Communications Guidance for Federal Compliance (VP Allvin)

Body

President鈥檚 Council Members:

I am writing to share with you the communications approach we are taking to inform the public of 亚洲AV鈥檚 initial response to applicable executive orders and the recent Department of Education 鈥淒ear Colleague鈥 memo regarding illegal discrimination at educational institutions. I will be sharing this information with communicators throughout the university later today at the quarterly All-University Brand Builders meeting that the Office of University Branding hosts, so your communicators will receive the same information. You are highly recommended to share this among the personnel in your unit who need to see this or are asking about the university鈥檚 approach. This message will be cross-posted on the Federal Compliance Updates site listed below.

Media statement:Given the dynamic nature of the announcements coming forth, our statement is intentionally generic:

亚洲AV will fully comply with any legal requirements and will await clear and specific instructions directly from the federal oversight agencies on how to comply.

As federal agencies continue to announce new听federal funding听compliance requirements听and as federal courts weigh in,听亚洲AV is carefully monitoring听potential impacts on student affordability, university safety, the integrity of instruction, and ongoing听vital听research efforts.听

Web page for university updates:Two web pages have been established to keep the campus updated on university updates regarding emerging federal mandates:

Federal Compliance Updates鈥 This site appears on the university鈥檚 central news page and contains official communications from university executives on instructions for compliance. It is intentionally sparse to contain only official announcements and not news links, analyses, and other information that could further confuse a dynamic environment. For a running list of official university communications, follow this link:/news/federal-compliance-updates

Federal Research Funding Updates鈥 This site is dedicated to research funding updates and is intended for research faculty and staff to access in depth information on research compliance by federal agency. To access this site, follow this link:

Web page content evaluation:As units review websites for content clarifications on the work they perform, we are offering a standard disclaimer to add to any page that might not make it obvious to the site visitor that we do not engage in discrimination of any form:

The programs and services offered by 亚洲AV are open to all who seek them. George Mason does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, ethnic national origin (including shared ancestry and/or ethnic characteristics), sex, disability, military status (including veteran status), sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, pregnancy status, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by law. After a thorough review of its policies and practices, the university confirms that it meets all federal mandates as articulated in federal law, as well as recent executive orders and federal agency directives.

Units must be able to verify the accuracy of this statement for all content that appears below each disclaimer. Sharnnia Artis, Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, is reaching out to deans to assist as needed.

In the course of evaluating your unit鈥檚 web content you may well find outdated web pages or even entire sites that may contain outdated language. Those sites should be unpublished entirely so they are no longer discoverable by search engine or AI bot. Their continued existence online lends the misimpression that they are current to university operations, and we are working to eliminate online content that does not accurately reflect our current state of compliance to existing laws and emerging federal mandates.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to navigate this dynamic environment.

Sincerely,

Paul G. Allvin

Vice President and Chief Brand Officer
