Campus Updates

Police Training Exercise on Fairfax Campus: Dec. 4–5

The Fairfax County Police helicopter division will conduct a training exercise near the Fairfax Campus on Wednesday, Dec. 4, and Thursday, Dec. 5, around 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The training will involve helicopter activity in the vicinity of West Campus. The helicopters are expected to fly over Campus Drive and lower athletic fields during the training exercise. For questions, contact the George Mason Police nonemergency number at 703-993-2810.

INTO Mason Graduate Colloquium

INTO Mason pathway students will present findings from their first authentic research efforts as graduate students. The INTO Mason Graduate Colloquium will showcase the work of multilingual and international students and their investigations in their disciplines. Stop by the Ángel Cabrera Global Center lobby on Friday, Dec. 6, between 10:30 a.m. and noon. Light refreshments will be served.

December Staff Senate Meeting

The December Staff Senate meeting will focus on physical and mental health resources available to staff at George Mason. Guest speakers include Angela Chezem, medical director for Employee Health and Well-Being, and Robyn Mehlenbeck, director of the Center for Community Mental Health.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to noon. Guest speakers will present at 11 a.m. Attend the meeting on the Fairfax Campus in Merten Hall, Room 1203, or join via Zoom. Learn more.

Call for Proposals: Seed Translational Research Project

With support from the National Science Foundation’s Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program, George Mason’s Institute for a Sustainable Earth and the Virginia Climate Center are seeking proposals from George Mason faculty for the spring 2025 Seed Translational Research Project (STRP) program. Faculty participants will develop their own project in alignment with George Mason’s ART initiatives and receive support to scale up the impact of their research through community-engaged, experiential curriculum. Safety Tips for Online Holiday Shopping

With online holiday shopping underway, Information Technology Services (ITS) is reminding the ��AV community that cybercriminals want to take the “happy” out of their holidays. More than 72.3 million people are expected to spend about $13.2 billion shopping online on Cyber Monday. ITS is offering George Mason community members information about the precautions they can take to stay safe.

Tips include using Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), keeping software updated on all devices, and using strong passwords on all accounts. Check out the complete list of tips.

Course Redesign Academy

Course Redesign Academy will include Zoom meetings on Jan. 8–9, 2025, to support faculty members’ final adjustments for a spring course or advanced planning for summer/fall. U.S. Navy Concert Band
45th International Saxophone Symposium
Friday, Jan. 10, and Saturday, Jan. 11
Fairfax Campus Center for the Arts
The 45th International Saxophone Symposium, hosted by the U.S. Navy Band, features over 150 performances, masterclasses and lectures designed for musicians of all ages. The International Saxophone Symposium features world-renowned saxophonists, while highlighting the prominence of the saxophone in both classical and jazz literature. Friday night's concert presents the U.S. Navy Concert Band with a mixture of band pieces and classically oriented saxophone solos. Featured soloists will include Makoto Hondo, ~Nois, and Musician First Class Harrison Clarke. This event is open to the public and no tickets are required.

December Staff Senate Meeting

University Winter Break Lockdown

The university will be closed for winter break from Monday, Dec. 23, at 6 a.m. through Monday, Jan. 6, 2025, at 6 a.m. However, some employees and students may require entry for special projects into buildings without electronic access. Therefore, pre-planned access for non-electronic lock buildings can be coordinated in advance via the Winter Break Building Access Form found on the Mason Police website. Failure to coordinate with Mason Police in advance may result in being denied access. For questions on building card access, email caso@gmu.edu.

Spark and Share hosted by SciTech Innovation District

The Spark and Share event at the SciTech Campus is a chance to connect with local tech leaders in the future Innovation District, enjoy food and drinks, and network with professionals from industry, government, and academia. The event will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 4:30–6:30 p.m. at Mum Mum restaurant on George Mason’s SciTech Campus. RSVP.

The campus community is invited to discover the critical role of the Census Bureau in shaping public policy with national statistics and data collection.

Peer Advisor Application Open

University Studies is hiring Peer Advisors to co-teach "Intro to Mason" classes in fall 2025. This is an on-campus job opportunity for undergraduate students. Faculty and staff may encourage interested students to fill out an application and attend an information session.

Apply for the Emerging Leaders Supervisor Series

Human Resources is now accepting applications for the next cohort of the Emerging Leaders Supervisor Series. The series begins in February 2025 and runs until May 2026. This cohort will be hybrid to accommodate those participants working fully remotely.

The goals of the Emerging Leaders Supervisor Series are to support participants as they:

Develop a leadership mindset
Create and implement a vision for their own leadership and their team
Lead a high-performing team
Learn tools and strategies to grow their self-awareness, relationships, and communication skills, which will support the above three objectives.

Interested in helping local high school students in non-traditional programs achieve their dream of a college education? Become a mentor with George Mason's Dream Catchers program. Mentors attend monthly workshops on campus to assist students seeking to attend college upon graduating high school. Interested? Clear the Air(way): Flu, COVID, RSV, and Pneumonia Vaccine Clinic

Employee Health and Well-Being, in partnership with the College of Public Health and Giant Pharmacy, will host a vaccine clinic on Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus, Peterson Hall. Faculty, staff, and family members (ages 18+) insured through Anthem or Aetna can receive flu, COVID, RSV, and pneumonia vaccines.

Individuals insured under Kaiser or other carriers should verify their eligibility for this clinic with their provider or visit vaccines.gov to find an appointment elsewhere.

Vaccine eligibility:

Flu: All ages 6+ months, recommended once a year. (Note: This clinic is for participants ages 18+)
COVID-19: Recommended for ages 6+ months, regardless of previous vaccination (Note: This clinic is for participants ages 18+)

Join the University Life Supervision Collective on Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 2–3 p.m. for a virtual workshop focusing on strategies to support a hybrid workspace through intentional use of technology. In the session, participants will:

Reflect on workplace environment transitions (in-person, remote, hybrid) and impact of technology in their work
Consider challenges with technology integration on their team and strategize solutions

George Mason Introduces Brave and Bold: The Patriot Roast

George Mason and Tinycup Coffee, an alumni-owned business, have collaborated on a co-branded coffee called Brave & Bold: The Patriot Roast. It is a medium-dark roast featuring a blend of premium, specialty-grade coffee beans from Central and South America using a traditional drum roasting method. The coffee is currently available to purchase by the bag online and on the Fairfax Campus at the Express store (located in the Johnson Center) and One Stop Shop.

One-Year Naming Anniversary of the Costello College of Business: Donation Drive and Service Event

The Costello College of Business invites the Mason community to participate in a donation drive and service event to benefit the Patriot Pantry. This event is hosted in celebration of the one year anniversary of the naming of the business school as the Donald G. Costello of College of Business.

Donation items for the Patriot Pantry can be dropped off on the Fairfax Campus in Enterprise Hall, Room 008, and at Mason Square in Van Metre Hall, Room 402, through Thursday, Oct. 31. Find out what items are needed.

Students are invited to join University Career Services for Internship Week, which includes in-person and virtual events to help students learn about the impact an internship can have on their career journey. Faculty and staff are encouraged to share details with their students.

George Mason's Department of Economics invites the university community to the James Buchanan and Vernon Smith Seminar on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 5–6:30 p.m. at the Fairfax Campus, Center for the Arts, on the Dr. Linda Apple Monson Grand Tier.

This seminar series is designed to appeal to a broad audience and is named to honor the department's two Nobel Laureates and to recognize scholars who have made outstanding contributions to economics. Matthew Jackson, the William D. Eberle Professor of Economics at Stanford University, is the featured speaker. He will discuss "The Role of Networks and Social Capital in Determining Patterns of Economic Mobility." A reception will follow the presentation.

Join Mandy Gonzalez for an evening of Broadway songs, film scores, and music from her debut album, Fearless. Gonzalez starred on Broadway in Hamilton as Angelica Schuyler, in Wicked as Elphaba, and as Nina Rosario in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights. Miranda wrote her the song, “Fearless,” which tells the story of how her parents met while serving their country during the Vietnam War. Gonzalez’s debut at the Hylton Center will also honor the veterans in the community. The Osbourn Park High School Madrigal Singers, conducted by Dominick Izzo, will join Gonzalez for a special guest appearance. This performance is part of George Mason’s Veterans and the Arts Initiative, providing free tickets for veterans and servicemembers.

George Mason Introduces Brave and Bold: The Patriot Roast

George Mason and Tinycup Coffee, an alumni-owned business, have collaborated on a co-branded coffee called Brave & Bold: The Patriot Roast. It is a medium-dark roast featuring a blend of premium, specialty-grade coffee beans from Central and South America using a traditional drum roasting method. The coffee is currently available online and will be in both "c-store" locations on the Fairfax Campus: the Express store (located in the Johnson Center) and One Stop Shop.

October is Campus Sustainability Month

Join the University Sustainability team, along with campus partners, for a range of engaging activities and events during Campus Sustainability Month. ��AV observes Campus Sustainability Month every October, aligning with the international observance to bring awareness to campus sustainability.

The University Libraries actively collect online resources suitable for use as course materials across the curriculum. In addition to e-books and journal articles, they have online case studies, streaming video, datasets, and more. Students can access online resources on- and off-campus, at no cost, by using their university login credentials when prompted. Learn more.

AI Salon Series
The AI Salon Series brings community members together to discuss current events and intersectional topics surrounding artificial intelligence. In the style of scientific salons, a Mason Librarian will provide a brief presentation on a specific topic related to AI. Following the presentation, the floor will open for a lively discussion. The primary mission of George Mason’s Safe Zone+ Program, like the LGBTQ+ Resources Center, is to create a safer, more welcoming and inclusive campus environment, to strengthen community, and to encourage networking among faculty, staff, and students toward the goal of supporting the well-being of LGBTQ people. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to sign up for a Safe Zone+ Program virtual session.

Toastmasters Open House

Trunk or Treat at George Mason

Contemporary Student Services has officially opened registration for volunteers to decorate trunks and compete for prizes at the third annual George Mason Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. Registration is open to university offices and student clubs and organizations. To register to decorate a trunk and give out candy, complete the form .

The George Mason Trunk or Treat is a free event for families in the George Mason and local communities. Last year's event was attended by more than 500 parents, caregivers, and children. Get more information and RSVP to attend.

Flu Shot Clinics

Student Loan Repayment Session for Faculty/Staff

Human Resources and the Student Support and Advocacy Center will host an information session for faculty and staff on the repayment of student loans. This virtual event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 1 p.m. The session will include an overview of repayment plans, recent updates, and information on Public Service Loan Forgiveness. Mason Nation Thriving Together 5K

Pitch in on the Piedmont

Make a difference at the SciTech Campus by joining Pitch in on the Piedmont, a day of service to care for the Piedmont Trail—a 1.2 mile trail through forested wetland on campus. This forest is home to many deer, turtles, and other wildlife. The EDGE works with George Mason students to organize this event each semester, so that students and the local community can continue to enjoy this natural feature.

Pitch in on the Piedmont will be hosted on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet at the green and white tent near Katherine Johnson Hall. Students may RSVP on Mason 360. Faculty, staff, and community members RSVP.

But, it boasts a flourishing music scene, as well as a very central location, keeping it well connected with Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Hear the perspectives of the Differdange music school faculty, whose members have studied jazz in European cities like Brussels, Amsterdam, or others and are now based in Luxembourg. This event is free and open to the public.
