George Mason staff are preparing to complete their self-evaluations and the performance evaluation process. Current and aspiring supervisors are invited to join the University Life Supervision Collective for a virtual manager meetup on Thursday, Feb. 27, from 2–3 p.m.

In its third installment of the season, the Mason Symphony Orchestra, led by Soo Han, is excited to launch the spring semester with Water Sings Fire by George Mason's own Director of Composition Andrea Reinkemeyer. This concert will also feature two of the 2025 Mason Concerto Competition winners: Jennifer Szabo (flute), performing the first movement of Mozart's Flute Concerto in G Major, and Annie French (soprano), performing "V'adoro, pupille" from Handel's Giulio Cesare. The evening will conclude with Respighi's thrilling Pines of Rome, featuring members of The Green Machine.

��AV alum (Doctor of Musical Arts ‘21), Dewberry School of Music professor, and recipient of a Young Alumni Commissioning Award (’23), Juan Megna showcases musical influences from across the Americas with the Juan Megna Trio. The Argentinian-born percussionist/drummer studied music at the State University of Campinas in São Paulo, Brazil, before continuing his musical and educational odyssey in the United States. At George Mason, he leads the School of Music Latin American Ensemble. The Juan Megna Trio will perform a mix of Megna’s original compositions, blended jazz, Argentinian and Afro-Brazilian rhythms.

President's Town Hall Sessions with Faculty/Staff

��AV President Gregory Washington will host two 90-minute town hall sessions to discuss the state of the university and to engage with faculty and staff.

The first town hall, for faculty and staff working in academic units, will take place on Wednesday, March 19, at 9 a.m., on the Fairfax Campus, The Hub, Ballroom.
The second town hall, for employees working in nonacademic units, will take place on Tuesday, March 25, at 1:30 p.m., on the Fairfax Campus, The Hub, Ballroom.

Harvard COACHE Faculty Satisfaction Survey

This spring, full-time ��AV faculty can once again make their voices heard by participating in the Collaboration on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) Faculty Satisfaction Survey, a national survey designed specifically to understand the job satisfaction of instructional and research faculty. The survey launched in early February and will be open until early April. Faculty were emailed a unique link to the survey. Learn more.

Final Call for Outstanding Achievement Award Nominations: Submit by Feb. 21

Time is running out to nominate outstanding faculty and staff for the 2025 Outstanding Achievement Awards. With new categories this year—like the Rising Star Award, Wage Employee Service Award, and Campus Culture Champion—there are even more opportunities to recognize the hard work and dedication of your colleagues.

Nominations for the Jack Wood Award for Town-Gown Relations

The Jack Wood Award highlights the outstanding contributions of faculty, staff, students, businesses/not-for-profits, community members, and elected officials/staff who demonstrate leadership in fostering mutually beneficial relationships between the university and the community.

This distinction honors former Mayor Jack Wood, who played an instrumental role in establishing George Mason in the City of Fairfax and establishing town-gown relations between the university and the community.

Nominations are due March 19. Self-nominations are welcome. Community relations/outreach professionals are not eligible. Awardees will be notified by April 1, and the Board of Visitors will honor awardees on May 1. Questions? Contact Traci Kendall.

Spring Career Fair

Students and alumni are encouraged to attend the Spring Career Fair on Feb. 18, 19, and 20. Participants can network with employers, gain insight from alums, find part-time gigs, internships, and full-time jobs. This three-day event will host more than 50 employers each day, seeking to fill job vacancies. The fair will happen on the Fairfax Campus in the Johnson Center, lower level.

Each day of the fair will have its own focus: Tuesday is STEM, Wednesday covers all interests, and Thursday is business, government, and nonprofits. Learn more.

The Eaterie is Now Open

The Eaterie, a new dining venue on the Fairfax Campus in Student Union I (SUB I), is now open. This location features seven stations, including an expanded kosher station—the first certified Kosher Kitchen in Virginia. Committed to sustainability, The Eaterie will use reusable containers and source 80% of its items locally. Customers are encouraged to sign up for the ReusePass program to participate in The Eaterie’s waste-free dining initiative. Payment options include card, cash, Dining Dollars, Swipes, and Mason Money.

New Student Strengths Coaching Program

The Center for the Advancement of Well-Being announces the launch of the Student Strengths Coaching program, which will build a collaborative team of students from across George Mason to be trained and hired as paid Strengths Coaches.

Southside Dining is officially a Certified Green Restaurant®, recognized by the Green Restaurant Association for its commitment to sustainability. Restaurants generate more than 300 million tons of garbage every year, but Southside is working to reduce waste through recycling, water efficiency, and sustainable food practices. Thrive at Mason Boot Camp: Call for Workshop Proposals

This year's Thrive at Mason boot camp is dedicated to fostering a growth mindset as we navigate an evolving landscape. This theme aims to inspire resilience, adaptability, and innovative thinking for personal and professional development. Faculty and staff are invited to submit creative and engaging workshop proposals. These contributions will play a pivotal role in encouraging the George Mason community to embrace the power of a growth mindset.

Proposals should be submitted through the online form by Friday, Feb. 21, at 5 p.m. All submitters will receive notification of their proposal status by Friday, March 7. For questions, contact Daniel Labriola, Fiscal Services.

Suicide Prevention Training for Students, Faculty, and Staff

SOS (Signs of Suicide) for Higher Ed is a suicide prevention training program, which includes two 30-minute, self-guided, online training courses for students, faculty, and staff.

The trainings provide video and interactive learning to teach everyone on campus how to ACT (Acknowledge, Care, Tell) in their role in suicide prevention. SOS for Higher Ed uses real and diverse stories of mental health struggles and recovery, along with modeled scenarios, to provide all learners with actionable steps to help someone in need.

Members of the George Mason community are encouraged to participate and learn:

How to recognize signs of suicide risk
How to have caring conversations that encourage someone to seek help
How to build community connections that foster positive mental well-being
An overview of available student mental health resources, on and off campus

Institute for Immigration Research: Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Vietnamese Boat People

Join the Institute for Immigration Research on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 7–8:30 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus, Merten Hall, Room 1201, for an evening commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Vietnamese Boat People. From 1975 to 1992, almost two million Vietnamese risked their lives to flee oppression and hardship after the Vietnam War. Escaping by boat, many were captured or did not survive the journey, found freedom in other countries, or were resettled in refugee camps.

The event will include a discussion of the Vietnamese Boat People resettlement experience, a viewing of the Closing the Gap documentary, a conversation on the current state of refugees around the world and in the United States, and an art and book display. The evening event will follow afternoon panels with online speakers. Learn more and RSVP.

Named “Los Angeles’ Best Dance Troupe for Hip Hop Empowerment” by LA Weekly, Versa-Style Street Dance Company immerses its audience in the electrifying world of hip hop and street dance culture. To mark its 20th anniversary, the troupe presents Rooted Rhythms, a mixed repertory program of its most popular works, paying homage to street dance styles such as whacking, popping, and house dance, as well as a blend of Afro-Latin styles including salsa and West African. The Acting Company: August Wilson’s Two Trains Running

The Acting Company returns with August Wilson’s Tony Award-winning play. Set amid the Civil Rights Movement, the drama centers on Memphis Lee, an African American diner owner whose business is set to be demolished for an urban renewal project. While Lee fights for fairness and dignity, his customers struggle with how gentrification is changing their lives in unpredictable ways. Two Trains Running is a poignant tribute to the spirit and perseverance of the people who make our country great even when faced with overwhelming odds.

How C-SPAN Changed Our World

University Libraries’ Special Collections Research Center is home to the C-SPAN records archives. James Buchanan and Vernon Smith Seminar

SOS (Signs of Suicide) for Higher Ed is a suicide prevention training program, which includes two 30-minute, self-guided, online training courses for students, faculty, and staff.

Expectations Unlocked: Developing Your Supervisor User Manual for Team Clarity

Register for a dynamic in-person workshop, scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 1–2 p.m., designed to empower supervisors to effectively communicate their expectations to team members.

First offered at last year’s Faculty and Staff Enrichment Day, participants will learn how to develop a personalized user manual that outlines their leadership style, preferred communication methods, and performance expectations. Key takeaways will include a customizable template, actionable tips for implementing it within their teams, and insights on enhancing employee engagement and accountability.

By the end of the workshop, supervisors will be equipped with the tools needed to create their own user manual guide for their employees. Register.

Spring 2025 Safe Zone+ Program

Registration is now open for Safe Zone+ workshops during the spring semester. The Safe Zone+ Program aims to create a safer, more welcoming and inclusive campus environment toward the goal of supporting the well-being of LGBTQ people. All are welcome to attend, and all workshops are being offered virtually. Register.

The "High-Performing" Rating Returns

Over the next two weeks, George Mason’s annual performance evaluation guidance website will be updated to reflect upcoming enhancements to the annual evaluation process, which will launch Friday, Feb. 17.

The most notable enhancement is the return of the “high-performing” rating. This rating has not been included the past two evaluation years. Based on feedback, evaluation process data and metrics, and a strategic goal of fostering an engaging performance management experience, the university will return to a five-point rating scale for administrative/professional faculty and classified staff. Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Vietnamese Boat People

Join the Institute for Immigration Research on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 7–8:30 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus, Merten Hall, Room 1201, for an evening commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Vietnamese Boat People. From 1975–1992, almost two million Vietnamese risked their lives to flee oppression and hardship after the Vietnam War. Escaping by boat, many were captured or did not survive the journey, found freedom in other countries, or were resettled in refugee camps.

The event will include a discussion of the Vietnamese Boat People resettlement experience, a viewing of the Closing the Gap documentary, a conversation on the current state of refugees around the world and in the United States, and an art and book display. The evening event will follow afternoon panels with online speakers. Learn more and RSVP.

This exhibition examines the book, Nothing Personal (1964), a collaborative artwork in book form by two legendary American artists, James Baldwin and Richard Avedon. As we celebrate the 100th year since James Baldwin’s birth, and mark 60 years since the first publication of Nothing Personal, we continue to ask the same questions that Baldwin and Avedon were posing in 1964.

Virginia Opera: The Constitution and Loving v. Virginia

In support of Virginia Opera’s world premiere production of Loving v. Virginia, this legal panel discusses the origins, challenges, and significance of the 1967 Supreme Court ruling that struck down state laws banning marriage between individuals of different races. Panel participants will include Mary Bauer, executive director of ACLU-VA, as well as other constitutional scholars, active attorneys and/or judges, and experts. Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis joins the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra in this special concert. Dylan Triplett is a blues and soul prodigy from St. Louis, Missouri, and was raised in a musical family. He began singing at age 9 and has been performing professionally since late 2016. His rise in the industry recently earned him the 2023 Blues Music Award for Best Emerging Artist Album presented by the Blues Foundation and the 2023 Blues Blast Award.

Support for Duo Mobile Application on iOS 15 Ending

Duo Security, George Mason’s provider for 2FA, has announced it will end support for the Duo Mobile application on iOS 15 effective Monday, Feb. 17, 2025. Users with this operating system have been notified about the change. This change means users will not be able to troubleshoot issues or receive maintenance fixes or security updates on devices running iOS 15 and lower; however, users can still authenticate and receive passcodes.

To receive full support, users should upgrade to iOS 16 or later. For assistance, contact the ITS Support Center at 703-993-8870 or submit a request ticket.

Facilitating Inclusive Practices: Become an ASPIRE facilitator

The Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion seeks to equip George Mason faculty and staff with the tools and knowledge to lead impactful workshops that foster inclusive workplace environments. Faculty and staff are invited to receive training and become facilitators for the ASPIRE workshops. Through two half-day sessions in March 2025, faculty and staff will gain a strong understanding of the ASPIRE workshop content, key principles of learner-centered approaches, and effective strategies for engaging participants.

New facilitators will receive personalized mentorship throughout their first few sessions, ensuring they feel confident and well-prepared as they take on their facilitation roles. Call for Proposals—Reclaiming History: Islam and Cultural Patrimony in the 21st Century

For its annual conference, the AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic Studies at George Mason is calling for papers to address the phenomenon of cultural destruction with an eye to understanding the nature of such loss in places such as, but not limited to Afghanistan, Bosnia, China, Gaza, India, Iraq, Lebanon, Mali, Myanmar, the Palestinian Territories, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, as well those efforts to redress the crimes of looting and to restore cultural patrimony as an act of reconciliation. Virginia Opera: The Constitution and Loving v. Virginia

In support of Virginia Opera’s world premiere production of Loving v. Virginia, this legal panel discusses the origins, challenges, and significance of the 1967 Supreme Court ruling that struck down state laws banning marriage between individuals of different races. Panel participants will include Mary Bauer, executive director of ACLU-VA, as well as other constitutional scholars, active attorneys and/or judges, and experts. A brief Q & A session will follow the discussion. This event is co-presented by the City of Fairfax and Center for the Arts at ��AV and offered in conjunction with the Center for the Arts at ��AV’s May 3–4 performances of the world premiere opera.

Parking Permit Sales for Spring 2025 Semester

Spring semester parking permits are available for purchase online via the Parking Portal. Learn more about parking options and rates. Note: Faculty and staff enrolled in payroll deduction for their parking permits do not need to take any action.

As a reminder, most parking permits are virtual permits. Permit holders will not be issued or mailed physical hangtag permits. Your license plate serves as your permit, and your permit will be valid once purchased.

Follow the instructions to add and change the vehicles associated with your parking permit. Note: your license plate must be associated with your permit, not just your parking account. For questions, contact Parking Services at 703-993-2710 or parking@gmu.edu.

Annual Leave Rollover Reminder: Jan. 9 Deadline

As we approach the end of the leave year, faculty and staff are reminded that the annual leave carryover limit will be rolled over on Thursday, Jan. 9. Employees with leave balances exceeding the carryover limit must use their excess leave before Jan. 9 to avoid losing it. Coordinate time off with supervisors.

Campus Updates

Winter Graduation is Dec. 18–19

George Mason will celebrate its newest graduates at Commencement and Degree Celebrations on Wednesday, Dec. 18, and Thursday, Dec. 19, at EagleBank Arena. Tickets are required. Expect increased traffic on and around the Fairfax Campus during graduation festivities, particularly during Commencement, which takes place on Thursday, Dec. 19, at 9:30 a.m. Contact University Events with questions.

University Winter Break Lockdown

The university will be closed for winter break from Monday, Dec. 23, at 6 a.m. through Monday, Jan. 6, 2025, at 6 a.m. However, some employees and students may require entry for special projects into buildings without electronic access. Therefore, pre-planned access for nonelectronic lock buildings can be coordinated in advance via the Winter Break Building Access Form found on the Mason Police website. Failure to coordinate with Mason Police in advance may result in being denied access. For questions on building card access, email caso@gmu.edu.

West Campus Town Hall: Watch the Recording

George Mason recently hosted a community conversation regarding the university’s West Campus development. Community members were invited to share their thoughts and ideas regarding concepts for the development, campus and community needs, and opportunities for collaboration. Holiday Break Reminders from Information Technology Services

Information Technology Services (ITS) reminds ��AV faculty, staff, and students to stay vigilant during the holidays and take precautions before leaving for winter break. Cybercriminals step up efforts to steal from people during the holidays. Be wary of emails from strangers, and do not share login information or Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) codes.

Also, before leaving for break, log off all systems and turn off non-essential devices in offices and on-campus residences. Additional information about precautions to take during the holiday and before leaving for the break is available on the ITS website.

Staff Senate Holiday Donation Drive

Every holiday season, the Staff Senate supports a donation drive to benefit local organizations. For the 2024 holiday season, the Staff Senate is encouraging the Mason community to support four organizations:

Food and toiletry contributions to the Patriot Pantry, which provides access to food and hygiene items to the George Mason community.
Donations of toys and supplies to Inova Children’s Hospital.
If you love the dogs and cats of our local community, support Lucky Dog Animal Rescue in Arlington, Virginia.

Parking Services Donation Drive: Receive Credit toward a Parking Citation

Make a donation of nonperishable food or personal hygiene items to benefit the Patriot Pantry at any Parking Services office and receive a $15, $20, or $30 credit toward an outstanding parking citation. The AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic Studies at George Mason is calling for papers to address the phenomenon of cultural destruction with an eye to understanding the nature of such loss in places such as, but not limited to Afghanistan, Bosnia, China, Gaza, India, Iraq, Lebanon, Mali, Myanmar, the Palestinian Territories, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, as well those efforts to redress the crimes of looting and to restore cultural patrimony as an act of reconciliation. Annual Leave Rollover Reminder: Jan. 9 Deadline

As we approach the end of the leave year, faculty and staff are reminded that the annual leave carryover limit will be rolled over on Jan. 9, 2025. Employees with leave balances exceeding the carryover limit must use their excess leave before Jan. 9, 2025, to avoid losing it. Plan ahead and coordinate time off with supervisors.

45th International Saxophone Symposium

The 45th International Saxophone Symposium, hosted by the U.S. Navy Band, features more than 150 performances, masterclasses and lectures designed for musicians of all ages. The International Saxophone Symposium features world-renowned saxophonists, while highlighting the prominence of the saxophone in both classical and jazz literature. Friday night's concert presents the U.S. Navy Concert Band with a mixture of band pieces and classically oriented saxophone solos. Featured soloists will include Makoto Hondo, ~Nois, and Musician First Class Harrison Clarke. This event is open to the public, and no tickets are required.

Silkroad Ensemble
Saturday, Jan. 25, at 8 p.m.
Fairfax Campus, Center for the Arts
Returning for a third year as a Mason Artist-in-Residence, Grammy Award-winning music collective Silkroad Ensemble presents this world premiere showcase of all-star percussionists and musical storytelling through the exchange of rhythm, pulse, and melody from different musical traditions around the world. Formed by Yo-Yo Ma and now led by Pulitzer Prize winning multi-instrumentalist Rhiannon Giddens, Silkroad Ensemble will engage the community and students during its residency through a variety of events, classes, and discussions.
