen Rich</span></span> <span>Thu, 06/20/2024 - In June 2015, just one year after the campus opened, she started working as an administrative assistant in the Office of Academic and Student Affairs. Currently, Cho serves as the assistant manager of student involvement and leadership development in Mason Korea’s University Life Office, managing its daily operations and programming for students. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span>Time overseas.</span></strong><span> “My interest in working higher education sparked during my time as an international student in the United States,” said Cho. She earned a master’s degree in educational technology from Missouri State.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span>Home away from home. </span></strong><span>Joining a campus community as an international student gave Cho a unique perspective. “Being part of the campus community, both receiving assistance and offering support to fellow international students, was incredibly rewarding,” said Cho. “I discovered the value of creating a welcoming and supportive environment for students adjusting to life abroad.”</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span>Paying it forward. </span></strong><span>Cho saw the opportunity to work at Mason Korea as a chance to share the knowledge and experiences she had gained as an international student. "I wanted to create a similar supportive atmosphere for students at Mason Korea, helping them navigate the challenges of studying in a new country and encouraging their involvement in campus life,” said Cho.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>As of April 2024, approximately 1,000 undergraduate <a>students</a> study at Mason Korea, and 40% of them live on campus. Brim moved to the waste/recycle team in 2011, </span></span></span><span><span>learning every aspect of the operation from the ground up. That knowledge and experience led him to his current role as the supervisor of that team.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span>Spreading the word.</span></span></span></strong><span><span><span> Brim takes pride in his team and how they help foster a culture of sustainability at Mason. “I ensure my team knows just as much as I do about waste and recycling here at Mason,” Brim said. His team’s interactions with others on campus help inform the community about the proper disposal of different items, protecting Mason’s recycling and composting streams. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <figure class="quote"><span><span><span><span><span><span>It all comes back to serving George Mason students, according to Brim. </span></span></span><span><span>“Students are the reason we are here, so they’re our target audience,” said Brim. “I’m always interested in hearing their input on what we can do better, or what they would like to see.”</span></span></span></span></span></figure><p><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Harnessing the sun. </span></span></strong><a href="https://green.gmu.edu/campus-sustainability/zero-waste/composting/"><span><span>Expanded composting access</span></span></a><span><span> is part of a long-term strategy to improve George Mason’s waste diversion rate. </span></span><span><span><span>Brim’s team recently installed new </span></span></span><a href="/news/2024-02/dont-trash-it-compost-it-mason-facilities-adds-23-bigbelly-zero-waste-stations"><span><span>Bigbelly zero waste stations</span></span></a><span><span><span> on the Fairfax and Mason Square campuses, some of which include </span></span></span><span><span>solar-powered, waste compacting compost bins. These composting streams are often easier to control, ensuring a clean composting product.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span><span>The glass is half full. </span></span></strong><span><span>This spring, George Mason launched a glass recycling program, with purple recycling trailers parked on the Fairfax Campus. Relaxing in the backyard tops the list, too. “It’s the little things in life,” Brim said.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <hr /><p><span><span><span><em><span><span>Can I recycle
