Scholarship helps Mason veteran realize his dream to serve America

A strong sense of duty is what led Michael Manges to 亚洲AV,聽and the聽Veterans of聽Foreign聽Wars鈥櫬燬port Clips Help A Hero Scholarship聽is helping him realize聽his聽dream.聽

A聽first-year graduate student in the聽international聽security program within the聽who also works聽full time, Manges聽is one of 158 veterans and active-duty service members awarded a Help A Hero Scholarship this聽semester.聽The scholarship is funded through donations collected annually during the Help A Hero campaign at Sport Clips Haircuts locations around the country and has provided 1,750 scholarships totaling $8 million since 2014.聽

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 expect to get it when I first applied,鈥澛爏aid Manges,聽who graduated from the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown last spring with a degree in political science and geography. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just been fantastic. That financial stability has been really crucial for me.鈥澛

Manges, 23,聽grew up in Central City, Pennsylvania, which is聽just a few minutes聽from the site where ill-fated United Flight 93聽crashed on Sept. 11, 2001, killing all passengers on board聽after they resisted terrorists who had hijacked their plane.聽Growing up there instilled strong feelings in Manges about the importance of protecting the nation.聽聽聽

One weekend a month and two weeks out of the summer didn鈥檛 seem like much聽to ask in return for his education, so Manges joined the Pennsylvania Army National Guard聽after he graduated from聽high school.聽He spent a year deployed to Jordan聽from 2016-17 and has been activated聽in 2020聽along with several other members聽of聽his聽unit to help聽in COVID-19 relief operations.聽

But his dream of聽ultimately聽serving his country in the intelligence or federal law enforcement fields never wavered.聽Mason鈥檚聽international security master鈥檚 degree program聽and proximity to Washington, D.C.,聽made聽it the right choice for him.聽聽

鈥淚 wanted to find something that would benefit me or my career path,鈥 Manges said. 鈥淭he Schar School really stood out when looking at programs.鈥澛

In addition to taking three classes while fulfilling his National Guard commitments, he鈥檚 also working full-time as an intelligence analyst for the U.S. Army and聽contractor for聽the Department of Justice.聽

Now a sergeant, Manges recently signed up for another six-year stint with the National Guard.聽

鈥淚 think things聽have been going really well,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been a pretty good experience,聽and I鈥檓 enjoying it. I鈥檓 making the best I can of going to school, working full-time and fulfilling my National Guard commitment.鈥澛
