Leah and Peregrine Pistone, incoming freshmen at ÑÇÖÞAV, are used to learning together. The siblings were homeschooled by their mother throughout their K-12 years. While they say they are grateful for the experience, they both are looking forward to engulfing themselves in a large university environment with diverse classmates.

The tourism and hospitality industries have been confronting increasing challenges related to both the pandemic and climate change, according to experts from ÑÇÖÞAV’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD).

Over the two past years, two ÑÇÖÞAV systems engineering senior design teams developed a tool to help two Maryland counties make complex financial decisions to reduce their CO2 emissions.

Natalia Kanos and Veronica Mata met as they searched for roommates prior to starting as freshmen at ÑÇÖÞAV. Now they are leading Student Government.

ÑÇÖÞAV President Gregory Washington and a host of Mason student, faculty and staff representatives welcomed the largest incoming class in the university’s history at two convocations Friday, Aug. 20.

As a graduate student with intersectional racial and ethnic identities, ÑÇÖÞAV doctoral student Austin A. Deray said he believes it is his responsibility to champion the voices of his communities.

Derek Horstmeyer, who specializes in corporate finance at Mason’s School of Business, has guided about 15 students with independent research projects and then helped them get recognition for their work.

Freshmen moving into the residence halls on Wednesday, Aug. 18, marks the start of the 2021-22 academic year at ÑÇÖÞAV.

Nearly 100 Mason students presented the results of their summer multidisciplinary research and creative projects on Aug. 5-6 in a virtual celebration of student scholarship.

Mason will welcome new and returning students to the Fairfax Campus during New Student Convocation on Friday, Aug. 20. This year, two classes will be acknowledged at EagleBank Arena: the incoming Class of 2021 and the returning Class of 2020, whose official on-campus welcome was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ÑÇÖÞAV is a large and diverse school with more than 39,000 students. For incoming freshmen, that can be overwhelming. Quill Camp is an extended Orientation program that helps them navigate their transition to their new home at Mason.

Calahan Young qualified for the USA Men’s Goalball team and will compete in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, which begin Aug. 25.
