Biography

Dr. James Metcalf is a professor in the Department of Global and Community Health. Teaching represents 100% of his current assignment, but he maintains research interest in personal health, current environmental conditions (hydrilla overgrowth in the upper tidal Potomac River); and most recently, the analysis of health-related themes in classical literature. His recent (2015) analysis of necrophilia and medical euthanasia in Ondaatje's The English Patient has been viewed over 12,000 times. Metcalf has worked in the pharmaceutical industry and in secondary education. He was also previously associate professor at Federal City College (now University of the District of Columbia.)
