De Janasz, an organizational researcher who holds a joint appointment in the School of Business and the Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution, says there is a pervasive cultural bias against women who ask for what they deserve. The negative labelling begins in childhood, with terms such as 鈥渂ossy鈥 being applied to more assertive girls.

Focused on academics as well as adjusting to and succeeding in a new country, she took advantage of Mason鈥檚 job fairs, landing a job at a major CPA firm after graduation. 聽鈥淚 got a lot of tough love at my first job and I will be forever grateful to my employer for pushing me out of my comfort zone,鈥 Jenkins says.
