I caught up with Deree to learn more about his work and his experience at Mason. </span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><strong>What inspires you?</strong></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span>I always, even as a kid, liked doing photography for fun. I really got into it in high school. I took photography classes all four years. I had a really great teacher, Ms. Davidson, and I won my first awards at that point. That inspired me to be more proactive in taking photos and submitting them and sharing them. It’s continued to be something that I like to do as a hobby throughout my education. </span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><strong>Could you tell me more about what you do at Mason?</strong></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span>I am a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in <a href="https://education.gmu.edu/counseling/med-clinical-mental-health">clinical mental health counseling</a>. I am two years into my program with one year left, attending full-time. I decided I wanted to be a counselor in undergrad (psychology at James Madison University) because I had had positive experiences with counselors and wanted to do that for other people.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>I have two student jobs, one as a graduate researcher for the <a href="https://rrchnm.org/">Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media</a>, and one as a clerk for the Faculty Senate. My photography is more of a hobby, although I do also use the editing and planning skills I use with it in my work and academic career. </span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><strong>What led you to ŃÇÖŢAV?</strong></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span>I had a friend who was attending undergraduate here and heard that Mason offered a good community. I went to high school in Arlington, so I liked the Northern Virginia region, and I knew that I wanted to become licensed in Virginia. There are good options for my line of work in the Northern Virginia/D.C. region. </span></span></span></p> <figure role="group"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/2024-06/as_above_so_below.jpg" width="1000" height="750" alt="As Above, So Below, a BW photo by Truman Deree" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>As Above, So Below, a photo by Truman Deree</figcaption></figure><h3><span><span><span><strong>What do you do at the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media?</strong></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span>I am part of a team researching the U.S. census on religious bodies from 1926. We look at photos of the actual census forms and are digitizing information from those forms so that we can gain a better understanding of America’s religious institutions at the time and map it out. I have been working on that project for about 2.5 semesters now. It’s a large ongoing project, called <a href="https://rrchnm.org/portfolio-item/american-religious-ecologies/">American Religious Ecologies</a>.</span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><strong>What are your future plans, and how will the VMFA scholarship impact those?</strong></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span>I’m hoping to graduate next May. Right now, I’m doing my practicum, and I have two semesters of internship left. After that, my plan is to become a licensed counselor. The fellowship will be helpful to me by giving me some added stability to pay for all of my needs through graduate school. I’m very thankful in that regard. </span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><strong>Did you have any advice to share with other students? </strong></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span>First, I would say that for any creative project, practice and submit. There are so many places to share your art if you look. I think Mason is really great in this regard because there are so many student publications for most types of writing or art you can think of. I personally have been published in the <a href="https://issuu.com/osmgmu/docs/hcr_2022-2023_web/68">Hispanic Culture Review</a>, and that was super cool, so I encourage Mason students to explore the list of student publications and see if any of them correspond with what you’re into. </span></span></span></p> <p> </p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="6d41a78b-20d5-433d-8ed2-bf15975039c2" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="5975675b-f4cb-4d7e-9600-1065cbe23602" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="351e3ce5-3e8a-4bda-a355-a4d1b73dd2b0" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>Related Stories</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-993a9b9d6e21301701c5462c28cf9edbda530560630f5b550ba665c87eed1744"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"><li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2024-06/counseling-graduate-student-awarded-fine-arts-fellowship" hreflang="en">Counseling graduate student awarded fine arts fellowship</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">June 11, 2024</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2023-12/mason-public-health-students-research-will-improve-postnatal-outcomes-mothers-color" hreflang="en">Mason public health student’s research will improve the postnatal outcomes of mothers of color </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">December 5, 2023</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2023-12/mason-doctoral-student-uses-archival-practice-unfold-present" hreflang="en">Mason doctoral student uses archival practice to unfold the present </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">December 4, 2023</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2023-09/window-regions-past-and-present" hreflang="en">A window into the region’s past and present</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">October 9, 2023</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2023-08/student-produced-podcast-green-tunnel-just-achieved-major-milestone" hreflang="en">The student-produced podcast The Green Tunnel just achieved a major milestone </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">August 23, 2023</div></div></li> </ul></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/336" hreflang="en">Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/7806" hreflang="en">Fellowships</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/191" hreflang="en">College of Education and Human Development</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/771" hreflang="en">Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Tue, 11 Jun 2024 12:50:29 +0000 Colleen Rich 112541 at Mason doctoral student uses archival practice to unfold the present /news/2023-12/mason-doctoral-student-uses-archival-practice-unfold-present <span>Mason doctoral student uses archival practice to unfold the present </span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/1226" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" xml:lang="">Pam Shepherd</span></span> <span>Mon, 12/04/2023 - The first episode of The Green Tunnel podcast was released on October 6, 2021, and the grant will fund the effort for another year. </p> <p>“This show has given both graduate students and one amazing undergrad the opportunity to work on a professionally produced podcast,” said Kelly, who just completed a four-year term as the director of RRCHNM. "The students are the producers so they [choose] the topics and figure out who should be interviewed.” </p> <p>Students who join the podcast can earn internship credit for Mason’s applied history program.  </p> <p>“Something unique about this podcast as far as student work goes is that it's very interdisciplinary. I think that's important considering that it's a history podcast,” said Bridget Bukovich, community engagement coordinator at RRCHNM, who started on the podcast as a Mason graduate intern. </p> <p>Eleanor Magness has been hiking for most of her life. “I come from a long line of park rangers on my mom's side,” said the junior <a href="https://historyarthistory.gmu.edu/" target="_blank">public history</a> major. </p> <p>Magness’ love of the trail led her to join the podcast as a freshman intern in 2021 where she wrote, researched, and edited entire podcast episodes, including <a href="https://www.r2studios.org/show/the-green-tunnel/leave-only-footprints/" target="_blank">Leave Only Footprints</a>, <a href="https://www.r2studios.org/show/the-green-tunnel/craving-community/" target="_blank">Craving Community</a>, and her personal favorite, <a href="https://www.r2studios.org/show/the-green-tunnel/gear-up/" target="_blank">Gear Up.</a> </p> <p>“I had full creative control, but Mills was always available to help me and answer any questions I had,” said Magness, who is also in the <a href="https://honorscollege.gmu.edu/" target="_blank">Honors College</a>.</p> <figure role="group" class="align-right"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/medium/public/2023-08/IMG_20211030_124814_817.jpg?itok=1lKPd6LN" width="400" height="339" alt="A group of people named in the image caption stand before a structure. Madl produced the <a href="https://www.r2studios.org/show/the-green-tunnel/Native-Persistence/" target="_blank">Native Persistence</a> episode, which featured Mason associate history professor <a href="https://historyarthistory.gmu.edu/people/gtayac" target="_blank">Gabrielle Tayac</a>, a member of the Piscataway Indian Nation.</p> <p>“It was a great opportunity for me to do community-engaged work in indigenous history and talk to native communities,” said Madl. </p> <p>Madl is from western Pennsylvania, and her favorite hiking location is Allegheny National Forest in Marienville, Pennsylvania. Two of her brothers have completed AT thru-hikes, and Madl also hopes to complete one. </p> <p>"The AT is one giant community,” said Madl. “That’s where a lot of our interviews primarily come from.”  </p> <p>Madl said that the podcast provides the opportunity to talk about many issues such as ensuring equal trail access for all hikers, and how native communities are affected by the trail.  </p> <p>Each season of The Green Tunnel contains around 15 episodes—eight full-length episodes and seven short “iconic locations” episodes. The third season, which launches in mid-October, will focus on the natural history of the trail going back a hundred million years, says Mills. </p> <p>The Green Tunnel has done cross-promotions with other podcasts such as Virginia Outdoor Adventures, the Jester Section Hiker, and the Orange Blaze Florida Trail. Kelly was interviewed on all three shows. </p> <p>Every episode of The Green Tunnel includes a transcript, show notes, suggested readings, and images that relate to the episode topic for listeners who are interested in learning more about the AT.  </p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="177d7345-a51b-4d1f-966f-0ddd719d8c29"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://www.r2studios.org/show/the-green-tunnel/"> <h4 class="cta__title">Listen to the Podcast <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="dc2f8be7-e971-4327-8562-6876e6e7510b"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://rrchnm.org/"> <h4 class="cta__title">Learn about the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="ed0ce90f-1fcb-4cb6-ae39-f3328378f211" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/3126" hreflang="en">College of Humanities and Social Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/771" hreflang="en">Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/226" hreflang="en">podcast</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/316" hreflang="en">history</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/721" hreflang="en">internships</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/271" hreflang="en">Research</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/336" hreflang="en">Students</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 23 Aug 2023 16:43:05 +0000 Shayla Brown 108001 at Mason faculty awarded three NEH grants /news/2023-08/mason-faculty-awarded-three-neh-grants <span>Mason faculty awarded three NEH grants</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/231" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" xml:lang="">Colleen Rich</span></span> <span>Mon, 08/21/2023 - 13:27</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--70-30"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:body" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasebody"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Body</div> <div class="field__item"><p><span class="intro-text">ŃÇÖŢAV is proud to announce that four faculty in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences have been awarded grant awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Talks between Murali and co-director Meha Priyadarshini about lesser-known textiles from South Asia and their presence in the Americas in the late 18th and 19th centuries motivated them to craft a digital public history project that visualizes this complex networked history in ways that are accessible to a global public. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Murali said she hopes this project shows how collaborative research is the way forward for the humanities, especially for those interested in transcultural or global studies. </span></span></span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-right"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/2022-01/NEH_AHRC_Press_Image%205.jpeg" width="350" height="479" alt="image of an Asian textile" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>A cloth merchant from South India in the early-19th century displaying textiles to an Indian middleman who is commissioned to buy the textiles for British traders. Mills Kelly, director of Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at ŃÇÖŢAV, the original home of the archive, because it was not common at the time and social media platforms like Facebook did not exist. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>“It was really difficult to get the first 300 stories,” said Kelly. “In keeping with Roy’s vision, the archive now has 72,000 stories, more than 6,000 digital images, a little over 900 audio files, which makes it the richest archive of people’s personal experience at that moment.”</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>He added, “It’s the story of how average people made sense of this moment.”</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Kelly said the success of these archives depends on people participating, because historians and average people want to know how these events were experienced. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Dan Cohen and Tom Scheinfeldt were two of the founding members of the September 11 digital archive. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Cohen joined Mason in 2001, when the center received an Alfred P. The projects offer a chance to leverage the library’s collection to support digital humanities research.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>“We know there’s so much more treasure to be unlocked here at the Library and in institutions across the country and around the world, and technology can help us understand these collections even more,” said Kate Zwaard, director of digital strategy at the Library of Congress. </span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>The superiority and engagement of America’s Public Bible is enhanced by its ability to explore the trend of how frequently a verse was used, Mullen said.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>America’s Public Bible offers two ways of exploring how the Bible was used in 19th- and early 20th-century newspapers. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>One option is an interactive chart, which allows a user to put in the reference to any of nearly 1,700 most quoted Bible verses and see the changing patterns in their usage over time. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Findings include that “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34) peaked in 1865, while “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13) grew in popularity during World War I. “Suffer little children to come unto me” (and its variations) was the most popular verse in this collection of newspapers. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Visitors to the site are also encouraged to view the trends for collections of verses arranged in topics chosen by Mullen.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>The second way to use site is to get links back to the images of the roughly 11 million newspaper pages at Chronicling America, from 1836 to 1922, with the quotations highlighted, showing how often and when a verse was used, as well as by whom, in what contexts, and for what purposes. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>“Professor Mullen’s project, America’s Public Bible, demonstrates the power of computational methods for historical analysis and is one of the most exciting projects to come out of RRCHNM in several years,” said Mills Kelly, RRCHNM’s executive director and a professor of history at Mason. “In addition to being an important tool for scholars, this project creates an important resource for members of the public who are interested in the role that religion has played in American history.” </span></span></span></span></span></p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/271" hreflang="en">Research</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1011" hreflang="en">Institute for Digital InnovAtion (IDIA)</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/771" hreflang="en">Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/391" hreflang="en">College of Humanities and Social Sciences</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Mon, 21 Jun 2021 16:50:55 +0000 Colleen Rich 46416 at
