Biography

Dr. Kathleen Smith began teaching at George Mason in 2011. She received her masters and doctoral degrees in Music Theory from Florida State University where sheÌýwas honored withÌýa university-wide Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.ÌýShe hasÌýserved on theÌýfacultyÌýof George Washington University,ÌýNorthern Virginia Community College atÌýAlexandria, andÌýShenandoah Conservatory.Ìý

Dr. Smith’s research interests include minimalist and postminimalist composition and the analysis of popular music. She has presented her work atÌýthe national meeting of the Society for Music Theory,Ìýthe College Music Society Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference,ÌýtheÌýSecond International Conference on Minimalist Music, theÌýJohn Cage Conference, The 1980s: Popular Music and Culture Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference, and the Look and Listen Conference.

In addition to teaching,ÌýDr. SmithÌýplays trumpet and handbells at her local church where she alsoÌýco-directs a children's choir. She lives in Centreville with her husband and two daughters.
