ÑÇÖÞAV

Harvey Singer has more than twelve years experience in the technical contract and teaching environments. He obtained his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Queens College of the City University of New York in 1978. He earned his master's of arts in 1984 and his PhD in 1987, both in geophysics, from The Johns Hopkins University.

Singer has been with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) for over twelve years. He is the lead SAIC scientist for the continuing development and maintenance of the Earthquake Module of the Consequences Assessment Tool Set, CATS, a computer program developed for the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the automated assessment of damage resulting from various natural and technological disasters. He directed the near real-time modeling and damage estimation with CATS for the 1994 Northridge and 1995 Kobe earthquakes.

Singer currently participates in SAIC's Nuclear Test Personnel Review (NTPR) program, where he reconstructs the dose of ionizing radiation received by military personnel who participated in U.S. atmospheric nuclear tests. Previous research activities at SAIC have included applications of cluster analysis to statistical meteorology and the response of materials to hostile thermal environments.

Singer is presently an assistant professor of information systems and operations management in the Costello College of Business at ÑÇÖÞAV. He teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses in applied statistics, management science, and operations management. His current academic interest is in business disaster recovery and business continuity planning. Prior to joining Mason, Singer was an adjunct faculty member in the School of Continuing Studies of The Johns Hopkins University for nearly ten years.

Research Interests

• The development of methods and tools for the objectively pricing of risk and catastrophe options offered by property and casualty insurers and reinsurers.
• The assessment and description of the user community in the northern Virginia area for a new program of study and certification offered by the School of Business in Business Disaster Preparedness and Recovery.

Research and Awards

• Was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma as a Faculty Member of School of Business of ÑÇÖÞAV in May 2015. Membership based on eligibility and by invitation only.
• Received a Teaching Award for the Executive MBA Program at ÑÇÖÞAV School of Business in 2014 as voted by the EMBA cohort that graduated in May 2015.
• Received a Teaching Award for outstanding teaching as voted by the School of Business graduating students from George Mason’s School of Business in 2013. 
• Was nominated for a university-level teaching award to recognize outstanding faculty for their educational contributions to enhancing student learning from ÑÇÖÞAV’s Center for Teaching and Faculty Excellence in 2013.
