For students who are good at math聽and want a rewarding, interesting profession, statistics聽offers聽a great deal of certainty.聽聽
鈥淪tatistics is about trying to find certainty in uncertain situations,鈥 says聽Tae Song (MS Statistics, 鈥21). Song聽now works as聽a statistician for the聽Washington National Tax Office at Grant Thornton, a public accounting and consulting firm. He聽says,聽鈥淢any of our clients want us to give them answers, but that鈥檚 not really what we do as statisticians. We鈥檙e more about interpreting data and saying, 鈥楬ere鈥檚 what the data suggests, but you have to make the decision.鈥欌澛
Several years after finishing his BS in聽accounting and聽finance and working as a data analyst in a Washington, D.C. law firm, Tae Song realized that if he wanted to be a statistician, he needed more education. He looked at a variety of different schools and found the best fit at Mason.聽
鈥淚 was an international student at the time, so I wasn't聽expecting any kind of financial assistance, but聽the department鈥檚 generous offer really surprised me, and聽I was very,聽very thankful,鈥 he says. Beyond the financial support, the atmosphere of teamwork was also a big benefit.聽
As a teaching assistant in the department,聽Song聽appreciated聽the interaction with students聽and聽sharing his excitement about the field with them.聽
鈥淏efore the聽COVID lockdown,聽I really enjoyed engaging with the students helping them out,聽especially right before聽exams,鈥澛爃e says.聽鈥淭hey聽would聽kind聽of swarm that room,聽and聽we would have four or five聽TAs聽helping 20-30 students.聽I聽miss that聽environment,聽it聽was聽very聽cooperative聽with a lot of energy. It聽was聽聽rewarding聽and respectful.鈥澛
鈥淭ae was one of the best聽graduate teaching assistants聽in my nearly 10 years here at Mason,鈥 says Kenneth聽Strazzeri,聽associate聽professor in the department.聽 鈥淗e has the patience and ability to explain difficult concepts in a way that people can understand and聽use.鈥澛燬ong聽now uses this same skill聽set聽with clients at聽Grant Thornton.聽聽
Song says statistics is a practical and versatile field that he became interested in聽while聽pursuing an undergraduate聽degree聽at聽New聽York聽University聽Stern School of Business.聽As聽part of a student internship, Song and some other students worked for a local advocacy group, Scenic Hudson. One of their professors,聽who was also a consultant,聽had engaged in pro bono work for the group,聽and he asked some students to do some research.聽
鈥淚t was a great opportunity to do some good work,鈥 says Song.聽鈥淪cenic Hudson鈥檚 mission is to keep the Hudson River and its shorelines as beautiful and pristine as possible. They were concerned about railway tank cars that traveled along the riverside and potential spills. They wanted models about what would happen if there was a spill or leak. We didn鈥檛 actually build the models, but the research really opened my eyes to what is possible with statistics.鈥澛
Song believes that his degree in statistics has set him up for a great career. 鈥淲ith a degree in statistics,聽you are extremely marketable. It can be super academic if you want it to be, or super commercial. It鈥檚 used in government, finance, healthcare, economics, so many places.鈥澛犅
