Biography
Gene Shuman joined the Information Sciences and Technology Department faculty in 2017 as an Assistant Professor. He primarily teaches programming, algorithms, and data structures and co-coordinates the administration of six different courses in those areas. He previously worked for the U.S. State Department for many years in a variety of IT-related roles, including software development, systems analysis and programming, project management, and operations management. During his last seven years at State, he was the Director of software development and support for consular global applications covering the areas of passports, visas, and citizen services.
He has a PhD in Computer Science from Mason and is a certified Project Management Professional. His research and professional interests include data mining, machine learning, analytics, visualization, biomechanical applications, software engineering, and project management. As a longtime Northern Virginia resident he鈥檚 witnessed the significant growth of GMU. He believes the school鈥檚 reputation has not yet caught up with the reality of its quality, but that the gap is quickly closing.
