Mason receives NSF grant for Conservation Incentives and the Socio-Spatial Dynamics of Water Sustainability

Clean water is a vital component聽of聽life, and without it, human existence as it鈥檚 known today would quickly cease.聽This is largely why water conservation is an important and ever-聽growing concern,聽particularly when it comes to natural resources, like rivers, and the allocation聽and management of聽fresh water聽resources.聽

Shima聽Mohebbi, assistant professor in the College of Engineering and Computing at 亚洲AV, together聽with researchers from the University of Oklahoma,聽Texas A&M, Clark University, Oklahoma State University, and Florida International University,聽received a nearly聽$1.6聽million聽project聽grant from the National Science Foundation聽(NSF)聽for聽Conservation Incentives and the Socio-Spatial Dynamics of Water Sustainability.聽聽

Although this project focuses on the Red River, the second-largest basin located in the southern part of the United States,聽Mohebbi聽says the solutions and lessons gained throughout are transferable to water systems around the world.聽聽

鈥淲ater resource management is a complex problem that is affected by water scarcity, the impact of climate change on water supplies, and decision-makers鈥 behavior聽(behind water conservation policies),鈥濃疢ohebbi聽says. 鈥淐apturing the complex feedback between social and environmental systems over time can raise new fundamental questions in the field of Operations Research and Systems Engineering. This in聽turn can help with further understanding the intricacies behind water resource management and incentives allocation."聽

Under this grant,聽Mohebbi聽will聽develop novel聽game theory models聽to understand how conflicts and propensities for cooperative behavior among water users 鈥斅爄ncluding farmers聽鈥斅爉ight vary over time across the river network.聽聽

The project聽will聽start in January 2022聽and will run for five years. Working alongside colleagues聽from聽fields including聽geography and聽environmental聽sustainability,聽ecology,聽and聽agricultural聽engineering,聽Mohebbi聽says the聽project鈥檚聽end聽goal is to聽demonstrate聽how聽voluntary conservation incentives鈥攍ike offering聽subsidies to water users鈥攃ould potentially聽be used聽to achieve water sustainability.聽聽聽

"Along with my student researchers, we will work closely with collaborators, use data collected on user鈥檚 belief and behavior,聽formulate the game theory models,聽and discover novel and fair solutions around water conservation incentive schemes,鈥澛燤ohebbi聽says.聽

Additionally,聽Mohebbi聽is聽working on another NSF-funded project聽for聽聽This targets聽water, transportation, and cyber infrastructures.聽聽
