The entire 亚洲AV community is invited to participate in Friday鈥檚 Climate Action Plan Town Hall聽and have a say in how the university聽moves forward聽in the fight against global聽warming.聽
罢丑别听panel discussion, which will feature Mason鈥檚聽,听听补苍诲听,听will be held聽virtually on Zoom聽starting at 1:30 p.m.聽罢丑别听hour-long聽event will mark the first of five聽opportunities in which Mason students, faculty,听staff聽and community members聽can聽make their聽voices heard.聽
Greg Janks of consulting firm Dumont Janks, which helped develop Mason鈥檚 new master plan, will host the event.聽Go聽聽to watch and聽participate online.聽
鈥淲hat we want to do is plan for climate neutrality for the university,鈥 said Farley, the director of Mason鈥檚 University Sustainability. 鈥淪o we want to see the widest variety of people and get the widest variety of perspectives.鈥澛
罢丑别听town聽hall is聽among the first steps Mason is taking聽to develop a new聽聽for the institution.聽Sklarew, a professor in the聽聽within the聽聽and Mason alum, helped develop the聽university鈥檚聽first Climate Action Plan聽in 2010,听which聽needs revision and updating.鈥
The new plan will align with advances in scientific understanding of climate change over the past decade听补苍诲听will affect the entire university, Farley said.聽鈥淚t will set forth a plan for climate neutrality that is both ambitious and achievable.鈥澛
罢丑别听new Climate Action Plan will be developed in two phases.鈥疨hase 1聽will develop the聽university鈥檚聽broad strategy for seeking carbon neutrality.聽The plan聽will probably鈥痭ot鈥痑ffect leased spaces, like Mason Korea and the Loudoun County facility, Farley said.聽
Mason聽President聽Gregory聽Washington has聽asked for the聽initial phase聽to be聽completed by April 7, 2022,听Mason's 50th anniversary, and focus on聽electricity use and the fossil fuels聽used on all Mason聽campuses.鈥疶his phase聽will also help set priorities and identify the most effective steps that the institution can take to reduce its greenhouse gas impact as quickly as feasible.鈥
Phase 2, which will begin in April 2022, will聽examine聽emissions from travel and commuting, purchasing, food, and other聽sources.
Sklarew credited Mason students for being "a driving force in advocating for and drafting聽student inputs into our university climate action plans."
鈥淲e want to聽bring聽students and faculty and the entire community聽into this,鈥 said Nichols, the executive director for Mason鈥檚聽, 鈥渟o that we can find that sweet spot across the board. We鈥檙e all working together to make this happen.鈥濃
Climate Action Plan聽development is a partnership between聽聽and the Mason Sustainability Council鈥檚聽Carbon Neutrality聽Task聽Force.聽罢丑别听task聽force, which聽includes members from all three of Mason鈥檚聽principal聽campuses, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and administrators,听meets monthly聽and acts聽as a steering committee for the work of Dumont Janks and Arup,听a global engineering consultancy聽helping with聽planning and detailed analysis.聽Mason Facilities聽has provided funding to retain the consultants.鈥
罢丑别听聽is a group of academic and operational leaders from across the聽university tasked with developing and directing sustainability strategy, planning, and action, and identifying opportunities that benefit research, curricular, and operational sustainability.聽
