Question:

The Fairfax Campus officially opened 60 years ago on Sept. 14, 1964. It consisted of four small buildings, named North, South, East, and West. What amenity did these buildings offer, unlike any other college in the Washington, D.C., area at the time?

Answer:

When the Fairfax Campus opened its doors in September 1964, it was the only college in the capital region with buildings that were fully air-conditioned.

Though the temperatures were comfortable inside, some amenities still needed to be added to the campus buildings. Food service was not available at first, but efforts were quickly made to address that. During the first week of classes, vending machines were hastily set up in a study hall. George Mason would later set up a dining hall, the Ordinary, in the South Building (now called Krug Hall). The Ordinary was open until the University Union, now known as Student Union Building I, was built in 1974.

When the Fairfax Campus first opened, it welcomed 356 registered students, and the faculty included seven full-time and 18 part-time instructors. The first buildings still form the original quad as Finley, Krug, East, and West.

The Spot Expands Its Hours, by Popular Demand
Last fall, in response to the George Mason community’s growing demand for plant-based dining, Mason Dining introduced The Spot: Where Plants Power You. This vibrant dining venue offers a diverse menu of vegan and vegetarian options, showcasing the versatility of plant-based ingredients. Due to its success and student requests, The Spot will now extend dinner hours from Monday to Thursday until 7 p.m., providing more opportunities to enjoy its innovative, plant-powered dishes in a welcoming community space.

Free Shake Day at Shake Smart
Mason Dining is excited to announce the grand opening of Shake Smart, a new smoothie and shake concept in Fenwick Library, designed for busy college students. Founded by two college students, Shake Smart offers a balanced, protein-focused menu that fits seamlessly into active lifestyles. Shake Smart will host a Free Shake Day on Thursday, Sept. 12, with complimentary shakes for all. This location supports George Mason’s commitment to providing nutritious dining options on campus. Tony and Olivier Award-winning singer and actress Lea Salonga headlines the 2024 ARTS by George! benefit concert performing songs she has made famous throughout her extraordinary four-decade career on Broadway and in animated movie blockbusters. Born in the Philippines, Salonga originated the lead role of Kim in the West End and Broadway productions of Miss Saigon, and she was the first Asian cast member to perform the role of Eponine in Les Misérables on Broadway. Recognized by fans of all ages as the singing voice for two animated Disney princesses—Jasmine in Aladdin and Fa Mulan in Mulan—Salonga was named a “Disney Legend” by the Walt Disney Company in 2011.

Encanto: The Sing-Along Film Concert will include all the music of the Academy Award-winning film, including iconic hits like “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and “Surface Pressure.” Fans are encouraged to dress up as Mirabel, Luisa, Isabela, or any of their favorite characters from the film and to use their voices to transform the Hylton Center’s Merchant Hall into one big celebration of the Madrigal family.

Erinys Quartet

Though named after the Furies from Aeschylus’s The Oresteia, the Erinys Quartet aims to captivate with heavenly string music. Comprising violinists Elizabeth Stewart and Joosep Reimaa, violist Marja Räisänen, and cellist Stergios Theodoridis, the ensemble formed at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. They are currently the quartet in residence in the Nina von Maltzahn String Quartet program at the Curtis Institute of Music. The ensemble will perform Bartók's String Quartet No. 3, Sz. 85 and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 12, Op 127.

The classic vampire tale Dracula opens Manassas Ballet Theatre’s season with this chilling and bloodcurdling production. Be transported to Transylvania with Dracula’s quest for eternal life and love leading the way. The original score by Kim Reynolds is performed by The Kim Reynolds Band and will draw you into this chilling and sensual performance.

Over the years, choreographer Mark Morris has created more than 150 dance works that have earned him the title of “the most successful and influential choreographer alive, and indisputably the most musical” (New York Times). This program features audience favorites and rare gems, including Pacific (1995), “a beautiful, contemplative piece” (Dancetabs), set to music of Lou Harrison; Going Away Party (1990), which Critical Dance dubbed "thoroughly enjoyable, a little risqué and laugh-out-loud funny at times;” Rock of Ages (2004), set to music by Franz Schubert; and Castor and Pollux (1980).

New Traffic Pattern at Prince William Parkway and University Boulevard

New Procedures for Trash Collection and Cleaning in Campus Offices

��AV is implementing new procedures for trash collection and cleaning in campus offices. These changes support the university's efforts to increase efficiency and cut costs. These changes went into effect on Aug. 1 in university offices at the Fairfax, Mason Square, and Science and Technology campuses:

Faculty and staff are responsible for emptying the individual trash can in their workspace into larger trash receptacles in common areas. Housekeeping staff will no longer empty personal trash cans located at desks/cubicles/private offices.
Workspaces/offices will be cleaned weekly.

Common spaces and high traffic areas will be cleaned daily, and trash will be removed from common area trash receptacles at least once daily. The cleaning schedule will not change in restrooms, kitchens, and common areas.

These changes are being implemented after a pilot program was conducted on the SciTech Campus and in Merten Hall on the Fairfax Campus during the 2023–24 academic year. Read more about the changes.

Exhibit: ‘RE(FORM)ER’ at Fenwick Library
In RE(FORM)ER, Jorge Bañales (MFA Visual and Performing Arts ‘21) and Steven Luu, current master's student in visual and performing arts, methodically deconstruct and reconstruct carriers of meaning: photographs, film negatives, experimental video, sculptures, and more. Working with found or discarded materials, the artists maintain an intense focus on process to develop ideas around memory, mnemonics, and materiality. RE(FORM)ER is on view on the Fairfax Campus in Fenwick Gallery through Nov. 16. An opening reception will be hosted on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 5–7 p.m. RSVP.

New Procedures for Trash Collection and Cleaning in Campus Offices

Faculty and staff are responsible for emptying the individual trash can in their workspace into larger trash receptacles in common areas. Housekeeping staff will no longer empty personal trash cans located at desks/cubicles/private offices.
Workspaces/offices will be cleaned weekly.

These changes are being implemented after a pilot program was conducted on the SciTech Campus and in Merten Hall on the Fairfax Campus during the 2023–24 academic year. Read more about the changes.

Exhibit: ‘RE(FORM)ER’ at Fenwick Library

In RE(FORM)ER, Jorge Bañales (MFA Visual and Performing Arts ‘21) and Steven Luu, current master's student in visual and performing arts, methodically deconstruct and reconstruct carriers of meaning: photographs, film negatives, experimental video, sculptures, and more. Working with found or discarded materials, the artists maintain an intense focus on process to develop ideas around memory, mnemonics, and materiality.

RE(FORM)ER is on view on the Fairfax Campus in Fenwick Gallery through Nov. 16. An opening reception will be hosted on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 5–7 p.m. RSVP.

The Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Impact invites students, faculty, and staff to attend the "NASA, Earth, and Space" event on Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 1–2:30 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus in the Johnson Center Cinema.

Jack Kaye, NASA's associate director for research in the Earth Science Division, will discuss current space exploration efforts and future prospects. Following his talk, a panel of George Mason faculty, including Anamaria Berea, Liping Di, Jim Kinter, and Peter Plavchan, will present their NASA-funded research, share outcomes, and explore collaboration and funding opportunities. Born in the Philippines, Salonga originated the lead role of Kim in the West End and Broadway productions of Miss Saigon, and she was the first Asian cast member to perform the role of Eponine in Les Misérables on Broadway. Recognized by fans of all ages as the singing voice for two animated Disney princesses—Jasmine in Aladdin and Fa Mulan in Mulan—Salonga was named a “Disney Legend” by the Walt Disney Company in 2011.

As the fall 2024 semester starts, George Mason students, faculty, and staff are reminded that traffic on and around the Fairfax Campus greatly increases during the first few weeks of the semester. The following campus parking and transportation guide will help minimize potential parking and traffic delays.

During the first few weeks of the semester, we suggest allowing an extra 30 minutes to arrive on campus. Though some parking spaces are more convenient to your destination than others, the Fairfax Campus has more than enough spaces to accommodate all vehicles. However, many general parking permit areas fill at peak class times. Lots L and K are usually the last to fill and the best places to look if arriving to campus after 10 a.m. with a general permit.

Parking Permit and Visitor Parking
A valid parking permit (virtual or hangtag) is required to park outside visitor areas. Those without permits should use visitor parking in the garages or in various lots with daily parking options. Virtual parking permits are sold online only at parking.gmu.edu. Permits are sold with daily, weekly, monthly, and semester options.

Traffic Supervision
At times during the morning, late afternoon, and early evenings, campus police cadets will direct traffic around campus. Please be alert and follow the cadets’ directions.

Share the Road
Please be mindful of sharing the road safely with an increased number of pedestrians and vehicles, including scooters, motorcycles, bikes, cars and trucks. Get more tips on safely sharing the road on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

Please never park or leave a scooter or bike on any sidewalk or blocking any pathway.

Event Parking Impacts
Campus Drive between Global Lane and Patriot Circle will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 29, from 6–11 p.m. for the IVth Night event at the RAC Field. Follow detour signs.

Shuttle Service
Check the Mason Shuttles webpage for fall semester schedules. Early in the semester, allow extra time to catch your shuttle, as buses may be full at peak times.

Mason IDs are required; no guest riders are permitted until further notice.
Every bus is outfitted with a bike rack, ADA accommodations, and Wi-Fi.
Shuttle Tracker: Get real-time arrival info for Mason Shuttles and local public transportation. Download the RideSystems app from Google Play or the App Store.

Sandy Creek–Vienna Metro Shuttle—Runs between Fairfax Campus and Vienna Metro Station with buses every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday–Friday, increasing to every 20 minutes from 4–11 p.m., and limited service on weekends from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Fairfax–Science and Technology Campus Shuttle—Connects Fairfax Campus with the SciTech Campus, operating Monday–Thursday from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., with departures every 30–40 minutes and Fridays with departures every 70 minutes. Weekend service is every two hours between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Gunston Go-Bus—Provides service between various locations including the RAC, Sandy Creek Transit Center, and Fair Oaks Mall, among others.

Fairfax/Mason Square (Arlington) Shuttle—Operates between Sandy Creek Transit Center and Van Metre/Hazel Hall, with hourly service Monday–Thursday from 7:15 a.m. to 11:05 p.m. and limited Friday service; no weekend service.

West Campus Shuttle—Runs between West Campus Parking Lot and Presidents Park, with service every 20 minutes from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday–Friday, and every 40 minutes thereafter. No weekend service; use the On-Demand Shuttle instead.

On-Demand Shuttles (weekends only)—Offers shared-ride service with designated pick-up and drop-off points focused around the Fairfax Campus; does not serve Mason Square or the SciTech Campus.

Fairfax City CUE Bus—Students and employees can ride any of the four Fairfax City CUE routes to and from the Rappahannock River Lane stop. The CUE bus travels throughout Fairfax City and to the Vienna Metro stop for free.

Virtual Permits
Your license plate will serve as your parking permit. No more hangtags. It is important that your vehicle is associated with your permit, not just your parking account. Read step-by-step instructions on how to assign your license plate to your permit here.

To remove vehicles that you no longer use, own, or possess, complete the Vehicle Deactivation Request form to remove the vehicles from your parking portal.

Short-Term Parking
Students, faculty, and staff who do not require parking on campus regularly may want to consider daily, weekly, and monthly options:

Parking garage visitor parking: $5-19 daily
Lots L/K: $11.50/day
Lot P (Field House): $8.50/day
West Campus Lot/Rapidan River Road: $5.50/day
General Lot Evening (valid after 4 p.m.): $8.50/day
SciTech Campus Daily: $8.50/day
Lots L/K Weekly: $35
Lots L/K Monthly: $85

Daily permits are available online at parking.gmu.edu. You can purchase them in advance on the parking portal or via ParkMobile when you arrive. Pay stations are available near the exits of parking garages and decks and in Lot P only. They accept Mason Money, MasterCard, Visa, prepaid validations, and cash.

Science and Technology (SciTech) Campus Parking

Fairfax–SciTech General, Lot I, Lot J, Lot R, and reserved parking deck permits are valid in the Occoquan, King, Discovery, Hylton, and Tower parking lots at the SciTech Campus. Please follow signage in these lots, as parking spaces may be designated for various uses or permits.
The Shops parking lot in front of Beacon Hall has faculty/staff, event permit, and 30-minute parking on the northwest side. The southeast side of the lot (left side facing the building) is for retail parking only.
At the SciTech Campus, daily parking permits are available online for $8.50/day, or via ParkMobile at $2 for the first hour and an additional $1 per hour, to the $8.50 daily maximum.

Mason Square Parking (Arlington)
You must work or be attending class at Mason Square to be eligible to purchase a Mason Square parking permit. Access cards are needed for both the Van Metre and Vernon Smith garages. Hourly visitor parking is only available in the Van Metre Garage. For more information, go to the Mason Square parking webpage.

Please use caution when approaching both garages with the ongoing construction of the new Fuse building.

Fairfax–SciTech Campus permits are not valid at Mason Square without authorization from Parking Services.
In Vernon Smith Garage, Mason Square general permit faculty/staff and student parking is available on levels B3–P1 and on level B4 after 6 p.m.
- There is no guarantee of space in the general permit parking area.
- Please pay careful attention to signage, as some spaces are designated for retail use only.

Alternative Transportation Options

Bicycling
As a recognized bicycle-friendly university, George Mason has more than 1,400 bicycle parking spaces around the Fairfax Campus, as well as plenty of bike racks at the regional campuses. Go to bike.gmu.edu for more information.

Covered bike parking is available under shelters around campus and on Levels 1 and 2 of Rappahannock River Deck.
George Mason’s bicycle registration program offers registrants free bike locks and bike lights.
The Patriot Bikes check-out program is available at the RAC and the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
There is a dismount zone between the East Building and Enterprise Hall. Golf carts are not permitted in the dismount zone, and those using bikes, scooters, skateboards, or skates must dismount and walk. This is for everyone’s safety.

Carpooling Options
Students and employees may qualify for a 20–40% rebate on their reserved parking permits by carpooling. Go to the carpool/vanpool page for more information.

The Carpool Zones provide designated locations for share riders to drop off between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m., Monday–Friday. To park in a carpool zone, you must have at least two people in the car, including the driver, and a general student or faculty/staff parking permit.

Lot A Carpool Zone: Accessed off of Mattaponi River Lane
Rappahannock River Deck Carpool Zone: The first level of the Rappahannock River Deck General permit area

MasonCommutes: Find carpool partners or a bike or transit buddy within the Mason community. Propose a trip or request rides on Mason Commutes, the go-to place for Mason ridesharing.

Sign up with your Mason Net ID and password on MasonCommutes.
Carpooling can be a great way to save money and to reduce Mason’s carbon footprint.

Electric Scooter Parking
Electric personal scooters and shared mobility scooters do not require a permit. They must be parked at a designated scooter corral parking area located around campus or at or adjacent to a bike rack. Get more information.

Please remember that electric bikes, scooters, and other electric personal transportation devices cannot be brought indoors at George Mason.

Zipcar
Zipcars on the first level of the Rappahannock Deck and in Lot R and are available for rental by the hour. Get more information and sign up for George Mason discounts for Zipcar.

Free Mpox Vaccine Clinic on Campus

George Mason’s Student Health Services and Employee Health and Well-Being will offer a free mpox vaccination clinic for students, faculty, and staff on Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Register here (only name and email required).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides information on who should receive the vaccine. The mpox vaccine requires two doses, and clinic staff will schedule the second dose. The 2024 Learning Multiverse Conference: AI-Enabled Immersive Technologies (IM-TECH) in Workforce Training and Education will be hosted on Thursday, Sept. 12, at Mason Square.

Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how IM-TECH, partnered with AI, is revolutionizing workplace training and education. The conference will feature relevant use cases and demonstrations that illustrate the transformative role of these technologies in training and development. Researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry will share their expertise and discuss the implications of pairing IM-TECH and AI, and the enhanced ability to augment learning and transform workplace educational methodologies.

This conference is a collaborative event organized by George Mason's Division of Learning Technologies, College of Education and Human Development, and the Institute for Digital Innovation (IDIA), along with LEIDOS, SEI-DC, the Defense Acquisition University, and other government agencies in the region. Leadership Opportunity in the Working Fathers Employee Resource Group

Are you a dedicated father who values work-life balance and supports a thriving workplace culture? Would you like to meet other fathers and have an opportunity to network and share parenthood challenges? A leadership position is open within George Mason’s Working Fathers Employee Resource Group (ERG).

The Working Fathers ERG is a community dedicated to supporting fathers in balancing their professional responsibilities with family life. The ERG leader(s) would foster a supportive community by organizing events, meetings, and activities that promote networking and mutual support among working fathers.

The Human Resources Faculty and Staff Engagement Team provides administrative support to all ERG leaders. If you are interested in learning more about the Working Fathers ERG and/or serving as a leader of the group, contact engagehr@gmu.edu.

Campus Updates

New Procedures for Trash Collection and Cleaning in Campus Offices

Faculty and staff will be responsible for emptying the individual trash can in their workspace into larger trash receptacles in common areas. Housekeeping staff will no longer empty personal trash cans located at desks/cubicles/private offices.
Workspaces/offices will be cleaned weekly.

These changes are being implemented after a pilot program was conducted on the SciTech Campus and in Merten Hall on the Fairfax Campus during the 2023–24 academic year. Read more about the changes.

Parking Services Offices Closed Aug. 6 for Training

All Parking Services offices will be closed on Tuesday, Aug. 6, for staff training. Normal hours will resume on Wednesday, Aug. 7. Contact parking@gmu.edu or 703-993-2710 with questions.

Tony and Olivier Award-winning singer and actress Lea Salonga headlines the 2024 ARTS by George! benefit concert performing songs she has made famous throughout her extraordinary four-decade career on Broadway and in animated movie blockbusters. Born in the Philippines, Salonga originated the lead role of Kim in the West End and Broadway productions of Miss Saigon, and she was the first Asian cast member to perform the role of Eponine in Les Misérables on Broadway. Recognized by fans of all ages as the singing voice for two animated Disney princesses—Jasmine in Aladdin and Fa Mulan in Mulan—Salonga was named a “Disney Legend” by the Walt Disney Company in 2011.

All year long, photographers in ��AV’s Office of University Branding capture the moments that make Mason All Together Different. We asked our photographers to share their favorite photos from the 2023–24 school year.

As we prepare for a new academic year, let’s look back at these recent memories—skillfully frozen in time for the George Mason vault.

“This photo was taken during a brand shoot, and all of the models were George Mason students,” said Ron Aira, senior photographer in the Office of University Branding. “Someone turned on some music, and they all just started to dance. It was a fun moment that captured the spontaneity of life on campus.”

“I took portraits of Moussokoura Ouattara to go with a graduation profile video,” said Aira. “She was graduating at the same time as her daughter. This photo captures the joy and pride she was feeling upon reaching this milestone.”

“Capturing the energy and joy of the Indian Student Association and friends during Holi Moli on campus is always one of my favorite events of the year,” said Evan Cantwell, senior photographer in the Office of University Branding.

“One of my first assignments working at George Mason was photographing the Biomedical Research Lab,” said Cantwell. “Twenty years later, I was back—and this time, I was behind the curtains. Even though the lab wasn't ‘hot,’ for illustrative purposes, everyone was wearing biohazard suits. I was just wearing my office clothes.”

“During the winter, on one of those snowy days, the university delayed operations until noon,” said Cristian Torres, videographer/photographer in the Office of University Branding. “Two students took advantage of the extra time and got into a snowball fight. Luckily, I was there to capture that moment.”

“This was my first time attending Mason Day,” said Eduardo Macedo, student photographer in the Office of University Branding. “I was fortunate to have front row access as a photographer, which allowed me to capture this moment. Her eyes just popped with the light.” Macedo is majoring in business with a concentration in finance.

“I saw this opportunity to capture the group’s energy after winning the Homecoming Lip Sync battle,” said Ayman Rashid, student photographer in the Office of University Branding. “It’s a bit messy, there are some funny facial expressions, and a whole lot of blinking, but I like that. I feel like it’s one of the more authentic and lively photos I’ve taken, which is why it’s one of my favorites.” Rashid is a graphic design major with a minor in photography.
