Despite the vast number of people needing rehabilitation, only 36% of these patients complete their plans of care and achieve maximum results. Virtual reality has proven to be more effective at improving gait and balance in stroke and rehabilitation patients when compared to traditional therapy. VR also is considered to be more exciting and engaging for patients. While some virtual reality rehabilitation tools currently exist, they are often inaccessible due to size, cost, and complexity. Therefore, our goal is to create a portable, inexpensive, and engaging virtual reality lower-limb rehabilitation platform that can be set up in a range of locations and used by patients in their own homes to regain mobility, muscular strength, and balance.聽</p> <h2>What inspired you to select this topic?</h2> <p>As a team, we talked about our interests, strengths and weaknesses, and passions, and settled on this project. We all had a strong background in coding, and we loved the idea of using code and virtual reality in a way that would improve patient outcomes. Through our interviews with rehabilitation patients and physical therapists, we were inspired by the need to make rehabilitation more engaging.</p> <h2>What has been your greatest success thus far?</h2> <p>Our greatest success so far has been leveraging clinical information to engineer critical aspects of our virtual reality rehabilitation platform. Through interviews with a diverse group, including physical therapists and patients undergoing physical therapy for lower limb rehabilitation, we gathered invaluable insights. The information encompasses aspects such as initial patient assessments, patient monitoring metrics, exercise efficacy, range of motion requirements, patient engagement strategies, and challenges faced in physical therapy. Armed with this comprehensive data, we enhanced the design of virtual environments and refined the overall design, marking a pivotal success in our project.</p> <h2>What is one thing you鈥檝e learned while working on this project that will be useful to you in the field?</h2> <p>One significant takeaway from working on this project is the importance of brainstorming and prototyping. We started with five different designs and continued to test to narrow down our options to one design that met all our requirements. In addition, we valued feedback from experts who have used this technology as it helps us understand the strengths and weaknesses that we should address in our project. This will be very useful in the bioengineering field since it requires lots of testing and prototyping to ensure that our product meets the specific user needs of our stakeholders.聽</p> <h2>How would dedicated research space, such as the plans for Fuse at Mason Square, help sustain your project?</h2> <p>Finding a space large enough to base our project and one that was secure and quiet enough to allow for an optimal development environment was one of our great challenges. We have repurposed a room that was intended for storage space. A dedicated research space would equip us with all the tools we truly need to have a successful final design, as well as a testing space. With Fuse at Mason Square in particular, the fact that it has been purpose-built for research and will provide a space for all departments to come together is very exciting. For instance, once we have developed our device, we could collaborate with kinesiology or Psychology Department researchers to conduct studies where we test the viability of our product and improve it further. Then, we could collaborate with the Costello College of Business on the possibility of bringing our product to market.</p> <figure role="group"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/extra_large_content_image/public/2024-02/in_copy_fuse_vr.jpg?itok=tXMBv2Wq" width="1000" height="667" alt="Students sit behind two laptops and sketches showcasing their work" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>The capstone group poses with their project designs. hobbyist operations, but pose a serious security risk to various defense and state installations (such as airports and military bases). While sensors can provide detection and tracking information for UAVs, it is vital to infer any potential malicious intent of the UAV so that counter measures can be put in place in a timely manner. 聽</p> <p>Our project focuses on predicting the state and intent of UAVs from uncertain sensing data. This work shows how an inference engine for UAV state-estimation and intent can be built by exploiting sensing and tracking data from a multisensor installation, using state-of-the-art, high-level information fusion and systems engineering tools. We are applying model-based systems engineering techniques to simulate multisensor fusion and determine a UAV鈥檚 (specifically drones) movement and behavior.聽</p> <h2>What inspired you to select this topic?聽</h2> <p>We were introduced to the project by our former professor Raz and decided to work on it as we are both interested in aerospace.聽</p> <h2>What has been your greatest success thus far?聽</h2> <p>We have been able to develop multiples models and scenarios simulating both drones and real-world use cases of drone tracking such as a radar installment at an airport.聽</p> <h2>What is one thing you鈥檝e learned while working on this project that will be useful to you in the field?聽</h2> <p>We have developed our knowledge and ability to apply model-based systems engineering (SysML), as well as building simulations in MATLAB. Our research is focused on using the tools of micro- and nanotechnology for applications in biomaterials and tissue engineering. The goal of current research is to design implants that induce controlled, guided, and rapid healing in cardiovascular implants such as stents and heart valves; and orthopedic implants such as hip and knee joint implants. In addition to the acceleration of normal wound healing phenomena, these implants should result in the formation of a characteristic interfacial layer with adequate biomechanical properties.</p> <p>To achieve these goals, however, a better understanding of events at the tissue-material interface is needed, as well as the development of new materials and approaches that promote biointegration. Our work proposes the use of well-controlled nanostructured interfaces to enhance implant integration. We hypothesize that controlled biomimetic nanoscale architectures can promote cell differentiation and matrix production and enhance short-term and long-term integration. Moreover, the ability to create model nano-dimensional constructs that mimic physiological systems can aid in studying complex tissue interactions in terms of cell communication, response to matrix geometry, and effect of external chemical stimuli. By understanding how physical surface parameters influence cells, we can more effectively design material surfaces that can be used in a clinical setting.</p> <h3>Research</h3> <ul><li>Titanium Nanomaterials for Orthopedic Implants</li> <li>Blood-Contacting Biomaterials for Cardiovascular Medical Devices</li> <li>Superhydrophobic and Superhydrophilic Surfaces for Blood-Contacting Materials</li> <li>Polymeric Nanostructured Surfaces for Tissue Engineering Applications聽</li> <li>Novel Alloys and Surface Treatments or Implants Applications</li> </ul><h3>Degrees</h3> <ul><li><strong>PhD, Bioengineering, </strong>University of Illinois at Chicago (2003)</li> <li><strong>MEng, Chemical Engineering,</strong> Illinois Institute of Technology (2000)</li> <li><strong>BEng, Chemical Engineering,</strong> Maharaja Sayajirao University (1998)</li> </ul><h3>Publications</h3> <p><a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=HU1Qt5EAAAAJ&hl=en">Google Scholar</a></p> </div> </div> </div> </div> Tue, 09 Jan 2024 17:49:38 +0000 Tama Moni 113861 at Ethan Ahn /profiles/eahn7 <span>Ethan Ahn</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/1011" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" xml:lang="">Tama Moni</span></span> <span>Thu, 08/03/2023 - 16:14</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:profile:field_headshot" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodeprofilefield-headshot"> <div class="field field--name-field-headshot field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/2023-08/Ethan-C-Ahn-profile.jpg" width="500" height="500" alt="Computer Science Associate Professor Ethan Ahn" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:profile:field_org_positions" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodeprofilefield-org-positions"> <div class="field field--name-field-org-positions field--type-text-long field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Titles and Organizations</div> <div class="field__item"><p>Associate Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering</p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:profile:field_contact_information" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodeprofilefield-contact-information"> <h2>Contact Information</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-contact-information field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p><strong>Building:</strong> Nguyen Engineering<br /><strong>Email:</strong> <a href="mailto:eahn7@gmu.edu" title="Ethan Ahn email">eahn7@gmu.edu</a></p> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:profile:field_personal_websites" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodeprofilefield-personal-websites"> <h2>Personal Websites</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-personal-websites field--type-link field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field field--name-field-personal-websites field--type-link field--label-hidden field__item"><a href="https://masonnano.wixsite.com/ethanahn">Mason Nanoelectronics Lab</a></div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="a368831e-7622-4d7f-b6f9-86f16ee77067" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>In the News</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-eb6ed4ae1d9607e021d7b24943e54b32c4cd2920deb5a638b25bdfccbe44262a"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"><li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-01/new-mason-nanofabrication-facility-will-help-drive-innovation-commonwealth" hreflang="en">New Mason Nanofabrication Facility will help drive innovation in the commonwealth</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">January 17, 2024</div></div></li> </ul></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:profile:field_bio" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodeprofilefield-bio"> <h2>Biography</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-bio field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Ethan Ahn is currently an associate professor of Electrical Engineering (EE) at 亚洲AV.
