As a medical doctor with training in family medicine and urgent care, she is passionate about helping patients get better quickly and enhancing access to care. </span></p> <p><span class="intro-text">At the largest and fastest-growing public research university in Virginia, Koka has found a place where the need for that care continues to grow.</span></p> <hr /><p><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span>The doctor is in: </span></span></span></strong><span><span><span>In her role, Koka provides direction and leadership for </span>Student Health Services<span> to ensure students receive quality clinical care. She also serves as a medical advisor and resource to campus leaders on health-related matters. In a post-pandemic world, where many aspects of health care remain an urgent community need, her input is essential across George Mason’s campuses.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span>Helping the student body: </span></span></span></strong><span><span><span>Koka knows that learning is not confined to the classroom, and some of the biggest lessons can address a fundamental part of students’ lives: their health.   </span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <figure class="quote"><span><span><span><span><span><span>“I am excited to work at George Mason because of the opportunity to care for a diverse student population,” said Koka. “I want to help guide students as they become advocates for their own health and create goals to maintain a healthy lifestyle.”   </span></span></span></span></span></span></figure><p><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span>Appointments on the books: </span></span></span></strong><span><span><span>Last year, Student Health Services had 16,500 student interactions—this includes in-person and telehealth visits, lab work, and nurse triage interactions across the Fairfax, Mason Square, and Science and Technology campuses.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Koka knows this number could go even higher. One of her primary goals is to increase awareness of the health services available to students. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <figure class="quote"><span><span><span><span><span><span>“One of the biggest challenges we face is creating awareness around Student Health Services and the fact that we are a full-service medical clinic,” said Koka. </span></span></span></span></span></span></figure><p><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span>Addressing the body and mind: </span></span></span></strong><span><span><span>“We continue to see the need for mental health care as a challenge in the community,” said Koka. “Student Health Services has a unique approach to behavioral health, as we utilize a collaborative care model.” </span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <figure role="group"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/extra_large_content_image/public/2024-11/241011317.jpg?itok=mPb-tdxV" width="1480" height="987" alt="Nandini Koka" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>Dr. Koka leads a staff of nearly 50 that includes doctors, nurse practitioners, counselors, and nurses. Koka says that this team approach has given students more touchpoints with clinicians and provides a more holistic care model.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Additionally, all patients who visit Student Health Services are given a mental health screening at their first visit, and once a year thereafter. Primary care providers are a key point to identify concerns related to mental health. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span>Finding ways to make it cost-free:</span></span></span></strong><span><span><span> Sexual and reproductive care is another critical area of need at Student Health Services. “We have partnered with a community organization to provide free sexually transmitted infection (STI) services to students throughout the semester,” said Koka. “We continue to look for ways to expand access to services for our students.”</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Fostering a supportive community:</span></span></strong><span><span> A dynamic campus community is what brought Koka to higher education. “</span></span><span><span>I have been able to interact with our students and see their excitement about being here at George Mason and wanting to be a part of this community,” said Koka. </span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Rest as part of health:</span></span></strong><span><span> Outside of work, Koka enjoys spending time with her family. “Our two daughters keep us busy with soccer and dance, and we have fun going to the games and watching the performances,” said Koka. Wernicke said. “Music is a major source of well-being for me and something I enjoy with my family.” She also finds joy and relaxation by exercising, running, spending time with friends, and cooking. </span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Support from all around:</span></span></strong><span><span> Wernicke says she thrives at Mason because of the people According to the American Council on Education, student mental health is the top concern of college and university presidents and is also the number one reason students leave college. A recent report by Gallup and the Lumina Foundation found that three out of four students in bachelor’s degrees programs who considered stopping out – stopping with the intention of returning to school – cited emotional stress as their reason. </p> <p>Sixty percent of all students who have sought mental health support through TimelyCare said they would have done nothing if the service were not available, according to the company. </p> <p>“Meeting the need for equitable, on-demand access to care is a critical challenge that extends beyond campus boundaries. TimelyCare allows colleges and universities like AV to solve problems rather than just treat symptoms,” said Luke Hejl, TimelyMD CEO and co-founder. “Our mission at TimelyMD is to improve the health and well-being of college students by making virtual care accessible anytime, anywhere. Through TimelyCare, we are proud to deliver best-in-class health and well-being solutions to help students thrive.” </p> <p>Founded in 2017, TimelyMD serves more than a million students at more than 200 campuses nationwide.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/116" hreflang="en">Campus News</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/3611" hreflang="en">campus life</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/5166" hreflang="en">Mental Health</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/766" hreflang="en">Well-Being</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/366" hreflang="en">University Life</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/216" hreflang="en">Office of the Provost</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/17146" hreflang="en">TimelyMD</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/17356" hreflang="en">Strategic Direction</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Mon, 24 Oct 2022 18:20:30 +0000 John Hollis 101491 at Research says club sports are Mason’s untapped resource /news/2022-09/research-says-club-sports-are-masons-untapped-resource <span>Research says club sports are Mason’s untapped resource</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/231" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" xml:lang="">Colleen Rich</span></span> <span>Wed, 09/28/2022 - 14:22</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:body" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasebody"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Body</div> <div class="field__item"><p><span class="intro-text">Participation in club sports is a significant factor in bringing in and maintaining students at AV, and also contributes to higher graduation rates, a new study has found.</span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-right"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2022-09/Zikun%20Li_0.jpg?itok=KFZkZIX2" width="243" height="350" alt="Zikun Li " loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>Zikun Li. All these factors lead to extraordinary levels of stress, burnout, and serious psychiatric symptoms, including <span>increased risk of suicidal thoughts and suicide</span>.” In addition to the health of individual workers, this also has a negative effect on patient care and health care organizations. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The mission of the Mason Health and Public Safety Workforce Resiliency Training Program is to develop and deliver accessible education and training activities that advance the overall safety, health, and well-being of a diverse population of nurses, social workers, public health practitioners, and leaders practicing in rural and underserved communities. Mason's interdisciplinary team will take a systems approach to address resiliency and optimal well-being of the individual within their health care organizations and working environments.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>“The pandemic has shown us how vital it is to take care of ourselves, especially for our health care professionals who are facing immense challenges on the front lines of COVID-19,” said Senator Tim Kaine (VA-D) in a <a href="https://www.kaine.senate.gov/press-releases/kaine-secures-over-56-million-in-grants-to-virginia-to-promote-mental-health-among-health-care-workforce" target="_blank">press release</a>. “As we’ve seen the last two years, to ensure our nation has the medical workforce necessary to respond to public health crises, we need to support our health care providers.” Mason is one of three Virginia universities that received funding as part of the American Rescue Plan that U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is distributing across the country to reduce burnout and promote mental health among the health workforce.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The Program at Mason is an interdisciplinary, collaborative effort. <a href="https://wellbeing.gmu.edu/about/faculty-and-staff/" target="_blank">Nance Lucas</a>, executive director of Mason’s Center for the Advancement of Well-Being will lead the Program’s short-term trainings. Cheryl Oetjen, Interim Chair of the School of Nursing; Holly Motto, Associate Professor of Social Work; and Ali Weinstein, Associate Professor of Global and Community Health, will serve as leads for curriculum enhancement in their departments.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Additionally, the program will draw on the expertise and outreach capabilities of a wide range of national and regional partner organizations, which will help the Mason Program understand the needs of health professionals in rural and underserved areas. National partners include America’s Essential Hospitals (AEH), the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO). Regional organizations include the Northern Virginia Area Health Education Center (NVAHEC), Virginia Community Health Association (VCHA), the Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW-VA), and the Virginia Association of Colleges of Nursing (VACN).</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The Program at Mason will offer a variety of in-person and distance learning pathways to students and working health care professionals. The program will include special guest speakers in the <a href="https://leadingtowellbeing.gmu.edu/" target="_blank">Leading to Well-Being Speaker Series</a>, Leading Thriving Organizations Certificate Program, a specialized Resilience Badge for frontline health workers, and the Mental Health First Aid Certificate program. Funding will also support enhancing the College of Health and Human Services’ curriculum to include evidence-based strategies to reduce burnout, suicide, mental health complications, and substance use disorders, and promote resiliency among health care professionals. Students will also use the College’s Virtual Reality and Simulation lab to prepare for challenging situations in an interprofessional team and learn strategies to increase resiliency.</span></span></span></p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/3046" hreflang="en">health care</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/6116" hreflang="en">Training</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/766" hreflang="en">Well-Being</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/5166" hreflang="en">Mental Health</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/5501" hreflang="en">CHHS</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/4231" hreflang="en">Department of Health Administration and Policy</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/6771" hreflang="en">HAP Faculty</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/15131" hreflang="en">workers</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/15126" hreflang="en">workforce</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Tue, 22 Feb 2022 14:34:25 +0000 John Brandon Cantrell 65856 at Podcast - EP26: COVID-19 mental health crisis is the second pandemic /news/2021-06/podcast-ep26-covid-19-mental-health-crisis-second-pandemic <span>Podcast - EP26: COVID-19 mental health crisis is the second pandemic</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/266" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" xml:lang="">Damian Cristodero</span></span> <span>Tue, 06/08/2021 - 08:56</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_associated_people" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-associated-people"> <h2>In This Story</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">People Mentioned in This Story</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/profiles/president" hreflang="und">Gregory Washington</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:body" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasebody"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Body</div> <div class="field__item"><p>COVID-19 presented individuals with many challenges.
