Our聽warfighters聽have聽sacrificed聽a great deal聽to serve聽our country, and聽a Mason聽mechanical engineering senior design team聽is聽paying it forward to a veteran聽who needed聽an聽innovative engineering solution聽to聽improve聽everyday life.聽聽
Seniors聽Erwin鈥疉licic,聽Taha Imtiaz,聽Jon Licata,聽Tanner Holland,聽Nicolas Corley, and聽Soheil聽Shadian聽are working with Quality of Life Plus (QL+), a non-profit that aims to聽use innovation to聽improve the quality of life for those who have served our country.聽The team鈥檚 challenger, an Army veteran who uses a wheelchair, tasked the team with designing and building a聽one-of-a-kind聽wheelchair.聽聽
鈥淥ur challenger needs to be able to more easily go up inclines in her wheelchair while carrying groceries or other items. Right now, it is hard for her to push herself up a hill or ramp while also carrying her things,鈥 says聽Alicic, the team leader.聽聽
Upon receiving their challenge聽at the start of the fall 2020 semester, the team jumped right into devising a plan聽to see the project through from start to finish.聽They divided roles, brainstormed design concepts that tackled her specific needs, and they continue to play on each other鈥檚 strengths聽as they聽execute聽the聽project.聽聽
鈥淲e looked at who had what strengths or had more experience in areas of our project and assigned those roles聽accordingly. Each person acts as a specialist聽in their area,鈥 says聽Alicic.聽鈥淭here are a lot of things to consider with building this wheelchair, like balance, safety, and ease of use. Our challenger needs it to be able to cross different terrains too, so we needed to figure out how to complete the project efficiently.鈥澛犅
The team聽must聽utilize聽all聽the聽skills and knowledge聽they have聽acquired聽throughout their college careers, from physics and technical design聽concepts聽to project management and entrepreneurship聽best practices.聽聽
And through collaboration聽with their sponsor,聽faculty advisor聽Adjunct Professor Robert Gallo, and the challenger, the team聽produced聽a design聽and learned along the way.聽聽
鈥淲e are used to starting a problem knowing that we have all of the information we need, and that wasn鈥檛 the case here. It took us time to get all of the right information, and to even know what questions to be asking,鈥 says Imtiaz.聽
鈥淭here were meetings where we came away feeling much less confident than when we went in,鈥 says聽Alicic.聽鈥淲e had to go back to the drawing board a few times once聽new information聽came to light, there was definitely some trial and error.鈥澛
Nonetheless, once they聽figured out聽the details, the team pinned聽down聽a聽design聽that fits within their given budget聽in the fall semester. 鈥淲e decided to build an electrically motorized wheelchair with a swiveling basket in the back that she can easily store her things in without adding strain,鈥 says聽Alicic.聽聽
Now in the spring semester,聽the team is looking forward to the building and testing聽portion聽of their project, and mostly, to聽the final result.聽聽
鈥淔or聽all聽our classes,聽we put in聽hard work聽on tests and assignments, and at the end,聽the reward is the grade that you earn. But with this project, it is much more fulfilling since we are making a real impact on someone鈥檚 life, and we get to see the difference in her day-to-day,鈥 says Holland.聽聽
The team is looking forward to applying the knowledge they learned on this project to their future engineering careers. 鈥淲e had to work within our given parameters with people we hadn鈥檛 worked with before, which is聽remarkably聽similar聽to聽how we will complete projects in the workforce. Senior design is聽a great way聽to learn about teamwork and how to work with different stakeholders,鈥 says聽Alicic.聽聽
