This involves developing and applying novel, flexible, and reliable models via interdisciplinary collaborations in various areas, such as transportation, bioinformatics, healthcare, and finance. His research interests include machine learning and statistical modeling, explainable AI, model fairness and robustness, data exploration, and active learning.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Prior to joining Mason, Tianshu was a Quantitative Analytics Specialist at Wells Fargo. He earned his PhD from Cornell University and was a graduate of Naval Postgraduate School and Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. </span><span>Looking back at career highlights at Mason he once said, “Part of my job was the care and feeding of our military students. I advised every single one of them and many of them have gone on to be leaders in the defense analysis field.” In addition, he was proud of some of the department’s funded work, citing an important study on how the presence of women in military units impacts the units’ effectiveness.</span><span>  </span></p> <p class="xxmsonormal"><span>Among other duties, Loerch served as a faculty marshal at the college degree celebrations and university commencement. For the past eleven years, the <a href="https://cec.gmu.edu">College of Engineering and Computing </a>depended on his leadership to organize and coordinate faculty volunteers, a job he once described as neither trivial nor simple. His detailed charts, notes, and guidance will be a permanent reminder of this service to the community.</span></p> <p class="xxmsonormal"><span>Loerch played with the Northern Virginia Senior Softball league; was principal bassoonist of the Manassas Symphony Orchestra since 2000 as well as a board member; he enjoyed riding his bike with the Old Cranks Cycling Club out of Vint Hill, Va. as well as taking cycling trips throughout the country. He was the ultimate New York Yankees fan. </span></p> <p class="xxmsonormal"><span>“I am personally thankful for Andy’s invaluable support as associate chair,” says John Shortle, department chair of Systems Engineering and Operations Research. “He brought so much to the department. We will all miss his stories, sense of humor, and friendship.” </span></p> <p class="xxmsonormal"><span>Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. Previously, she served as dean of Engineering at the University of Tennessee, department head of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Penn State, department chair of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Iowa State, technology thrust lead for the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII), director of the NSF Center for e-Design, program director at NSF, and professor at Virginia Tech and the University of Massachusetts. She has industry work experience with GE. She is a fellow and member of ASME and IISE, and a member of AAAS, Alpha Pi Mu, ASEE, SME, and Tau Beta Pi. She is an area editor for the Engineering Economist, an editorial board member for Computers in Industry, and an Academic Senior VP on the IISE Board of Trustees. Raz is a professor in the Department of Systems Engineering and Operations Research at AV's College of Engineering and Computing. His research focuses on understanding the collaborative nature of autonomy and developing systems engineering methodologies for integrating autonomous systems. Raz's research brings a systems engineering perspective, particularly inspired by complex adaptive systems, to information fusion and artificial intelligence/machine learning technologies that form the foundations of collaborative and integrated autonomous systems.</p> <p>Prior to joining AV, Raz was a visiting assistant professor at Purdue University School of Aeronautics and Astronautics where he led research projects on understanding complexity in systems of systems and introducing autonomy in high-speed and hypersonic aerospace systems. Raz holds a temporary faculty appointment with the U.S. Navy Naval Surface Warfare Center at Crane, Indiana in support of complex systems and information fusion research activities and has worked with John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU-APL) and the United States Missile Defense Agency. Raz has also worked as a systems engineer for Honeywell Aerospace on flight management and flight control systems for civilian and military aircraft.</p> <p>Raz is a co-chair of the International Council of Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Complex Systems Working Group and a Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP). ZS is one of the world’s largest consulting firms specializing in sales, marketing, and commercial issues using data-driven analytical approaches. Having joined ZS in its infancy and having been a Partner for 20 years with the firm, Luo had played multiple key leadership roles in the firm, including the project lead, client lead, global practice lead, and country business lead.</p> <p>Over the 26 years at ZS, Luo had worked with over 60 clients in the US and in Asia in multiple industries such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, insurance, media, and high-tech. Luo and his team routinely used statistical, simulation, and optimization methods in solving various sales and marketing problems, such as customer segmentation, pricing, forecasting, marketing mix, sales force sizing, resource allocation, performance evaluation, incentive plan design, and sales quota setting.</p> <p>Luo enjoys sharing his experience in applying analytical approaches to business problems with students. She is passionate about engineering education and outreach activities. She strives to create a teaching environment that promotes problem-solving and communication skills, self-reflection, and collaboration among students. In that capacity, Pyster oversees the CEC research portfolio which has rapidly grown to an anticipated value of over $400M with annual expenditures approaching $70M. Pyster continues to oversee the SEBoK which is sponsored by the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), the IEEE Systems Council, and the Stevens Institute of Technology. Together with her students and post-docs, she focuses on creating mathematically-based decision-support tools and algorithms that can be used to design, manage, operate, maintain, and protect the built environment. Her research has been supported by various sources, including private organizations, non-profits, and local, national, and international government agencies.</p> <p>Miller-Hooks holds a PhD in Civil Engineering and an MS in Engineering from the University of Texas - Austin, as well as a BS in Civil Engineering from Lafayette College.
